tape wall/ceiling crack if installing crown molding??? Yes or no

I've installed drywall on a wall on which crown molding will hide the wall/ceiling junction. Currently there is an irregular opening between the two but no more than 1/4" at any point. If crown molding will hide this crack, is there any reason to paper/mud it? Similary, a wall corner will be hiden by built in bookcases. Again, any reason to properly finish off the corner? Thanks!

if it is on an outside wall i would, to stop drafts.

I just did the popcorn ceiling in our den as a test for DIY (had the kitchen and FR done as part of a total kitchen gut) and it was surprisingly easy, but tiring on the arms. The popcorn came down really easily, but I spent the next few evenings after work touching up holes with joint compound and sanding. It was definitely worth it in the end and even though we didn't do crown, I imagine doing crown over the popcorn might be tough or not look as good due to gaps. Maddielee's suggestion to remove the area just by the crown might be a nice compromise, but I say - go for it.

If the sheetrock meets the ceiling, you can caulk that joint with firestop caulking to achieve the results that mac mentions. It's easier and not messy. Michael

Probably a combination of(a) and (c), but shrinking is a problem with most caulks that are latex based.Dap makes a latex caulk that contains silicone and is paintable. The silicone allows it to stay somewhat flexible for contraction/expansion issues and shrinks less than latex without, but will shrink on larger gaps. Polyseamseal all purpose adhesive caulk is another decent product that remains flexible without silicone, and is paintable.Less shrinkage with polyseamseal as well.Sometimes gaps require more than one application.

Yes, we're having the cabinets made. They're framed cabinets from Kraftmaid, and come in 3 inch increments for height. I could have gone with 30, but then there's a lot of room left at the top, and I don't want a big crown. 33 inch gives me more storage space and still leaves just enough room for a 3/4 inch or 1 inch crown at the top. I want something straight as Sophie Wheeler suggested, not something that is angled. They have something called "solid stock" that is finished on 3 sides and gives you some flexibility in placement. Same for the light rail - just a straight edge mounted so it comes out slightly beyond the bottom of the cabinet.

agreed with teh above, at least seal it to stop drafts.

You might be able to caulk it. Sometimes, if you leave those open,especially on uninsullated interior walls, dirt filters down along with the draft. It's never wise to leave gaps like this.

Hmmm, it's an interior wall, first floor, but I have noted that drafts can travel far. I was going to caulk the molding once in place prior to painting to eliminate cracks but I will paper over the crack first. Thanks to all.

I've used a method for crown out of an old Fine Homebuilding article. I put up a backer cut from a 2x4 so that you don't have to be fussy about where you nail the crown when you're putting it up. Typically, I'd shoot a bead of expanding foam along the junction right before putting the backer up to make sure it's all sealed.
