What is your favorite way to make popcorn?

I put 2 cups of regular popcorn from a jar in a brown paperbag, fold the top down 3 times and place in the microwave for about 3 minutes or until the popping slows down.
After that, I add melted butter and salt or nothing at all if I doing it for me. Nothing fancy.

My favorite way...I drive to Grand Forks; takes me about 45 minutes to get to the theater.

Buy a ticket.

Go in.

Order a medium, unbuttered popcorn. (I bootleg bottled water in inside my large purse. What can I say, I come from a long line of bootleggers.)

Sit down and enjoy popcorn and movie! Of course, I do this only about three times a year so the rest of the time I use Mr. R's microwave popcorn.

Hope no one minds if I give part two of my prior post from May 16. The one where I bought Optimara Modesty. Remember she was one of 3 violets in the Lowe's that day. Well I went back to Lowe's today and those same two violets were still there. Last time I saw them was on May 16 when I bought Modesty. Oh you should have seen them. I think they may be circleing the drain. There leaves are so limp they just hang over the pot. I felt so bad for them I took them over to a decorative fountain and let the water run over the soil on both of them. At least that would help until I was done with grocery shopping. Yes,,,,,,I asked the lady to reduce them and bought them both. Poor things. But guess what I noticed when I got to the car? The white one was tagged Ontario! Could it be Optimara Ontario???? Becha it is! The other one had deep purple blooms with little white flecks on it. They are both in the intensive care unit right now. Well if they don't make it I will take them back for a refund. Thank goodness Lowe's does that. I know it was stupid and they may die anyway but,,,,well, I guess I have no more to say about it. Rosie

Cheryl Ok, When I make twice baked potatos it is not a recipe but rather just a combination of a technique and your imagination. I start with large potatoes. I prefer large Idaho bakers that are running about a pound each. If I am cooking something in the oven I put then in the oven to bake, otherwise I nuke them till they are done. I then slice each potato in half longwise, and use a tablespoon to scoop out most of the flesh, leaving the skins about 1/4" thick. Making the filling is basically just like making mashed potatoes only instead of using a hand masher I use an electric mixer and work up to high speed toward the end of the process to fluff it up good. The ingredients in the filling ultimately depend upon what entree I am serving the potatoes with. If I am planning to serve them with beef or pork I generally add milk and butter or margarine just like making mashed potatoes, but if I am serving them with baked chicken I use some of the chicken broth from the chicken. Sometimes I bake fish in milk, butter, onions and corn and I use some of the milk broth from the fish pan. Next I add shredded cheese. Usually its shredded yellow or white cheddar, but if I am making a spicy meal I use shredded Monteray Jack cheese. Most people like bacon bits in them, but I am not big on bacon however I do like to add chopped chives, finely chopped onions, minced garlic and sometimes I even add mexican salsa. (Not all those things at once mind you. I just like to make them a little different each time, It all depends on what I have at hand.) And if your feeling real decadent add some sour cream, but then if that is not on your diet, I have had success with using some yogurt. Now mix all that on high speed to work a lot of air in and fluff it up real good, then spoon that mixture into the potato skins and heap it up real high. If the oven is still hot you can put those on a cookie sheet and set them under the broiler for a few minutes to get a light brown on the tops, but if you nuked the potatoes and your not using the oven, here is a tip I learned from a chef in a big convention center. Use a Propane torch to put a light brown on them, nobody but you will ever know. (The torch also works perfect to put those nice little brown peaks on your maraingue pies). When I use the nuke and the torch I can make them start to finish in about 20minutes. Now generally when I make them I make about 6 or 8 even though its just Jan & I. We each have one with the meal the the rest are wrapped and popped in the freezer where they can be quickly pulled out and nuked later.

Here is a good and easy recipe for country style ribs. Sauce -- 1 cup catsup, 3/4 cups water, 1/2 cup vinegar (I use cider), 2 tablespoons sugar,2 tablespoons chili powder, 1 tablespoon liquid smoke, 1/2 teaspoon each of salt, black pepper and red pepper, 2 bay leaves, 1 clove (or 2) of minced garlic. Mix together and heat to a slow boil to blend flavors and melt sugar. Take your ribs and rub them with liquid smoke.(in addition to the LS in the sauce). Wrap in cheesecloth and refrigerate for several hours or overnight. Place the ribs in a pan,cover with sauce and bake covered basting frequently in a 350 oven for several hours until tender. For smaller ribs like baby backs I like them Santa Maria style like Carol in Ca. I also like them baked with sauerkraut sweetened with a little brown sugar.

Robin, I've gotten a number of roses from dear Claire, above, and the Cascadia group. Claire loves old roses and the group has some very nice people. That's one good way to accumulate roses, join one of the local groups and buy from their low cost sales or get cuttings and propagate. Another really helpful group is the one that meets in Tacoma; really lovely people there and a good source of information. They maintain the very large rose garden at the Point Defiance which has an abundance of both modern and a nice old garden rose section. There is a mix of people there and they do a nice ARS rose show if you like that kind of thing and an auction of roses in late fall. I think it helps to know what kind of roses you want to grow. Once blooming old garden roses like the albas and the gallicas? Repeat blooming old roses like the portlands or hybrid perpetuals? Spinossisimas have a charm of their own that's like nothing else. Love fragrance? Any particular color? There are some really beautiful more modern roses - I love the ease and charm of some of the recent Kordes releases. Most of the roses people here love are not going to be found at a local box store, you have to look for them. The search and the learning rival the sheer fun of growing them and dealing with all the problems that attend any kind of dedicated gardening. It helps to look at rose books also and learn the different classes of roses ... or ask here and people will share their knowledge. Rosarian-types love to share what they learned from a book! Over the years I've spent hundreds of dollars and along the way learned how to propagate and accumulated a lot of books. Roses are a hobby like tatting or crewel work or collecting porcelain. Favorite vendors of mine for on line sales are Burlington roses in California and Chamblee roses in east Texas for modern Kordes and some Austins. I've also ordered from Heirloom and Rogue Valley and am very satisfied. High Country is great! Rogue Valley also gives away mystery roses and other roses with a certain order amount. Gean

Haha Wildchild - urinecorn. I don't believe in it myself.

I like to pop mine with air, then pour over a nougat made of melted marshmallows and butter with peanut butter stirred in.

Makes what we call around here "Depression Popcorn." Eat when depressed - makes you feel great LOL

usually just microwave orville redenbachers....but think i'm going to try ellie's way. bought some bulk corn to pop to string for the birds so i'll make some extra for me. smother with butter and salt - how bad can it be? lol ;)

I like my hot air popper too.

I may have to try Ellie's brown bag way though. Are you sure you meant 2 cups... that seems like a lot of uncooked popcorn.

I use Orville Redenbacher's corn in a hot air popper. Then to make it really good, I candy it!!! Otherwise, I use lots of butter and popcorn salt. It never lasts either way.

I have to agree with Carla35..two cups seems like an awful lot of popcorn....

When I was a kid I operated a commercial theater type popcorn popper in a concession stand and it only took 1 cup per batch to fill that popper.

I now use a 24" diameter chinese wok with a dome lid, and if I put a cup of popcorn kernals in that, it will lift the lid.

Typically a home use popcorn popper uses 1/4cup per batch and according to the information they gave on the History Channel on TV a typical microwave popcorn bag has between 1/8 & 1/4 cup of raw popcorn in it.

The old fashioned way....in a kettle on the stove top. A local farmer grows it and it is the best popcorn ever! I could live on popcorn! :)

Ellie here, I just read online they suggest 1/2 cup for 3 minutes. So, they agree with you. I just measured mine instead of eyeballing and it is about a cup per lunch bag. It fills the brown bag all the way up.

I pull it when the popping slows down and have some kernels left but it's not burnt. The more air between the kernels the better it is so less is more for sure.

Oh, my paper bag size is 6/1/8 x 4 x 12 3/8 inches. It sez that it is extra large, super strong and easy to open. LOL

I love melted marshmallows over mine..I call it 'sticky popcorn'! Have never tried it with peanut butter as amyfiddler suggested. May have to do that next time the popcorn bug hits!

Hand cranked Whirley Pop popcorn maker. The best ever!!!! Just as fast as microwave and so much better!!! The kids friends come over for popcorn. We use 2/3 cup.

We use the Presto popcorn popper with Orville Redenbachers natural corn, oil and a few spritz's of butter spray and salt. We've eliminated all chips in the house because we love this popcorn. I can also do my own version of kettle corn if I have a sweet tooth. Add a tablespoon of sugar to the oil and corn kernels and watch it closely.

I prefer to cook it on my gas stove in a saucepan, very low flame. A couple of tablespoons of oil, usually grapeseed, and I start with three kernels. Lid on, and after I hear the three pops I add enough kernels to cover most of the bottom of the pan. Lid back on, shake it back and forth until the popping stops. I spritz with I Can't Believe It's Not Butter spray, then add a pinch of extra salt and a tiny bit of smoked paprika.

White Cat is the latest brand of popcorn I've tried, and I like it best so far.

We now use a microwave popper (basically a bowl with a lid, but goggle them) and tiny bit of oil, or even no oil.
I love stovetop popcorn, but it takes more oil. We use organic popcorn in bulk that is the freshest, most flavorful popcorn I've tasted.

Yes, it holds more than 2 cups. My guessing isn't worth a darn but a cup of popped corn is so very little. I would say 6 cups. Enough to be too much for one person.

this time of the year? the big tins of 3 flavor pc...dh makes his own on friday night...a wee bit heavy on the oil so i can't eat it... i do better on the microwave and love kettle corn...
