Both BookBub and BookGorilla have a few free books. Others are low cost. I can download eBooks for free from our public library. I'm sure ravencajun will chime in on this.

I subscribe to the daily lists from both mentioned bookbub and bookgorilla but my favorite is pixelofink. Just subscribe for free and every day you will get lists of free and reduced price books. I have hundreds of great books I got free.

If you get them from the library be sure that you are getting the Kindle format.
Also if you know someone who has a Kindle you can ask to borrow books they can be leant for 14 days.

My favorite source is my library. They have an amazing collection including lots of best sellers and new releases. You just need a library card and a couple of clicks later the book will be on your Kindle for you to read.

I agree with all of the above!

My 1 piece of advice is to say you will be able to get TONS of free books, so be selective! I grabbed up any and all the free ebooks I could find when I first got my kindle. If the description and/or the ratings (Amazon) don't appeal to you, pass on the freebie!

I agree that it's important to not only read the description of any free book you're considering, but the reviews of it--so you won't waste your time on the less good ones.

Amazon e-authors have the option of offering several free days for their books in each 3 month period. Especially those who have a series going do that, to introduce people to their 'line'. So you really have to keep on top of things. I've had my kindle for 2 years now (or is it 3?) and I think I've only spent about $25 on buying books for it--there really are a lot of good free ones out there.

Good points. Also check the number of pages in the description , many times it's a short or what they call a single, just a few pages long. Some are teasers for their upcoming new book.

I always read the full information about the story and check several reviews including any negatives. These days so many of the reviews are paid for or done by "friends". But if you are even slightly interested grab it because some are only discounted for a few hours. You can always delete it.
