Well, the original was a stage production in the 1950's. The movie didn't come out until around 1965.

This is closer to the original production, but done as a live TV production. But it uses a limited number of sets - just 5 or 6.

It's not really fair to compare the two formats.

Oh, and Audra McDonald's voice is to die for!

I liked it. It's actually the first time I saw the whole thing from start to finish. They were gutsy to do it live, and I thought Carrie did a good job. She sounded like she had some serious voice training.

I loved the sets and the colors and costumes. Did anyone else hear a background noise like light static? I thought it might be my antenna reception, but the news program that followed the show doesn't have that background noise.

Live TV! We used to have many dramatic shows that were live. Back then, the actors had to be able to act, 1 take, that's all. I love it.

I loved it. They all did a great job. Carrie Underwood is a very talented lady.

I'm on the west coast so I'm still watching it. I, unfairly, do keep comparing it to the movie. I think the children are amazing. Last week there was a show on the audition process for the children and the beginnings of the rehearsals.

It's interesting that there are a couple of new songs as well.

I hear the static sound as well.

edited to add: Actually I just read that the extra songs were from the original play and were left out of the movie. Interesting.

I was at a party so recorded it. I was the only person on earth who never saw the movie. I know all the music though. Kids were great, Carrie not such a good actress but good singer, but Audra was fabulous. I used to watch her on Private Practice and didn't know she was a singer.

I saw the show on how they chose the kids. I saw the title as I scrolled for something to watch last night--TOTALLY thought it was a repeat of the casting deal. Bummer. I also recently saw a show about the real family and the true story..maybe it was the same show. ANY WHO I have seen this show on stage a few times.. I am too STUCK, the movie will never be repeated. It is too excellent!!!

We could only watch about ten minutes, sad to say. Carrie has a lovely voice but she's wooden....there's no feeling in her eyes. Her 'acting' voice and affect was flat. We watched it for a few minutes, then looked at wach other at the same time and said, "Nope"!

Everyone else was great, though. Sometimes, children can be overbearing overactors....these kids seemed to be genuine and easy to watch.

DH forgot to record it. It was half over when we turned the tv on, so we didn't watch the rest. We did catch a few minutes of it & it was nice. The costumes were very good. We only got to see the kids sing, so no opinion on the rest. Carrie has a great voice though, so I'm sure she did a good job with that.

I absolutely loved it.

One thing a good many people either didn't realize or forgot, is this is the original stage production which starred Mary Martin. I've read a number of reviews that complained about this song or that song being left out - they weren't left out, they were substitutes in the movie.

Carrie Underwood has a lovely voice and she may have had some problems here and there, but that's part of a live production. I got very irritated at a couple of reviewers who compared her to Julie Andrews movie version. Duh, hello, as I said, this is the original version as written for the stage and all its limitations. I thought they did a very good job with limited sets.

I was fortunate to have done this production in my community theater days playing the part of Herr Zeller. Live TV or live theater you are going to have problems - it's just the nature of the beast. As I came down the aisle one night to take my seat for the festival scene, someone had decided to move up front to the empty reserved seat. So what to do? I gave steely glance at the offender and stood for the rest of the scene until I had to make my exit at the back of the house.

I too remember those days of live TV productions and some of the flubs and mishaps.

No Lily, you weren't you only person who never saw the original movie. I didn't. I'm not a musical fan. I thought Carrie Underwood did fine. Captain Von Trapp was the weak one for me. I too heard the static noise, it was distracting. Overall I'm glad I watched it.

Audra McDonald fans: PBS has been known to show her in concert as their New Years Eve special. She does a wonderful job.

Glad to know I wasn't the only one who heard static, but I wonder what that was all about.

I couldn't bear to watch it so I didn't. I like Carrie Underwood, but she is like a lot of other singers/actors. They become famous and and then they are featured in everything...too much face time. We saw about five minutes of the show last week. Carrie can sing, but she just wasn't right for the part. They really needed an unknown who could shine.

We didn't hear any static and we had the volume up and the surround sound on.

The sets were perfect and I loved hearing the songs that were omitted in the movie. I think the cast did a great job and I didn't notice any major errors. There was one scene where the Captain and one of the German officers may have stepped on each others lines but it wasn't glaring. And twice a glimpse of movement behind the set caught my eye.

Both the leads were a little wooden but the Mother Abbess, the Baroness and Max were excellent - but then again they're veterans of musical theater and have the ability to sing and act at the same time. Unfortunately neither Carrie nor Stephen Moyer had that talent. Carrie has a good voice but she seemed to be belting most of the time as if she had to project to the back of a full theater. It made me long for Kelli O'Hara to play Maria.

I also wondered about Maria's costumes. I thought her hand-me-down dresses from the postulants were becoming and in the party scene would have preferred to see her wear either of those rather than the milkmaid costume, especially since the children were wearing beautiful outfits. Even the housekeeper had a more modern dress.

I think it's wonderful that they staged a live production and I'd love to see live plays aired on TV again.

I instantly made the comparison to Julie Andrew's voice and was of course disappointed, but I think Carrie Underwood did a good job. And it seemed to go off really well.

I loved it. No static that I could hear. I absolutely love the Julie Andrews version and it was interesting to compare the two. It would be pretty impossible to improve on Julie Andrews but I think she did a great job for not being an actress and doing a live show. Giving Carrie Underwood a standing ovation.

I watched the first 2 hours and then had to go to bed. I thought that Carrie did an okay job but I didn't care for the man who portrayed captain Von Trapp. I felt he was weak. I kept waiting for Julie Andrews to appear.

I saw the flubbed lines with the men talking over each other, but it was recovered nicely. The Vontrapp family wasn't thrilled with Carrie getting the lead. They would have preferred Anne Hathaway. All in all the live performance went pretty flawlessly from my eyes.

I was impressed! Audra is always so impressive.

I did hear that background static all the way through.

I had book club last night and missed it. I wonder if there is a plan to rerun it this season. I like Carrie Underwood.

If you missed it and have On Demand you may be able to see it. I checked On Demand from our cable company and The Sound of Music is there!

Since I caught only the last hour, I'll probably go back and watch the beginning. After reading some of the other posts, I'd like to hear Audra McDonald sing.

I especially enjoyed the Lonely Goatherd number that Carrie and the children sang on (and under) the bed. The kids were charming, the choreography was seamless, and Carrie gets a gold star for yodeling!

Now if only I could get the song out of my head....

What are my chances of seeing it again with direct tv? We forgot to record it.

I'm old enough to remember Mary Martin's version and all productions after that. I'm a huge Sound of Music fan. Carrie Underwood's version is something I'll watch again. The captain didn't compare well to Theodore Bikel or Christopher Plummer though.
