Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Also old-fashioned TV dinners in the aluminum plates. I used to love Swanson fried chicken dinner. My Mom used to save the aluminum plates and use them over, with her own home-cooked food.

first thing that comes to mind , roasted sweet potatoes, and roasted peanuts in the warming bin in the old wood stove when I got home from school everyday. We were farmers and grew everything we ate. Next thing was the chicken for Sunday lunch. It was cooked before we went to church and we always ate the "scraggy" pieces with biscuits, milk gravy for breakfast. I still love the same foods. One difference , now we buy our chicken in the grocery store, but we still grow peanuts and sweet potatoes.

Mom made the best Butterscotch pie with graham cracker crust. She also made a coleslaw with sweet gerkin pickles that I loved to put on leftover turkey for sandwiches. And we would have waffles for dinner every once in a while.

There were sooo many things that my Momma made..like the veggie soup and breadpudding she would have when we came home from school on a cold winter day.. But the only time she made cakes were for Christmas..A beautiful coconut cake, I would watch her crack the coconuts and I was in wonder of the milk that came out of the rock hard shell. She also made a delicious Jam Cake..oh, my it was the best..made with seedless blackberry jam. The frosting was a butter cream with the jam in it too..the color was just perfect. Thanks for bringing up the nice memories of our childhood.

My moms cake. Which I made tonight for the first time in over 30 years. Her macaroni dish. There's two of them. My husband hates them, but he grew up on Kraft Dinner. yuck.... I make my macaroni anyways, and he eats it. LOL I still bake her cookies quite often. A simple white cookie with chocolate chips. I know there's more. But those are on the top of my list.

Plain vanilla cake with a boiled cocoa/sugar/milk based sauce.

We called it "cake and stuff."

The sauce would turn sugary when it cooled.

I think we had potatoes every day, sometimes French fried, sometimes cottage style, occasionally mashed.

For me, it was Suet Pudding. My grandma made the very best there was. That's the first one that comes to mind.

There was fried shredded wheat biscuits, with butter, peanut butter and syrup on them. (I make these on occasion.)

My mom made the best fried potatoes...and I can't make them to save my life.

We always had Angel Food Cake with 7 minute frosting for our birthdays. I hadn't had one in probably 30 years...and my favorite aunt made one for my birthday a couple of years ago. It was delicious.

Chocolate or white sheet cake with the thick, cooked cocoa frosting that you can literally peel off the top of the cake, almost like fudge. It was always saved for last. (This I can make! And I do!)

And of course, my brother's pancakes. He made them from scratch every morning. It was his job to make us breakfast before we went to school. I can remember him cooking them in the big electric skillet. He wasn't even a teenager when he made them. I loved them. My sister? Not so much...and she still doesn't. And he had pancakes every morning of his life, up until the day he died. With of course, butter, peanut butter and syrup. On special occasions he would put a fried egg in between two pancakes.

Black berry cobbler made from scatch. We'd pick black berries in the morning and mother would make a cobbler in the afternoon and time it to be ready for serving warm at dinner that evening. A dollop of ice-cream or cream on top produced a finishing touch.

Using the same basic recipe, mother made a variety of fruit cobblers depending on what was in season. Typical fruits were strawberry, blackberry, cherry, plum, peach, and apple.

Everything!! My mother was the best cook in the world, I thought. We had a homecooked meal every noon time. I walked home from school as we all did back then,. My dad came home from work for an hour at noon. Every day we had a huge dinner and always a dessert made that morning..a pie, cake, brownies, chocolate pudding, sticky buns..Never was there not a fresh dessert. It was a wonder we all weren't obese. I did not inherit her talent. She went to cooking school when she first married. She was your typical 50's housewife with an apron..

My DMom's fried chicken was the best! And she would always bake me any kind of cake I wanted for my b'day. Usually I wanted her chocolate sheet cake or carrot cake. A not homemade confort food for me was/is banquet pot pies but not beef-yuck!

Homemade rice pudding baked in an old aluminum pan. It would get a crust on the top we called "the pad" and we would fight over who got the most "pad!" Also homemade tapioca pudding with a surprise in the bottom of the cup..Mom would put a teaspoon of jam in before pouring the pudding in the cup!

I've loved rice pudding since I was a kid, and still make it *without* the raisins!

My Nan made the best chicken and dumplings. I'm thinking of trying my hand at it. Hubby doesn't like those soggy dumplings, but that's what I want.

I loved "white porridge" and still eat Cream of Wheat.

I've gotten real good at making tea biscuits. Nothing better than those with honey or home-made jam (more memories of Nan)

My Mother and Grandma's chicken and noodles. They made the best noodles ever. Also my Grandma's "east biscuits" as she called her yeast rolls and her sugar cookies that she cut out with a number 2 1/2 empty can. Wish I had Grandma's recipes.

My Mom used to do tons of canning and jams, jellies, pickles. I remember when she got a freezer in 1959 and starting freezing berries. I can just taste her orange marmalade with strips of lemon peel.

I agree this is a great post, enjoy reading all the replies. One of you mentioned the meals always home cooked meals for each meal. We were very poor but had no clue from all the wonderful meals that were prepared on that old wood stove. We had cows, pigs, chickens, and turkeys, and grew all of our vegetables. Almost forgot, one horse for the plow.

Jannie...your mention of marmalade brought back memories. Orange marmalade with the lemon strips...on toast.

Another? Tomato Preserves. Oh my heck! On toast! To die for!
