I called the dealer and found out the charges. I also found out that it is a Transponder Sentry Key so has a chip in it that has to be programed by the dealer.

Metal Key blank: $48.28

Black FOB with buttons: $70.61

Labor to program it (1/2 HR): $58.59

The total cost for one key would be: $177.48!!!

After getting that shocking news, I tore the house apart again and fianlly got DH to help. As I was tearing up the garage, DH comes out and says, "Look what I found. Here is your key." And where did he find it? IN MY PURSE!!! (Or so he says.) I had looked there 3 times, even dumped it upside down and shook everything out. Either the gremlins (or devil) put it back or I was totally oblivious and missed it or thought it was the key to our other car. (Can you say senile!) Or - I will let you fill in the blank!

I did learn something from all this. I am going to get a new metal key ($13) and FOB ($18) from sellers on ebay for a fraction of the cost that the dealer sells them to have as a backup. I will have to get the metal one cut by a locksmith. And if you have 2 original keys, you can program it yourself without paying the dealer.

To quote one of the sellers, You do need two working sentry keys for the programming to be successful,otherwise you will need a dealer or qualified locksmith to program as well as cut this keyblank. It would be wise for any owner to always have at least three keys on hand to avoid costly repairs later."

So that is my advice to everyone out there. Before this happens to you, get a cheap spare on ebay. Just look in your owners manual and it will tell you how to program it. Save yourself hundreds of dollars by doing it before you lose it.

The old lady found it and dropped it in your purse so you would think you were crazy. She does stuff like that at my house all the time.

Good deal! I have one plant of this in my yard. It hasn't grown much, but it has flowered for me every year. I think I need to move it where it can be seen. It gets hidden between a daylily and a geranium, but I put it there because those plants provide it shade. They don't crowd it out, they just provide it some relief from the afternoon sun. Karen

Lol, that is so funny. This wasn't so much not paying attention as not understanding the law of gravity lol. My DF in his younger days was top fix-it guy around our house. My DGF decided to appoint himself as top fix-it guys helper one late fall afternoon and they were on a mission to take the swamp cooler out of the bedroom window on the second floor of our house. My DF "rigged" up a pulley system to the roof overhang above the swamp cooler to be removed and using a long rope secured the swamp cooler (otherwise known as heavy object ;0))to one end and my DGF on the ground to the other end. (You can see where this is going can't you?) My DF sat himself upon the bedroom floor, called to my DGF to be ready below and using his feet gently nudged the swamp cooler out the window. My DGF passed the swamp cooler somewhere in the middle of our two story house lol. He wasn't hurt but he did have to hang there a bit while top fix-it guy figured out how to quit laughing and get him down. Of course we kids were terribly worried about DGF after we quit rolling around on the ground and came to our senses, one or two of us still get hick-ups when we remember this event happening before our eyes ;0) lol.

OK...Luvs...got three answers on Tolefriends..... Use vinegar and water to clean the area to be painted. Undercoat with JW Undercoat and let it cure one week ( I haven't a clue what JW Undercoat is) Here is where all three differ: 1. Use "Final Coat" to seal 2. Use Krylon spray sealer very lightly 3. Don't use a sealer Also, one of the gals used colored Krylon spray paint the area she was painting. I seem to remember this in the back of my (limited) mind, seeing a scene that was painted on a light blue background that was fanned out at the edges, but it also could have been blended outward to no color. Oh, this is great! I know what it's like to look and look and then find it where it should have been all along. It's maddening, but at the same time you're just so happy to have found it that you stop blaming yourself for not finding it sooner.

I'd have a drink with you, but we went back on Phase 1 of the South Beach diet, so no alcohol for us tonight- just sparkling water with a twist. Salute!

That is a GREAT feeling, isn't it??? It doesn't even matter where it was found. Thanks for the great info regarding buying keys off ebay and programming them oneself. Not sure I follow all of it, but the kids are clamoring for the mall so I'll reread later. I had checked out the cost of an extra key when we bought our last car and was appalled. Suddenly I was able to keep track of two keys....so far.

Mine broke once...Denny took it to the dealer...they just happened to have one there that worked for my car...so they just gave it to him...

Now if I just had a car to go with my key....8^(

Mine broke the piece off that holds it on the key ring. Dealer wanted $150! DH found the same things on eBay for $14 and just swapped the insides out.

And it would not take the dealer half an hour to program it. They just have to make it sound like it's worth the money charge.

I'm so glad you found it. It's outrageous the cost of a new one. DH has had only one key now for 2 years. It just shocks me that he's able to keep up with this one for so long. *knock on wood*

I agree with kathy813. It was the old lady...she put you into a trance, so that you couldn't see what was right in front of you. If she's as powerful as the old lady who lives in my house, that trance can last for days! LOL!!

I'm glad you found your key...and saved yourself a bunch of money from not having to have one made. I made a post right here at KT a few years ago when I lost the cordless phone...it was on top of the electric meter outside...yes I remember talking on it outside...but I sure didn't remember setting it there...EGADS I'M BRAINLESS!!

I copied your info and saved it in my Documents.
I do have two, but it would be better to go ahead and have a third one, since you need two to program it.

Don't happen to remember the make of car, but Honda has a notorious design flaw with their key fob. The chip and key are together in the fob. The fob is weak enough to break from constant use of the key. When mine finally broke, the key was in the car and I was in the 7-11 parking lot at 10:00 at night and it was snowing. I was only 3 miles from home but backroads, etc, I wasn't walking. Luckily my ex still loves me - LOL. He had just gotten off the road (truck driver) from a 2000 mile trip and had to go back out at 5:00 that morning. But he came out and we taped the thing to death until I could get to the dealership. The bad part of this, the key was still in the ignition, but the car would not start without the key being connected to the chip in the key fob!! So now I have the old key fob - still taped, and 2 sets of regular keys. The heck with vanity - I'd rather have my car start!!

It's crazy what they charge you for a new key! Mine broke at the little piece that holds it onto the keychain....after I found out it costs 75.00 to replace it I now carry it in the little chapstick holder that our Jenni made for me! Fits perfectly!

I can believe where your key was found ... been there done that! I even blamed the cat and was almost ready to scoop the litter box before finding it!

Thanks everyone. Sorry to hear so many of you have been in the same predicament. I just wanted to let people know about the price differences between the dealer and the same thing online. It is highway robbery what the dealer charges and there is no good reason for them to charge so much. I ordered the spares from ebay and will have DH program them so I will never be at the mercy of the dealer.
BTW, the car was a Jeep Liberty.
