What is....Coarse white decorating sugar..?

I have a recipe that calls for it. I've never heard of it before.

It's used to sprinkle on a Snowflake Meringue Cookie before baking. Is it like the colored sugars you use on cookies? Is there a substitute?

It is plain sugar that is in large crystals in the same manner as sea salt compared to table salt.

I have some that I forget to use every year. It is ancient - lol!

I usually just use regular sugar. The coarse sugar is going to be more sparkly and bigger. It is about the size of kosher salt crystals.

The colored sugars are finer - they are like regular sugar.

I don't find it difficult as much as tedious, but I enjoy it. I use a Martha Stewart recipe for the cookies, and I make royal icing using meringue powder (safer than using raw egg whites). Just make sure you have a few hours to 'play'. Once the cookies are baked and completely cooled, go to work! (I generally bake the cookies a day or so ahead of when I'm going to ice them, so it's not as much of a time commitment for one day. Since the dough has to chill at least 3 hours before it's baked, a lot of times I'll make the dough one night, bake the cookies the next, and then ice them on a day I have a few hours.) I use piping bags though I've seen royal icing brushed on using a small paintbrush. You'll have to see what you're most comfortable with, or maybe even use a combination of techniques. I also use paste food coloring to tint the icing since it doesn't affect the texture of the icing like liquid food coloring does (especially if you're needing an intense amount of color). I have tried lots of recipes for cutout cookies and this is the best one I have found! NO FAIL SUGAR COOKIES This recipe is GREAT when using complex cookie cutters. The dough holds its' shape and won't spread during baking. Make sure you let your oven preheat for at least 1/2 hour before baking these or any other cookies. 6 cups flour 3 tsp. baking powder 2 cups butter 2 cups sugar 2 eggs 2 tsp. vanilla extract or desired flavoring (I like almond myself) 1 tsp. salt Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla. Mix well. Mix dry ingredients and add a little at a time to butter mixture. Mix until flour is completely incorporated and the dough comes together. Chill for 1 to 2 hours (or see Hint below) Roll to desired thickness and cut into desired shapes. Bake on ungreased baking sheet at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes or until just beginning to turn brown around the edges. This recipe can make up to 5-dozen 3" cookies. HINT: Rolling Out Dough Without the Mess -- Rather than wait for your cookie dough to chill, take the freshly made dough and place a glob between two sheets of parchment paper. Roll it out to the desired thickness then place the dough and paper on a cookie sheet and pop it into the refrigerator. Continue rolling out your dough between sheets of paper until you have used it all. By the time you are finished, the first batch will be completely chilled and ready to cut. Reroll leftover dough and repeat the process! An added bonus is that you are not adding any additional flour to your cookies.

My daughter's birthday is December 16....and I gave her a cookie decorating party when she was about 7 or 8. I made the dough and rolled out and cut a tray of assorted shapes for each kid before the party. Then rolled and cut some more while they were decorating the first tray. The kids loved it!! The mess was huge!!! LOL!! This is the recipe I used. Sugar cookies: 1 cup of butter 2 cups of sugar Cream together and add 2 eggs beaten with 2 T milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla ( I like a bit more) Mix with the butter mix Add 3 cups flour mixed with 1/2 tsp salt....and as much as 1/2 cup more flour until it's stiff enough to roll out Make flat patties, wrap and refrigerate for an hour or longer.... Dust board with flour and roll and cut... Bake 375 for 8 to 10 minutes....I use parchment on the cookie sheets....if you don't have parchment....lightly grease the sheets. The absence of baking powder keeps them from rising and keeps the cookies true to the shape of the cutter.....and makes them crisp

Can you please post a few most pictures of your pantry, canisters and spice organizer? How much height have you allowed for your pull outs? blu, just saw your request. I have consolidated my baking supplies in this tall cabinet. The middle cabinet with the three pullouts is 38" tall. The pullouts are easily adjustable so I have moved them a few times. Currently the clearances are 10.5", 9.25", and 14.25". On the bottom, I have a drawer and then beneath that a pullout with a hidden drawer on which I have used pan dividers to vertically organize bakeware. Hope that helps!

It's on the aisle with the colored sprinkles. The bottle I have is by Wilton and called "White sparkling sugar". Whatcha' making? I use it on peanut butter cookies.

Snowflake Meringue Cookies. I was going to make them today but Teri said they probably would not keep ...So I'm waiting until a day or so before Christmas.

I would skip it personally. It's usually $5+ for a jar and I find the texture to overpower the cookie's texture. I bought some for cookies recently and I was disappointed that the tender, delicate cookie was lost against the crunching.

It looks pretty so I guess it depends on whether you want the visual appeal or not.

You may also find it called 'sanding' sugar.

A tip--if you have a good neighborhood bakery, try taking a small container in, and ask them if you can buy a little of theirs. If you're a good customer, they probably won't charge you, but if they do? It's going to be a LOT cheaper than buying a little designer bottle of the stuff in the supermarket or specialty store.

And if you ever want coloured sanding sugar, you can just colour your white sugar with gel food colours. Much cheaper.

I put Sparkling Sugar on top of muffins. It gives them a nice crunchy top. I have mail-ordered it from Kitchen Krafts and King Arthur Flour. I haven't looked for it in stores in quite a while, but I think I will, as it is quite pricey through the mail.

In a pinch, you could use turbinado sugar (sugar in the raw). It's a slight brown color and the crystals are not quite as large as sanding sugar.
