I always buy blank cards - I hate the trite, overly sentimental crap companies print in their cards. And the funny stuff is only occasionally funny, and of course, in this case, inappropriate.

Just buy a card with a pleasing image and write inside "I'm thinking of you".

I good idea would be to Google "greeting card sentiments for people with cancer". You'll be surprised at what you'll find I bet. I usually write my own greetings/poems in my cards, but have searched out "Nature Quotes", or "Winter quotes" for cards sometimes, always adding the author's name.

I buy "Thinking of You" cards for several different circumstances. Often with blank space inside.

I like to think people want to laugh....get away from their problems.....so I like sending a card with say....a Far Side cartoon on the outside....inside I write....to "get better so they can share more laughs with me".....or some such thing....

I'm with Mary_c - I buy blank cards and write something. I disagree with Nicole, and I would not like to receive a funny card if I'd just been diagnosed with cancer - but I'll bet this varies by person, so you'd have to know the person well. I think you run more of a risk of offending someone, though. I'd be more likely to say something like, "I was so sorry to hear that you're ill. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. Please call me if there's anything I can do." (And then I'd call *them*, because no one ever takes you up on it when you say to call.)

I can buy the blank thinking of you cards, mostly at the dollar store, but I was looking for something that I could buy and mail right now at the time. All I would have needed to do was sign it, address it and drop in the mail, as we were on the road and not only did I not have time to make them, I didn't have my supplies to make them. Everything I found was totally inappropriate, so I had to wait until I got home, two weeks later. When on the road you have to shop where/when you have the chancel, at least we do. DH only shops when we have to, and then only one stop if possible.

It just really bugs me that with all the people with cancer and other major illnesses that the card companies don't have something appropriate. My mother is one who buys cards at the grocery store while dad does the grocery shopping. That is what she can manage. She has a hard time just getting the card signed and the envelope addressed. Writing something inside is more than she is up to doing. She still wants to send cards to those who need them or birthday/anniversaries. I do make some for her, but she uses them up then doesn't tell me she's out, or she doesn't have what she needs, or she forgets that I did it, and buys more. How many others are there like her? For as much as it costs to buy a card, the least they could do is have a much better selection!

When my cousin Jimmy was diagnosed with leukemia, I found the perfct card. It said "When life hands you lemons...Make Whiskey Sours." That was 20 years ago. Jimmy did not survive, but I heard he got a chuckle out of my card.
