I've seen red-shouldered hawks carrying small animals--once a rabbit and one that looked like he had a rodent of some kind. It's kind of creepy, but everyone has to hunt and eat, I guess. Oh, and one night when we lived in the woods, we heard a lot of owls making a strange "trilly" noise, followed by loud squeaky noises. They had a rabbit :-( I have a hard time watching those National Geographic shows sometimes.

Rabbits sound so pityful when another creature catches them. They do not "go gentle into that good night."

I've seen hawks eating a few rabbits here; thankfully I was far enough away I didn't have to see or hear the catching process.

During the winter we have mostly the accipiter's, Cooper's and Sharp Shins, and they eat mostly other birds. I lose one or two birds at my feeders a week. I wish they'd select only the detestible English House Sparrows and leave the native songbirds alone.

They don't listen to my lectures, though.

I wish "all" birds could be seed/insect eaters. "Mr. Hawk" as we call him has caught way toooooo many of our little birds. I understand the whole "predator/prey" thing but sure wish things could be different.

Caroline you just gave me a chuckle. I used to love watching Lily Tomlin and her one ringy-dingy skits. Thanks for the memory.
