I just finished Jodi Picoult's "The Pact", which was great . . . but I think all of her books are great! Before that, "Water for Elephants" was a surprise treat for me; I grabbed it at the library on a fluke, but ended up loving it!

I'm reading The Wednesday Letters. On their wedding day the husband promises to write his bride a letter every Wednesday. Years later when they are dead, their children find the letters and read them. They find out family secrets they never knew about.

Twilight. This is only if you have at least four days to devote to reading and reading only. Best make sure your housework, Christmas decorating, and baking are caught up first. *scrambling to get stuff done*

I enjoy all of Beverly Lewis books. She writes about the Amish, as her mothers' people were of the plain heritage. I am reading "The Longing."

I just finished "First Patient" and "Fifth Vial" by Michael Palmer (medical thrillers). Great books!

"City of Thieves" by Beniov (sp? on the author). Reads like a Russian fable.

"Gone Tomorrow" by P.F. Kluge. Especially if you are familiar with the foibles of academe. (DH quotes some unknown wit who said that the battles there are so fierce because the stakes are so small. LOL)

Any of the mysteries by Crais or Connelly.

Donna Leon's 'Venice' stories.

It's got a long, odd title but it's a great book and you even get a little historical info on the German invasion on Great Britain during WWII. The title will make perfect sense once you read it.

Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer.

I just finished We'll Met Again by Mary Higgins Clark. It was really good. She is the queen of suspense.

I would recommend "Same Kind of Different as Me" by Ron Hall and Denver Moore. It is a true story and very touching. Have the tissues ready.

I also just discovered Lee Child and I am reading all of his Jack Reacher novels. He is a great writer.

MaryannTx--isn't that a fantastic book? Have read it a couple of times. I just finished rereading the Christmas Jars--have you read that one? I'd recommend either/both of those books as being wonderful ones that both entertain and inspire.

azzalea, yes, the book is good so far, although I haven't got too far into it yet. I did read Christmas Jars last Christmas and enjoyed it.

Right now I am reading "A Christmas Passage" by David Saperstein and George Samerjam. Its a paperback I saw at Walmart and had to read. Christmas story about 8 people trying to get to Ashville, NC for Christmas eve and what happens to them. Very nice Christmas story.

I'm in the middle of "A Rip in Heaven"... true story about 2 murders in St. Louis.

I got sidetracked between planning my parent's anniversary party and Xmas chores. Hopefully I can finish it in the next couple weeks.

Judy, I am currently reading an Anita Shreve book called The Weight of Water.

I've also read Sea Glass, Fortune's Rock, and The Pilot's Wife. I always find her books tough to start but once I get into the story, I love them (though I wasn't thrilled with The Pilot's Wife.

Fortune's Rock was by far my favorite.

I second a lot of these, but my first recommendation is "Outlander" by Diana Gabaldon (and all of the subsequent sequels). I've read and re-read this book so many times that the cover falls off. Everyone I've loaned it out to keeps it. It's got elements of historical fiction, fantasy, romance, mystery, you name it. Darn good read :-)

I'll second April's recommendation. The "Outlander" series is the only time I've finished a book (actually, the end of six books) and then started right back at the beginning again.

I have to underline Lee Child and his hero, Jack Reacher, as a book you can't put down. I've read 9 books so far and mail them on to my son. It grabs you kind of like the book "Eye of the Needle" did. It's by Follett, his first name escapes me.

I think that's Ken Follett.

I also like the Lee Child books featuring Jack Reacher, who is a retired (or former) army MP who travels with just his tooth brush in his pocket and the clothes he is wearing. When he needs something new, he stops in at a supply store and buys a new shirt and pants and, I assume, underwear.

Isn't it the pits when you've finished a good, well-lottted, well-written book and the next one you pick up is a dud?

I'm finding a lot of typo's in new books. "Gone Tomorrow" mentions 'Marv' Pickford (guess the tail fell off the 'y'), a football 'touch down', and in some places the 'she' becomes a 'he' all in one sentence.
