Finally took my foot to the doctor...lol

I have heel spurs on both feet but that's not the problem.

The problem is.....when I stepped on the rock I broke the spur off....didn't smash it into pieces but just broke it off...it is embeded in the tendon.

He is going to start with giving me an anti-inflammatory med.

I can't imaging that doing much..it won't make it go away...but I'll do what he says and we'll see.

Oh my!! That sounds so painful. I hope the anti-inframmatories work. I got a shiver when I read your post. As I get older I seem to be less able to tolerate pain--even in others. Feel better soon. Sheila

I wandered around the yard today too. I'm not discouraged yet. I still think it's too early to tell. I did see some things that encouraged me. Daffodil foliage in places where it has been established for awhile is starting to come up. One area where I planted daffodils last fall is showing tips of foliage but not others yet. I can't remember if I put in early or late bulbs there. No sign of 25 Leucojum that I planted in the fall and only one crocus so far. I still have another 9 days before I could consider them actually later than other years. I did see foliage at the base of chrysanthemums and new growth on sedums, buds on lilacs, and on Honeysuckle vines. Can't tell yet about Clematis or the roses. The Viburnums all look like they should. But this is that time of year that everything looks it's worse, before new growth starts showing and there's a lot of clean up. Bottom line, I'm not worried. I will have a lot of work to do this year, but it's like that every year for one reason or another. I always have grand plans and schemes and this year is no different than any other in that regard. I decided to sow seed under lights this year. But I wasn't able to start them as early as I intended to. I just started sowing yesterday, so I'm off to a late start, but it really looks like we will have a late spring. DH suggests we may not have a spring, that it will go right from winter to summer. That will really disappoint me if that's the case, but I guess I wouldn't be surprised. I guess I think that we all have to become as flexible as possible because every year it seems the weather surprises us more and more. And it's not just us in the north, where we are getting cold and snow. I would hate to have moved south to get away from this weather only to get hit with it down there as they have in Washington D.C., Georgia, even Florida this winter. And gardeners in the plains states and in the West are still dealing with record droughts. Even in England this spring, they had record flooding. So we're all in the same boat. I think we have to adjust and find a way to use whatever weather we get for growing something in the garden that we love. I'm looking forward to buying a few annual geraniums this year for a pot, based on photos of all of your geraniums last year! I love the spring season, but, I'm trying to have something for every season so I have something to look forward to, if one season is a dud. I'm looking forward to spring vegetablesÃ¢ÂÂ¦peas and lettuces and greens, broccoli and bok choy. But if it gets hot too early, then I've got peppers, tomatoes and squash to get into the ground earlier than usual. And there's always containers of annuals. And plant shopping!

Hi. Thanks for the advice. Our weather is improving, temp. wise, and I think I will go ahead and divide the fern itself. I actually do have some 12" and 14" wire baskets that we "stuff" with our own moss. Have grown many kinds of begonias in those, but I actually would prefer the ferns. I would also like to get another Staghorn this season. The problem I have with those is that they get so big that when they have to come in for the winter, I just don't have a place to water them without making a mess. Any suggestions? My husband is the 'fern man'. He basically works with the garden ferns, but I'm slowly reintroducing him to more of the 'exotic' types. The 'deers' tongue and the dainty Maidenhair are often winter hardy here. So is the Pteris. We lost alot of them a few years back when we had a hard winter. Our hardy ferns are now sending up their beautiful fiddleheads. Is it too late to divide? They are getting huge and have broken the containers they were in a couple of years ago. I'd finally like to put them in the ground. We have a 30 year old stand of nandinas that my dad and I planted when my folks used to live here. I'd always been told that they didn't send out new plants, but they certainly have gone crazy with age. Last season we had to cut many of them down to the ground as they were blocking one another out. Can I dig some of the new babies and move them to another place? Well, I've asked enough questions! sinfonian: how much land do you have? 5 acres.. Is that valley yours, yes....The top of the hill in the picture is about 1/2 way on the lot.. This is a Google Sketch-up that I did of the property using the survey as the base.. or is that what is going to be developed? - Click on picture and I have marked what he wants to develop. The lots would have a nice ocean view but you can see the buildings on the lot that would make putting in a road difficult. Is your garden close to your house? No.. I have 3 ways to go from home in Paradise to the garden... 1)4 lane divided highway it is 40 km (25 mins). 2)By pass Highway and Local = 36 km (30 mins) 3)The very scenic and slow local road = 32 km (35 mins) And a picture of some Swiss Chard in the garden yesterday! I went out to the local organic farm today and was able to buy some Latah Tomato seeds. These are being very grown successfully here with our short season. So maybe next year I will actually be able to grow red tomatoes.. We have just had 2 beautiful days of weather after the hail last week! I had a similar problem last week with my 8-year-old toploader, and a site online said to try cleaning the lid-fastening mechanism, as many times that will fix the problem. Well, I wiped the outside of the fastener (which looked clean), and inserted the kleenex into the cavity the fastener goes into (and it came out looking clean). Then I set the washer for the second rinse cycle ... and after that everything was fine -- except my nerves! As it happens, I just put in a load of wash -- the first since the fastener-cleaning incident. Sometimes when the doctors advice just doesn't "sit well" and I've had a few "don't sit wells", I will actually tell the doc that I'm not going to be non compliant but I need him to assure me that I will not have to go on and on with misery while he "practices" on me. But then again, I've had my fair share of medical challenges and my tolerance level is shot.

Second oppion please!!! Could it break off or pieces break off and get into the blood stream and cause a clotting???

Bone spurs on your heel are not bone, but are hard calcium and mineral deposits. These don't belong there, but form anyway. Its not uncommon - a significant portion of the population is affected. These can increase or decrease in size depening on many health factors. The achillies tendon is the usual tendom affected by heel spurs. This tendon is attached on the underside of your foot somewhere aft of the ball of hte foot, goes toward the heel and fans out into a flat ribbon shape, wraps around the heel bone, and then continues up the back of you ankle region and fastens to a large muscle in the calf of your leg. A heel spur may or may not irritate this tendon, but when it does, it is painful. The spur may penetrate or injure the tendon and the recuperation time is long. Hopefully, measures can be taken to re-absorb the spur. However, a lengthy time is required for the tendon to repair.

When I had a heel spur injury to the tendon, my doctor advised against surgery and said it was best if the injury could be healed without surgery, because surgery in this area requires the same healing time and care as a broken bone and there is always the risk of infection or other complications, the same as other major surgeries. If it heals itself, the end result is as good as that of surgery.

I printed out what you posted....I want my husband to read it. I'm never sick and have a high pain tolerance. So my husband expects me to just keep going....lol

This has been a hard one for me...because this pain doesn't "walk it off" like many other pains have...

He needs to realize I'm not just being a big baby about this. "Boo hooo"...LOL

Patti, just bandage it up to give it some padding but so he "thinks" it's worse than he thought. Men do that but if it's them having the problem, call 911.
