She is so tiny, I hope that she is strong enough to survive. It will be a long road to go. Bless this family, I really like to watch their show and follow the kids as they grow up. I think for many it seems crazy to have so many kids, but for them, they provide well, and seem to have a loving stable relationship. More power to them.
I feel this may be the last of the babies for the family as Michelle is getting old enough to have other problems unrelated to her pregnancies. The doctors will no doubt tell them so. It is just too risky.

I agree that having so many kids is not for everyone, but they do seem to be happy, well adjusted kids. I know they don't know any different, but still. At least they are not on state aid, that would really tee me off.
I hope though, for her health and well being that Michelle will consider making this the last one.

They're not on state aid, but they're not supporting themselves by an earned income. And by "earned income," I mean having a full-time paying job, where you go to an office or work location and do something productive.

They "earn" their income by having a camera crew follow them around all day; and having the network pay for things; and having companies/businesses donate stuff to them.

I know they have so many kids because they believe that children are a gift from God (I have no argument with that), but I don't think they'd be having so may kids if they actually had to support the kids themselves.

They had 16 of them before they had a show. They own commercial real estate.

According to wikipedia, Billy Bob Dugger is a real estate agent and former state legislator who owns several commercial properties. So, while they may receive income from the TV show, it's not their only source of income.

I just hope this is their last one....I pray for that baby.

I sure hope that the new baby makes it. Heard today that she only weighs 1 lb. 6 oz. That's awfully little. Worry about her lung development, etc.

I don't know how physically the woman has carried and given birth to 19 babies. Whew!

My mom was born at 28 weeks gestation in 1950. She was only about a pound. She is now 59 years old and doing pretty good. I wish this little one could have my mom's pediatrician.

There was a couple in our town who had 18. There was a contest at a carnival for the largest family and they always won. I remember my senior friend (I went to school with her daughter) saying they should not give prizes to people who couldn't keep their pants on and were too dumb to know not how to make a baby every year.

I don't agree with the "need" to have so many children...but little Josie's premature birth had nothing to do with mom's over abundant uterus. LOL

I do jope and pray the baby will not only live but is OK both mentally and physically, also Michelle is ok too. My opinion on their having as many as God gives them is, God also gave humans a brain to know how to not have a baby every 9 months. I myself couldn't raise 19 kids, But my daddy was one of 13 and my mom was one of 7. I love watching the show, its one of my favorites on TV. One of the girls that worked with me had a little boy that weighted 1 lb. and he did fine after many weeks in NICU. I hope Michell is soon well enough to go home and baby Josie does great too.

It hasn't been that many years ago that the majority of families had children in the double digits. My mother and father and their parents also, had large families. I'm grateful that today the trend is in the other direction. But, I'm also grateful that we still have the choice to have as many or as few children as we can afford. Clearly the Duggers can afford the children they have and seem to be doing an excellent job of raising them. I, for one, can look around in just my small circle of acquaintences and see people with only one or two children who haven't a clue and their kids behaviour will attest to it. I also believe that if we followed them around while their show was being filmed, we would probably see how hard they "work" at it.

I, too, wish nothing but the best for Josie Brooklyn (such a CUTE name!). However, I feel the Duggers should re-think all of these gifts from God. (And I don't argue that either.) They don't raise these children...the older children raise them. I may not agree with the way they do all of this...but it doesn't stop me from watching the show. LOL Go figure.

I also agree that all children are a gift from God. However, there are so many unwanted 'gifts' spending their childhood in orphanages and foster homes because they are older. Perhaps if the Duggars still want more gifts from God, they might consider adoption.

but then it dawned on me,
no agency would place a child with a family that already has so many children that the older ones are raising the younger ones.

Many of us remember our grandparents having large famlies, but our world is a whole bunch more crowded than the world our grandparents had.

My problem with these people is not whether they're supporting themselves or having to go on tv for financial assistance. My problem with this is that she's having the children and the older ones are raising them. That's not parenting. That's just pushing them out and handing them over to an older sibling to care for. That whole buddy system is a crock. Nice idea but when there's sooo many children, how much time does she actually spend with each one of them?? Irresponsible people.

About three generations ago, when our economy was largely agricultural, chidren, once they were half-grown, were an asset, as they helped get all of that hard work done.

Now, kids are not a help, but a liability ... have you noticed how many families choose to have only a couple/few (or none)? Many modern children don't even have chores to do around the home and yard.

That said ... I don't feel that it should be the task of older children, apart from the death of their parents, to become substitute parents to their small siblings.

A few centuries ago the population of the world was a billion ... then, not too long ago, two billion.

During the past couple of centuries, maybe slightly more, that population has grown to from between 6 and 7 billion.

How do we propose to feed them all?

When folks keep covering the arable farmland with cities, factories, roads, etc. ... and many suburbanites feel that they have a right to a couple of acres of grass between their home and the road/street.

Even the dead are (long-term) taking up land that could be used to raise food (and if they're choosing cremation, many of them still take up a smaller bit of land).

Plus ... we've swept the seas, much of which earlier teemed with fish, clear of a large proportion of those fish.

How ... do ... we ... propose ... to ... feed ... the ... world ... in ... future???
