I'm not a Southern Gal but I, too, have always seen the clapper right at the bottom, in the middle. That's where the cookie cutters have them.

Are you asking if there's a difference between those baked for Christmas{{gwi:807}} and those baked for weddings? Did you specify Southern gals because there's a Southern tradition of this? I guess I'm not really sure what your question is.

Southern Wax Myrtle Full Size?

Our native plants feed the pollinators. The plants from China don't. Here in Central Texas, we have areas that are void of life because all of native plants have been displaced by plants whose heritage goes back to China... which doesn't feed any of our bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and so forth. Absolutely untrue!! Non-native plants do indeed support birds, bees, butterflies and other pollinators. It is a fallacy to think otherwise. And many do so just as effectively and attract as wide a 'clientele' as do native plants! I’m thinking of buying the Wax Crepe Myrtle shrubs not the trees. There are wax myrtles and there are crape myrtles but there is no such plant as a wax crape myrtle. Wax myrtle is botanically Morella cerifera, an evergreen shrub. Crape myrtle is Lagerstroemia indica, a deciduous shrub or small tree. One is native and one is not. Lots of BS posted on these forums. One needs to be careful about the info they are taking away as a lot of it is garbage!

growing citrus in southern new jersey?

Hi, first post on Gardenweb... TL;DR summary: You can absolutely grow outdoor in ground citrus in southern NJ, or almost any other part of the USA, even upstate MI. It just depends on how much effort you want to invest. Here's my full 2 cents: Citrus are quite content being dormant for several months of the year. They can tolerate prolonged periods (several days) at or slightly below freezing and short periods of a few hours (depending on the variety) down into the teens without much damage except for possible defoliation. The key is that the tree is healthy and fully dormant, active growing trees are much more sensitive to cold. One alternate approach to outdoor growing (as detailed by Poncirusguy) is to bring containerized citrus indoors for winter. Doing this you can either keep them growing actively (not dormant) by supplying sufficient heat and warmth. Or if you have a cool spot inside (temps in the 50's, for example) that receives filtered (not direct) sun you can overwinter them indoors in their dormant state. For outdoor growing, you also need to consider the fruit. In general the fruit will be damaged by temps below ~28F for more than a few hours. So you can either make sure to protect the trees so temps do not get that low or select varieties, such as early Satsumas, that are able to ripen their fruit before cold weather sets in. Depending on the degree of protection, you could grow pretty much any variety of citrus in ground. Alternatively, in zone 7B you should be able to grow some of the more hardy Poncirus hybrids in ground with minimal or possibly no winter protection. But, depending on your personal taste preferences, you may (or may not) like the fruit you get from the Poncirus hybrids. I know someone who has been growing Satsumas, Kumquats, Meyer Lemons, and some other Poncirus hybrids in ground in zone 5B for several years. Some of his trees are 6+ ft tall and many produce fruit. He uses extensive winter protection and supplemental winter heating. I have seen one of his Kumquats with well over 50 ripening fruit that he overwintered! Personally, I have one Satsuma in ground in my yard (zone 6B Massachusetts) and have overwintered it without using any supplemental heat. Instead I used several water barrels (taking advantage of the large heat capacity of water) to protect my tree. My tree saw a low temp of ~28F this past winter (the outside low temp was ~4F). During one stretch, the outside air temp did not get above freezing for 8-9 continuous days. Here are some pictures that might be helpful. Satsuma last Fall: Bundled up for winter (Early November). The tree is surrounded by 6-7 filled 35 gal water barrels wrapped in plastic sheeting to keep the wind out and is topped with an old full glass patio door for a roof. There are many different setups for protection that would also work... you just need to experiment a little and find what works best for your specific area. After 25" of snow in late Janurary: Uncovered this spring: ...and putting on new growth: Whether you choose outdoor (in ground), indoor active, or indoor dormant overwintering is really your personal preference. All methods will likely require some level of trial and error to determine what works best for you. Personally, I have found that maintaining my outdoor tree during the winter was much less work than my indoor trees. Once I set-up the enclosure, I just left the outdoor tree on it's own all winter. (In full disclosure, I did keep an eye on the interior air and soil temps with some remote temp probes and had an emergency heat source that was set to turn on automatically if the interior temp went below 27F) In contrast, my indoor citrus require frequent checks to see if they need water and I typically need to spray them with Horticultural oil a couple times during the winter to keep the insects (scale, white flies, mealy bugs, red citrus mites, etc...) in check. Cheers, Scott

Hey, I dropped off the face of the earth. Some brutal work hours with no days off. Sorry about that. Nightnurse- I'll try and stay on topic but that cornbread looks incredible. Looks perfect for a Sunday morning. Thank you so much for sharing. A perfect way to use up my abundance of black eyed peas:) Jim- I don't have anything really great anymore.. It's kind of embarassing and disheartening. I apologize for being a lazy bum here but are you interested in tropical aquatic plants? The things I need to go revive are things like my crypt collection that went through a melt when I neglected them and need to beef back up.. nothing spectacular.. c. balansae C. retrospiralis C. Spiralis C. lucens C. petchi C. willisii C. walkeri The worst of it is they can be a pain to identify at the best of times and right now they're melted to nothing.. being crypts I'm sure they'll come back but they're going to need some coddling. I have the usual stuff like E tennelus some vals and Sagittaria subulata, I mowed those down when I moved tanks but they grow like weeds so I'm sure, especially if I give them some plant love, that they'll be back strong soon.. anubias nana that I'm karmically obligated to share because the original piece was given to me maybe 7 years ago. I killed or preemptively gave away all the fun stuff like glosso, my toninas honestly don't know if the Didiplis diandra, Ludwigia arcuata or Heteranthera zosterfolia is kicking around in a tank somewhere or not. Like I said, it's embarassing. Not sure if that's any help or not. My digital camera's a battery sucking older one and I need to get rechargable batteries before it's much use.. which is a good excuse to buy time to get my tanks, and their plants, looking at least somewhat presentable. MicheleLee- Thank you very much! My balcony's eastern exposure. Really looking forward to going and hoping nothing interferes. My boyfriend's scheduled to go back to London in early Marchand I've already explained his flight plans can't conflict with this. He's not very impressed with it but I think he caught the determination in my voice.

Lychee Lovers - Southern California Results
Q

Here is what I wrote in another thread: I am completely obsessed with lychees and personally feel they can thrive here in SoCal. I believe that many people don't know the intricacies of growing lychees. Many people like myself go to a nursery and purchase a tree due to an impulse buy and slowly watch the tree decline and tell all their friends that Lychees are difficult. Yes, our soil pH is a little high, our water is hard, the humidity is lower than Florida and the wind can severely damage the new leaves but there are easy ways around all of this. I live in San Diego and got into tropical fruit trees only several years but my family comes from a Lychee growing district in China and when I went back to China about 10 years ago and ate some fresh lychees, I was hooked. I am currently growing Sweetheart, Kwa Luk(Famous Hanging Green), two Kaimana trees, Ohia pink and Groff. My Sweetheart is the tree I've had the longest, I think its about 3-4 years old now and I got it as a toothpick. I've had it in a container the entire time and only planted it into the ground about 2 months ago. It is now about 4 feet tall and 6 feet wide. You can do a search for Sweetheart Lychee and I have pics of my tree from a couple years ago. It is about the same size because I had it in a pot the entire time and wanted it to stay small until I owned my own house. After planting my Sweetheart into the ground, it seemed much happier and has lots of new growth buds popping out. To counter our alkaline soil, I incorporated lots of organic matter into the soil including lots of peat moss to make the soil more acidic. At first, I was watering my Lychee trees with Reverse Osmosis water but later switched to normal tap water because I got lazy and did't notice any difference in the health of my tree. I don't feel humidity is much of an issue because my trees are healthy and my friend Phase001 whom also has a Sweetheart also has a healthy large tree that has fruited without any special added humidity. Wind damage is the major factor contributing to the slow growth of my trees. The smaller the tree, the more dangerous the wind is. Think of each leaf as a solar cell that collects energy from the sun and converts it into carbohydrates it can use for growth of new leaves and branches or fruits. The smaller the tree, the fewer leaves it has. When a trees leaves gets too old, it will shed the old leaves and sprout new growth from the internodes. If the weather is extremely windy during new growth periods, the new leaves will be wrinkly, tattered, dried and may fall off. Because the tree is small, it has little stored energy for another flush. If you don't protect the next flush, the tree can die or become extremely stunted because the few older leaves it has is not efficient at photosynthesis and it just spent a lot of energy on new growth that got wind damaged and fell off. Some important considerations when planting Lychees in SoCal are to incorporate lots of organic matter into your soil, innoculate the roots and rhizosphere with Mycorrhizal fungi/beneficial bacteria, innoculate with red/earthworms, use organic fertilizers and time the use of your fertilizers so you don't push too much vegetative growth late in the season. You want the tree to essentially run out of nitrogen well before the dormant period before winter. You also want to withhold water during the winter to depress vegetative growth and stimulate flowering. If you want to see a nice looking Sweetheart Lychee tree that has fruited in San Diego, do a search for Home Grown Lychees. There, you will find pics of the extremely large, absolutely delicious Sweetheart that Phase001 grew in his backyard. We did have to hand pollinate the flowers although I'm sure the bees did a lot of pollinating too. If growing in pots, I highly recommend using Smartpots or similar type air pruning containers although you will have to keep an eye for drying out of the soil. None of my lychees have fruited as they are all small. My Sweetheart is the largest and has been in the ground for less than 1 year. I feel my Sweetheart will fruit within 2 years. Phase recently updated his Sweetheart tree and he says he's got about 150 fruit. Good luck and please keep us posted on how your Lychees do. Simon

Don't understand what being Southern has to do with it, but the ones I've seen have the clapper at the bottom, in the middle, as others have stated.

A google search shows..clappers in the center, clappers on either the right or left, mostly left..or no clappers...looks like it just depends on what cutter you have. :)
Most wedding ones I found were double bells. With clappers to the left..

Interesting that it could be a southern thing.

Kayjones, who was your question directed to? If it was to me, I'm sincerely curious. Perhaps I can learn something. What did you read that indicated otherwise?

Chisue was asked what it had to do with the South and hasn't yet responded. Is there something wrong with being curious?

Sheesh.

Here's the reason for my question:

MANY years ago DH and I attended the wedding of one of his fraternity brothers (a Yankee, like us) to a Southern gal in her hometown in South Carolina.

At a reception there were lots of home-made goodies. I was puzzled by seeing what looked to me like Christmas bells. One of the local ladies gave me a sweet Southerner-to-damn-Yankee, "Bless your heart," explaining that *these* are WEDDING BELLS. I was sure she said it had to do with the direction of the clapper. (She may have been teasing.)

I didn't mean to reignite the Civil War. LOL

Can't say that I ever heard that one. I'm thinking that a cookie becomes either a wedding bell or an Xmas bell depending upon the color of the icing, lol.

Interesting.....I've never heard that, but I'm Va. not deep south, but still, southern enough.

Whew, thank goodness, no war. :) Merry Christmas and Peace to all.

OOOoooooo She gave you the "Bless your heart" in other words that woman called you stupid...hahahaha NOW I AM NOT CALLING YOU STUPID, but where I am from in Alabama "Bless your heart" means well ain't she dumb as dirt...or your an idiot etd...If you don't believe me, here it is plain as the nose on y'alls face, Straight outta the Urban Dictionary..

Here is a link that might be useful: Bless your heart

I'm from the Deep South (Mississippi) and I've never heard anything about the bells. However, I am very familiar with Laura's explanation in the post above. LOL Peace to all!

I am familiar with the definition referred to above. I was born and raised in the South, and never in my long life have I heard anyone use the expression "Bless her heart" in that way.

Most often it is used to compliment, or praise, someone who has worked hard and tirelessly to accomplish a hard task. "She has raised those 5 children by herself after her husband was killed in that explosion. Bless her heart."

It is actually a blessing, not a way to call someone an idiot. A true southern lady would never do that.

Oh, I *know* how the phrase is used! I'm just still wondering if I was fed a story about the differences between 'Christmas Bell Cookies' and 'Wedding Bell Cookies'.

Those cookies looked exactly like Christmas bells to me: A simple round shaped top. When I picture Wedding bells, I picture a pair of bells with more angular shapes, with a sort of bow at the top.

Correction: The wedding was in NORTH Carolina, outside Raleigh.
