Bill Geist can make anything funny. I remember when he was doing a 'Martha Stewart' bit that involved his bringing the mail carrier into the kitchen to advise him on decorating choices.

I've never owned a 'Christmas sweater'. I also don't plan to own any of those pastel cotton shirts with vines and flowers or cute animals on them, worn by little old ladies -- even though I AM a little old lady! A friend's DD was helping her weed her closet recently and suggested that Mom should dump some bright-colored tops -- and replace them with pastels because "those are more flattering at your age". Oh? NO!

DH tells me he imagines a perfect ugly Christmas sweater would look like a fruitcake.

My DS had one--it was actually a woman's cardigan which he got from Goodwill to wear to an Ugly Christmas Sweater party. I didn't see him but can imagine how silly he looked. We returned it to Goodwill a month or so ago so someone else can "enjoy" it.

I don't think little old ladies necessarily look good in pastels. If they lean towards pale and have grey hair, pastels would make them look even more washed out. Just my thought.

Actually, Socks, they said on the tv piece that "thrift stores" are the gold mine for picking up your ugly Christmas sweaters, and they showed Bill & another fellow hauling out 2 shopping carts FULL of them!! LOL

AND they also had scenes from "Ugly Christmas Sweater Parties"!!!

The gals in the office used to wear them on Christmas eve each year. The last time I wore one, I bought a couple after Christmas when they were on sale and put them away for the next year. I was recovering from knee surgery that year and didn't get to wear one. Hmmm, I wonder where they are. I need to dig them out and donate to GW. I don't even remember what they looked like. By the way, that year, I'm not even sure anyone else wore them. One of the secretaries read somewhere that they were tacky and hasn't worn one since.

They had ugly Christmas Sweater day at the High School Friday...there was some good ones..LOL

All of the sweaters that I saw were found at thrift stores..LOL

My DD is having a ugly Christmas sweater party this week. I just picked her up a ugly sweater at the thrift store. It's VERY ugly (big wreath on the front with a gold Noel on the bottom)... now to see if she will actually wear it.

Hey, I like my Christmas sweater! It's a black cardigan with a velveteen color and on the upper left and lower right front sides, it has embroidered cardinals sitting on branches with red berries. Parts of the birds and the berries are red sequins and the leaves have patches of green sequins. It may be tacky, but it ain't ugly! LOL

Chisue, I had to laugh at your description of 'old lady' stuff with embroidery all over it.

I used to shop a lot at Coldwater Creek and then one day I realized it was full of all that embroidered, appliqued, flouncy, viney stuff. The older I get, the less old I want to look! I'm sticking to solid colors and cleaner lines.

I started wearing Christmas clothes in 1987...I remember the date cause it was the year my son was born and my MIL bought me this Christmasy sweatshirt and a white robe with a big candy cane down the front (yes I still have it)...I also had a pair of white hose with candy canes that I wore with a red silk dress to work (I was working in the office then)...since then I've worn Christmas sweatshirts or stuff like it...I even ordered matching sweatshirts from Lillian Vernon for my hubster, me and my little guy for our Christmas cards in 1988 and we still have those...I pack it all up in a big garbage bag and put it at the top of my attic so I can pull it out the first of December...Yeah...so call me tacky..

THEN...about 5 years ago, Glamour magazine posted about how TACKY they were...WELL if you know me...you can just imagine how p'o'd I was and now wear them more often then ever...

My son and his gf went to a tacky Christmas surprise birthday party last night...I had these antler glasses I pulled out that they wore as kids and he wouldn't go near them...I pulled a Christmas tie I bought for my hubster one year...He wouldn't go near any of it...he ran over to Belk to buy a nice red sweater and a dull green tie...someday when he's my age he'll stop worrying about what people think and be like his old mom who doesn't worry about what people think...I think today after seeing the party pictures he wishes he woulda went with Mom's ideas...

I wore my Christmas sweater to church this morning and got lots of compliments on it. I told a few folks about the Sunday Morning program I saw. According to that critic, the more jewels and beads, the uglier the sweater is. The front of my sweater is covered with jewels and beads. I wish I would have kept my Christmas vests and my old Christmas sweater but I donated them when I moved.

I'm probably turning into my MOTHER, who used to embarrass me because she dressed 'to cheer people up' -- which usually translated to bright colors, big patterns, and some wild jewelry. That was so typical of my mother: to think about *other* people. She loved people, and they loved her back. Gosh! How I wish she was here to 'embarrass' me now!
