This is one that is great in the oven! I'd make it in the oven rather than crockpot though

I always peel and slice my potatoes...Put in a baking pan

Then I cook a white sauce...Like you would cook for creamed peas...(milk flour and butter) Then I melt my shredded cheddar cheese in it until it is as cheese as I'd like it to be...Pour over the potatoes and bake...

I like for it to get a little over done around the edges..because that's my favorite part...Yummy.

I think I'll make some for Christmas.

Today, its a constant drizzle. The last few weather fronts that pass here, tend to swirl around over the Atlantic, and then swing back in for another round the next day. They predict that by Monday we may get a break. I had to put the heat back in here too, as its only in the low 40's outside. Most of my plants are in the greenhouse and luckily, I had just replaced all the broken glass last week. I need to get the tomato plants outside soon, as some are over 3 foot tall and have already toppled in their tiny pots. The 60 tomato plants suck up over a gallon of water almost every day. Today is Sushi making, actually California rolls. I just prepared (sliced thin strips), some pickled jicima (pronounced- hickima) as well as an english cucumber for the filling, along with rehydrating some wood ears with some beef broth. The fillings will also include carrot, scallion, sweet red peppers, and of course imitation crab meat. The real stuff is way too expensive. I have even used the pink colored pickled ginger as a filling in some. Just recently made a big batch of crab rangoon, and shrimp egge rolls too. My rangoon actually had some imitation crab meat in it, along with low fat creamed cheese, and some of my chives (actually a wild onion, I found out). The egg rolls were made using real shrimp, bok choy, onion, cabbage, carrot, and sweet red peppers. Both were deep fried and frozen for later use.

Potatoes!

Has anyone tried growing potatoes in hay? We tried this year and there was no tuber growth above the dirt where the seed was planted. We built a small wood box, planted the seed potatoes in 8" of soil and as the vines grew we covered with hay and added layers of wood to contain the hay. What we are assuming, based on observation, is that the hay stayed moist and the ground dried out. The stems/vines are all wet and we weren't sure if this constant moisture may prevent tubers from forming. I know that roots can rot out if they stay wet but don't know how that applies to potatoes. We watered 1ce/wk but it has also been raining a lot in boulder this summer. We planted a variety and only a few vines flowered- no tubers along those vines. Is the season over? The vines haven't died back yet but since we planted in April I'm assuming if they didn't come up-they won't. I'm also assuming that since we watered from the top, we caused too much moisture throughout the hay. Growing in hay seems like a great idea- easier than dirt, if it works. Being in zone 5, can we start again for a fall crop? Any ideas of why no tubers? We bought organic seed potatoes and sprouted them before they went in the ground. Thanks.

Cold au jus

I was taught in French class that "a" meant "in", "to", or "at" and that "avec" meant "with". I always thought that "au jus" meant "in its own juice", but then I tend to be a bit too literal. What does bother me is when people pronounce it "ah zhoo" instead of "oh zhoo". I quickly lose respect for any chef who cannot pronounce French culinary terms correctly. If they cannot pronounce it, they should call it something else! I had not thought of the "poisonous snake" vs "venomous snake" terms, but Annie is right about that! In a similar vein, it bothers me when people say "desert island" when they really mean "deserted island". The Galapogos are desert islands, and they are also deserted, as far as civilization goes, I think, and so both terms could apply. A tropical island that has lush foliage and no people is not a desert, but it could be considered deserted, if you do not count animals. I've been to several islands that could be considered deserts, but they were definitely not deserted. Lars

Need a crockpot potato recipe please

Consider that you have two options. One is to find a recipe to actually cook in a crockpot. The other option is to cook in another method, and serve it in the crockpot to keep it warm. I like the second option best, you have a lot more choices of recipes. Here's one I like a lot. Take small red potatoes (2 to 2-1/2 inches). Wash, then microwave for about 5 minutes (well, for 5 potatoes for the two of us, plus leftovers, it's 5 minutes; for more potatoes, I'd do it in batches). Cool enough to handle, cut into 1" pieces, leave skins on. Toss with EVOO, S&P, chopped parsley, whatever other herb mix you like (there is no right or wrong), and some fresh grated parmesan cheese. Place on oiled baking pan, I try to keep then all close together but only 1 layer deep. Bake at 425 for about 10 minutes to brown. Transfer to crockpot for warming/serving.
