Night Portrait of falling snow (1 pic)

If anyone has a Night Portrait scene setting on their digital camera, I encourage you to play with it. I've had good results in the house (that's how I took the picture of my stained-glass fireplace screen, for instance), and last night I tried it outdoors as snow was falling. I like this image much better than any I've tried with regular flash. I'll have to work on the focus, though.

We too have been having an extraordinarily dry summer, after an excessively wet spring. Nearly broke a record for the longest stretch without measurable precipitation (52 days) earlier last month but a short little rainstorm (.03") nixed that, so now we are heading into almost our third full month without significant measurable rainfall. Still up about 3" over normal year-to-date totals simply due to an overabundance of the wet stuff this spring. Temperatures are still very pleasant - mid 60's to 70F in the daytime although mornings a tad nippy. No frost on the horizon yet. Supposed to stay warmer and drier than "normal" for the rest of the fall.....off to a good start so far.

Tracy - just pull your canna rizomes - they will be fine. I have always waited till the first frost kill my cannas and dahlias- it's good, as they put everything to the roots. There is a french canadian song that I love....:mon pays, c'est n'pas en pays, c'est l'hiver. mon jardin, c'est n'est pas un jardin, c'est le neige..... My country is not a country, it is winter. My garden is not a garden, it is the snow. Pardon me, I have probably screwed the french up big-time. Then again, it became a separatist athem, which it too bad, as well. such a pretty song. The yellow stuff is PINE pollen Socks...it's so big that it's not supposed to bother peeps meaning it can't get up your nose...but it does...I was outside most of the day on Tuesday and felt soooo gritty when I came in...It's like working in a dust field and you know that can't be good for ya! This morning the count was 5695...it rained just enough to make a yellow mud mess...COME ON RAIN...We need some more to wash this stuff outta the air!!

Always LOVE seeing a majestic saguaro with snow covered mountains in background - classic AZ. Beautiful photos. I went out to see if I could see snow on Four Peaks this morning but couldn't tell for sure...maybe once sun is up higher in the sky. What I did notice was a frost on the ground in the area where I empty old potting soil...

Please do tell what kind of camera you use. Is it a point and shoot or DSL? Did you adjust the ISO?

Cream and Ron, for this picture I used a Panasonic Lumix FZ5(not a DSLR) without any adjustment to the ISO.

A lot of digital cameras have a Scene setting, often on the little dial. If you turn to it, you can scroll through various scenes in your viewfinder (or LCD screen). Night portrait uses flash, but in a different way than the usual flash shot. It's wonderful for photographing Christmas lights at night.

Great picture! I've not had good luck with my night setting. The pictures always come out a little blurry. I've never tried it indoors.

My camera has another night setting that I haven't have much luck with. I forget what it's called. Here's my first try at using Night Portrait. My attempts using other settings for this shot were real duds.
