Stupid commercial

OK, Ill admit it, I came down with a cold yesterday so I;m feeling crappy and cranky. I just saw a commercial that ticked me off. Why I don't know, but it was about flower delivery and they showed a woman and kid sitting on a couch gazing at a vase of roses, and they showed the boy, about 12, looking at the flowers like it was the second coming of...Tonka trucks. What kid that age would be that enthralled with flowers? That is the end of my rant. Excuse me, I have to go blow my nose.

I don't get it, haven't seen it. Was it a commercial for roses or floral delivery or Tonka Toys?

I haven't seen it, either, but I agree that it sounds dumb. I understand, I think, that you mean the kid was looking at it as though it was a great toy, when it was simply flowers that most 12 year old boys wouldn't regard as that wonderful.

I can't stand the Kay (jewelry store) commercials. So dumb and fake. The one that's supposed to be romantic, with the woman getting afraid of the thunder and turning to her man and him saying "I'm right here" is nauseating. Not only the premise but the way it's done. Hate it, and it and the other Kay commercials turn me off Kay. Yuck!

They are most certainly NOT "stupid commercial names". Salvia farinacea 'Victoria Blue' is an open market, seed produced Salvia. Because it is open market, and produced by several seed breeders (and by breeders, I don't mean distribution companies), there will be some variation from plant to plant. Salvia farinacea 'Sallyfun' series (4 colors in the series) is bred by Danziger Flower Farm in Israel, and is produced vegetatively. Cuttings are taken from mother stock plants and shipped to growers who root them. Because they are stock produced, not seed, there is little to no variation between the plants, and all were developed for very specific characteristics. So, you may pick up a plant of Victoria Blue, and a plant of Sallyfun Blue, and think they look alike, but I guarantee if you see 20 plants of each variety grown side by side, you will see differences in the Victoria Blue.

Everyone has different tastes on commercials. I haven't seen this one. I think I saw the one with a car accident or something and I have seen the one where a group of young kids are around a car, implying a "gang", and the passengers lock their doors, call for a sandwich and one of the kids comes up to the car with a rather "tough" look on his face then smiles and says something like "can I get the number?". I was surprised there wasn't an outcry of racism, and although I thought it was a rather stupid commercial I did think it was different and wasn't offended. Not having seen the commercial I can't in fairness give an opinion on it though. Personally, I'm far more offended by vomiting babies, feminine freshness commercials, "ask your doctor to give you ____ pills", "sue the ba$tards!!!" or file bankruptcy and dodge all your bills ads and the like, but to each their own and I respect individual tastes. In any case, it's good that you voiced your opinion and did it to the proper place. If enough people boycott them and complain in an effective manner, they will change advertising styles. There is a right and a wrong way to complain. On a different note, I always get annoyed with people who go in and yell at a cashier when they don't like something about a company. Do these people feel like bigshots when they do that? It bugged me to no end when people would yell at my cashiers to try to get them to change corporate policies! Contact the right people, I always say and give a break to the people trying to make a living from a legitimate job. Sometimes the right people are legislators! (As with those who were offended when they would get carded to buy something.) But that's a different topic too! FWIW, I tried a Jimmy John's sandwich a few weeks back. Picked up a Subway and a Jimmy John's and thought I'd compare them. I was definitely disappointed in the Jimmy John's. It had a tasty bun and OK contents, but they bragged about their special sauce they put on everything and how great it is but this sandwich was dry so they didn't put much if any on it. And it was only a few cents cheaper than a foot-long sandwich from Subway. Definitely won't rush back there again. I really miss Clark's Submarine Sandwich shops. They had a great sandwich!

Latest JC Penney commercial introducing the American Living Collection. Several seconds in, in what appears to be a birthday celebration, we see a shot of a young girl standing on a table just as she plants her red rubber booted foot smack dab down in the center of a cake. Everyone around her cheers and claps. Maybe I'm missing something and this really is a more common scene from American life than I'm aware of but my first thought when I saw it was "you step on a cake I baked and you will not see your next birthday!". Jk, but seriously, the commercial irks me. (I do however love the music used in the commercial - the beautiful John Prine song "Killing the Blues" sung by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss.)

I remember about 40 years ago, when I used to carry a transistor radio up to my ear 24/7 and the only stations were AM, a commercial for a feminine itch product came on. I still to this day cannot believe what I heard. Sound of door opening and a startled mother saying" "Suzie, what are you doing?" and Suzie replying something about how she couldn't stop scratching the itch! I got the most offensive picture in my mind at the age of 10ish, not knowing what they were talking about but knowing it was tasteless. Still remember that all these years later.

Haven't seen that one but the Progressive one with the old grumpy looking man asking about insurance drives me nuts! He wants insurance with no gobbledyguk and some other stupid saying,then looks at the box and says it's okey mcsmokey or something like that.Who talks that way anyway? STUPID! I turn off the sound when it comes on.Most of the commercials these days are really lame.LOL

Oh gosh Suzie I completely agree. We all hate that one. Even my son says "That commercial is so stupid. That'd never happen."

The other one is the couple ice skating on a pond and he surprises her with jewelry. He creeps me out. It's SO cheesy it makes me gag!

Suzie - I hate that Kay ad too. Doesn't the man just give you the creeps? He sounds more like a stalker than a lover.

And we just switched car insurance. And when my agent called to tell me that she had compared rates from multiple agencies I told her that Progressive would be last on my list because I can't stand FLO! Oh how annoying she is.

If I were to bu insurance based on how clever or cute I'd take Geico or stayed with Allstate - at least they're not annoying.

I don't see where anyone said that, OJ. But - I will say that if I had the commercials for anything I'm less likely to buy from them. Like Kay - even just walking by a Kay store now makes me think of those nauseating ads and I've no desire to go in.

I don't think that's what the marketing firms are looking for as a response.

suzieque, I think you need to read maire_cate's post.

Commercials *do* impact buying decisions though Joyful and always have. People honestly think they "deserve a break today" to have it your way", and gets the dirt out, makes your clothes smell like all outdoors, and think that by paying $50 a year to be able to enter a store automatically saves them money. They can charge higher unit prices and people don't even check because we're brainwashed into thinking "buying bulk saves money".

Don't underestimate the power of the media. Media makes big determinations in elections and other things. "Yikes!" is an understatement!

Few commercials impact me fortunately. I will say that ones like the Burger King commercial that is essentially saying the chicken sandwich is buy one get one, sure, I like the sandwich and I've gone there. For 2 for one I'll buy them but not at regular price. Tell me facts, prices and such and you'll have more of a chance with me than a "cute" mascot or a catchy slogan. There are some commercials that are repulsive enough that I'll not support them. I can't stand "Jarod" telling people everyone will lose 300# by packing your face with submarine sandwiches. Don't go there often to start with but won't if he's the current advertisement. I won't support St. Jude after that obnoxious commercial we've talked about in other threads. Endorsements by people like the 4-time Felon or other people I don't like won't do the product any good where my disposable dollars are concerned but that type of stuff has eased off over the years. Now they're trying for a mascot or some sort of memorable commercial. I think they're learning that OJ hurt Hertz (ironic isn't it?) in the end. (Are they even in business anymore? LOL)

I saw a new thing tonight........a commercial IN a commercial. It was during a Progressive insurance ad with Flo they inserted a commercial for the movie Tron. Geesh! their double-decking us.

I can't stand that stupid, creepy looking "King" in the burger king commercials. He's just weird!
