Winter weather is good for one thing..

My daughter and I went to watch my son play basketball tonight. It was a rough game and there were lots of injuries, including my son. Anyway, nobody brought ice packs, so people kept going out to the parking lot and getting bags of snow for their injuries. It worked pretty well, actually. I hate this winter, but at least it served a purpose tonight. Lots of cars in the ditches on the way there and back though. Why do people forget, from last year, how to drive in winter weather?

Hope your son is okay. I really hate that kids can be hurt when games get brutal. Where the heck are the referees?? At least you found a silver lining in it with the snow!

Used to have to drive in winter and it was torture--for me anyway. Never knew when you'd hit an ice spot. Made it through without ever having an accident, but now I don't have to worry about it. Moved to FL. (But as cold as it's been, I may have to face it again!!)

Well, the eye poke was pretty bad, he rolled around on the floor for a bit. He broke his toe too, though. One guy got a big cut on his head and needs stitches, another guy sprained his ankle. Three weeks ago, one guy got his nose "caved right in" and needed reconstructive surgery to fix it. The ref's don't see everything, it seems.

Where did you used to live, Patti, and what brought you to Florida?

New growth -at least for a while- will all grow at the same rate and so the new stems will all look to be in sync. And that makes the new growth look "nicer" and "better". When "dead sticks happens" due to winter, I would prefer to immediately prune all the old dead looking stems, whether they are dead or not to maintain the nice look. But I do not do that sometimes because, in the case of non-rebloomers Macs, cutting the old stems could result in zero bloomage. So I live with a weird look that is not at its best of course but, at the end of June, I have enjoyed the bloomage some and so I prune to get the old stems to get them in sync. With non-rebloomers, I could have avoided all that work but I just want the bloomage so bad that I will live with shrubs with stems growing out of sync for a few months. With the rebloomers, I prune them early on to keep the nice look since I know I will get bloomage afterwards regardless. That being said, now watch me forget it to prune at the end of June. Hee hee hee. ;o)

No Glenda - born and raised here in Beantown - I have a niece who lives in Stellenbosch - the wine country. She moved there for good this past fall - her husband has a job in the wine industry there, they live on a farm on a mountain with incredible views. Some family members and I went over there 4 years ago for their wedding, and on their safari honeymoon - it was a fabulous trip and I cannot wait to go back. It's a long flight and I would want to spend at least 2 weeks there - 3 would be better!

A lot of us have friends that live elsewhere ... but a lot of jasdip's fiends ("friends", that was supposed to be: honest!)... are worms ... that make themselves at home in her apt. She does get some useful work out of them. ole joyful

I too have trouble figuring out why people get so forgetful from season to season. Part is just common sense. SLOW DOWN! Leave a little earlier. But in our society where everyone is in a rush to get nowhere it is amazing. Then of course are the idiots with SUVs who figure they can go anywhere at any speed because they have all-wheel drive. It doesn't seem to hit home that you don't brake any faster.

While I'm on my soapbox... another quick rant. About people who won't clean the snow off their vehicles before driving so it's blowing all over as they go down the road. C'mon, take a few minutes and clean the roof too. A lot of it goes down onto the rear window and they can't see out of it so clearing it didn't do much good. (End of rant, thank you.)

Try to arrange a larger cushion between you and other vehicles/people, etc.

If you need to brake, quick pumping and releasing, light pushing, not ramming with our foot, which we have a major tendency to do.

In a skid - turn wheel in direction of the skid. Act quickly ... but be careful not to over-compensate, or you'll be sliding with the other side of the car as the leading side ... so quickly that you'll wonder how it happened!

Keep steering wheels as close as possible to precisely the direction of the skid (which encourages back wheels to stop sliding sideways, move back toward their proper location).

Us oldies--stay home unless you really need to go out and try to combine trips. Please feel free to ask for help, especially with ice on the ground with snow on top. Walk slow, take baby steps, and step flat!! Falling is not good.

Don't ever pump ABS brakes. Matter of fact, pumping regular brakes with no feel is not a good idea either.

All I know is that I've changed dramatically in the last couple years in that I DRIVE SLOWLY in bad weather. It's just really not worth crashing in order to get somewhere "on time"... and now.. I've actually accumulated the PATIENCE to do so! LOL

I just showed that I'm aging didn't I? Guess it goes along with all the frickin white hairs I've been findin! Blah!
