Veteran's Day is Monday

Remember, all federal offices, schools and banks will be closed this coming Monday (Nov. 11) in observance of Veteran's Day. Thank you to all those who have served or are now in the service - we APPRECIATE YOU!

In Canada the day is called Rememberance Day, the eleventh month at the eleventh hour is when the service takes place. The wearing of the red poppy is evident on almost everyone's outerwear as a sign of rememberance prior to this day. Every year the crowds at the service seem to get larger with families bringing the children so although the parade of older veterans might be getting smaller, the schools are doing their part in bringing the history, and reasons of war to the children. Many have relatives now in Afghanistan or other areas. So, yes, the children will be aware of this day and see the veterans as long as it lasts. One particular school had its grade twelve class pick a soldier who died in battle in WW11 and was buried in France. Their assignment was to search the biography of their soldier and on their trip to France find his grave site and tell the rest of the class about him. I expect it was a surprise to many to find that some were their age. It was poignant to see some in tears reading of their soldier. You can bet they will remember what this day stands for in years to come. Good on that teacher.

Jim, like you I also remember this day being called Armistice Day. Wonder why the name was changed. The veterans of the Vietnam Era were treated horribly when they returned. And you are right, a free donut and cup of coffee, or a free meal can't correct that. Robin, you are very correct about the families of military personnel also being deserving of our thanks. While they might not be in danger of IEDs or other physical aspects of war, they still pay a very high price for their loved one being away. Today was Daddy's birthday - November 11, 1894. He served in WWI. Our oldest served 24 years in the Army and the youngest was in the Marines for 4. We do have a Veteran's Day Parade here, but I have noticed that the turn out is getting fewer and fewer each year. That's sad. To those who have any military connection, be it a service member or family of one, whether now or in the past - Thank You.

Up north here in Canada November 11, Remembrance Day is a somber day we recognize the service of our living Vets and remember those who have died defending our freedom and our country's values. My husband remains proud of his WW2 service. He was a radioman in the Field Artillery. Slept on the ground much of the time. Carried a 60-lb radio on his back from the toe of Italy to Cassino. No wonder he now has back problems.

Some of his narrow escapes send chills down my back even now.

I fear there aren't many alive today who can truly understand the patriotism of that period.

I live with a Marine that did, saw, and lives with some horrible things from Vietnam.
I know a little of what you mean about chills. Fortunately for us we will never fully understand what they went through.

My shoulders still get cried on 40 years later...

Not all schools are closed Monday.....some are open.

There are veterans who served during war time and there are veterans who served during peace time. There are veterans who have been through both. A lot of our veterans don't look like they were in the service; in fact, many of us veteran women are overlooked. The point I'm trying to make is it's not always obvious that someone is a veteran. Don't wait until Veterans Day to thank them. Thank them daily.

dees, you are absolutely right....all service women and men play an important role in serving our country, no matter where they are stationed or their duty.

THANK YOU for your service!

I try to thank as many and as often as I can. For those that dont think about it, a special holiday is a great way to remind them.

Well Tony served in the Navy for 20 years. He didn't see much action since he was on a submarine, but towards the end he did...nothing major like combat, but the fingers were on the launch buttons...

I had two tours in Vietnam and it's something you will never forget. After all these years i still wake up in cold sweats at times.
