couple pics from a day trip and our bird....

A couple weeks ago Denny and I took a little trip about 30 miles north, in the Loess Hills (we live in the Loess Hills). In this part of the hills a little north are known Indian burial mounds. This is a picture of where one is. As you drive by this area there are several there. None have grasses growing on them and are well rounded. So they are easy to spot. When Denny was a boy they would go up there and find many arrow heads.

this pic is a bridge on that country road we were on, looking at the burial mounds.

and this pic is a little bird that has taken up residence under our porch eves...he comes there every night. It doesn't bother him that we come and go..I go out there every night (while feeding the cat...lol) and talk to him.

I can't imagine why he would come sleep where a cat lives and eats...

The burial mounds are very interesting. They have some in IL also that I'd like to drive out and see one day.

How long has the bird been there?

Birds like warm places and that may be out of wind. I have doves that perch on the window well boards, probably for the heat in the window well. They also like the floor of my deck up close to the patio door by the heat register on the inside of the house.

Yes, most of us have slugs. Public gardens and a lot of hosta growers use a product make from iron sulfate. Using often reduced the population to zero and spreading it around the larger area prevents more from coming in. There must be a similar product in your country. Thanks for looking everyone! Bananatree94, Thanks for the IDs. You were definitely right on all those bird ID's and possibly the orchid ID too (I'm not sure since I dont know much about orchids!). Apparently Disney does protect their orchids, so they might have been given extra protection, but they were at least 25 feet above the ground, so I dont see how protection would be a very easy thing to accomplish! Someone ID'ed the Jubaea x Butia as a Syaragus x Butia, so it probably is just a very Butia looking Mule palm. Either way, its nice to see some palm hybrids on the property! Lzrddr, I think you might be right about that White Elephant Palm being potted. It does look like there is enough bare room underneath it for it to fit a pot. I did here that White Elephant Palms are somewhat frost tolerant and since the palm in this pic was in deep shade, its possible that it has not seen much of a frost even after last winters low temperature of 28F. Usually Orlando winters are above freezing, but they have not been so lucky with the past 2! Im sure that the Red Sealing Wax palm has to be potted up because even with heat, I dont see how they could survive last years Brutal winter. They can barely handle temperatures in the 40s! Jim, the plants definitely were one of my favorite about Disney! I was happy to see someone else taking pictures of plants so I didn't feel too alone, but plant lovers were definitely the minority! And I could definitely see why you thought the monkey's escaped, lol, the wire definitely looks like a telephone wire! -Alex

maire, yes, that's my helicopter. Ha. We were so high in the mountains one day that we looked DOWN and saw a helicopter flying below us. That was weird. Anyway, we drove most days, but we took the train to the top of Jungfrau (where I'm doing my Maria imitation above) from Interlaken, and we took the train/cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Murren. Anything I'd do differently... not too much, I think! I'd stay a couple more days in Zurich. When we arrived at our hotel there was a huge flea market across the street. Heaven! I could have stayed there for hours, but we had only one full day so we had to scurry and do other things. Also, I wasn't thrilled with our hotel in Interlaken considering how expensive it was. It was beautiful but the staff was really indifferent -- after being at the Four Seasons, where they practically fell over themselves to take care of us, it was a real change. The only other issue I had was with the altitude at Jungfrau. We had to cut our visit shorter than planned because I was all loopy. I was okay outside but there are all these tunnels leading to the various areas, and I felt very lightheaded in those interior areas, even in the restaurant. Finally I just had to sit down and zone out. We wanted to go in the ice palace but I just couldn't function. One of my sons had a headache but the rest of the family was fine. Weird how it affects everyone differently. I don't know what, if anything, I could have done to avoid it? It probably didn't help that I had had about 3 hours of sleep the night before because of the heat and the street noise. Next time, I want to go with just DH (love my kids, but...) and stay in Murren for several days as part of our trip. Jean, we were on a 5:30 flight from Zurich to Boston. THe heat on those two days was pretty bad especially when we drove from Geneva to Interlaken with a stop in Bern. We were there at midday and we were just melting, walking around, but we were determined to see some of the city and the Bear Park. A couple more pics -- DS at Trummelbach Falls in Lauterbrunnen, and DD and me in Murren.

We are in Drenthe now for 4 days. This is a very forested area and then open veld lands. There are boards placed in different areas showing the flora and fauna that lives there. I took pics of two small lakes..one has a beach and lots of people go there to swim, the other was just a beautiful natural lake. Drenthe is known for the hundebed here. These are boulders that were pushed here by the Ice Age upheaval. The people of that time were able to stack them and make burial grounds with these huge boulders. I don't have a good pick of any as there were too many people around this AM...sigh...kids climbing on them which I personally do not like...also adults. I remember when we saw them 25 yrs ago it was frowned upon to climb on them as it was disrespectful...times change I guess. They are scattered everywhere in this country and others of Europe. Our B and B is a 100 yr old thatch roofed farmhouse in an apple orchard. It is amazing. The redo inside is incredible but we are in our own little apt. so I have no pics of her home. She has an Ikea kitchen too ! Every single home we have been to has had one. They love Ikea here. All bed linens and towels even the napkins come from there. Here are some pics of the B and B and from our bike ride this AM. We went 35 km to Borger and back here to Anderen. Oh also in one small village there was a man having part of his roof re-thatched. What a lost art and amazing work. I took some photos. The part you see that is done toward the right of the picture took 2 days...he said it would be a week to get the whole rear done. You see more thatched roofs here in Drenthe than you do anywhere else in Holland. It is VERY expensive to have it done . You can see in the next pics what new thatch and old look like. It fairly glows in the sun. I just love it. our garden seating area...we have several ! breakfast and dinner are here under the walnut tree another lovely breakfast..love the egg cozy! garden horse farm next door gardens views one of the many apple trees..they don't pick or use them anymore...both folks have had this B and B for 25 yrs and quite elderly now. there house...note the low huge windows..they are near the ground but are perfect for looking out from inside...a way of keeping the style of the house intact and yet making soaring ceilings inside..wish I could show you pics..I will perhaps ask if I can take some . another garden " room" ...all the Dutch garden in small rooms..I love love love it..so intimate small beachy lake wild natural one..you can guess which I like best ! nature board at the largest hundebed in the Netherlands thatching process bunches first up on the roof where he uses wire to tie it all together note the ladders used to ascend the roof a new one nearby see how light and an old one unusual detail I spotted on the way out of town... more on other days...thanks for looking and hope you enjoy.

Just that one bird comes and it has been coming over a month now. Don't know why it doesn't have any friend to snuggle up with...I feel sorry for it. I have a bird house I've thought about putting up there but I don't know if it would get in it.

The photo of the bridge is interesting. There are not many of this style remaining. Some of these were built before 1900. There are no "I" or "H" beams in the bridge. All the main box section main beams are made of channel iron and plates hot riveted together.

Notice on the right that one of the tension rods has a turn-buckle. This is an adjustment used to account for slight misfits. The man who adjusted these turn-buckles was known as a "bridge tuner". An experienced tuner could tell by the frequency of the rod when it had the correct tension. All the rods of same length would all "ring" to the same frequency when each were adjusted to the same tension.

Likely, underneath the bridge truss is held together with tension members called I-bars. About 20 years ago, the state of Ohio began a program to take all I-bar bridges out of service because the design was prone to catastrophic failure. When one I-bar failed, the remsinder of the trusses would also fail and drop the span. It is the goal of bridge designers for a bridge to give warning before ultimate failure, for example, a span should get bent before ultimately breaking.

Pattico, what a neat surprise to find you live in the Loess Hills! My oldest sister lives in the hills near Turin, IA. She is 13 years older then I am and my two younger sisters and I spent a week or two ever summer staying with her and my brother in law. We roamed all over the hills by foot. Now, my sister says there have been couger sitings and she doesn't dare let her grandsons roam out there on their own, but she still takes them on walks in the hills. One thing I've noticed is that, in her area, there weren't a lot of trees when I was a kid (40-50 years ago) but now they are covered with red cedar. We called them the 'little mountains'. I still love to visit my sister in the hills.

that bridge reminds me of one we had to take in utah! we'd gone to one of the parks and "found" on the map a road so we wouldn't have to double back to the freeway...the further we went the smaller it got, until it hit the bridge...it was scary, but what fun to do something so unexpected...

Jel...Turin is about 8 miles east of Onawa. My uncle lived there...and his youngest son still lives there.
That is almost an hour north of us.

We are in Council Bluffs.

I don't feel like we are "up" because we are at the bottom of one of the hills...but when we get "down" to the highway we can see down over a lot of country.
We really love living out here.

Neat pics! Back in my undergrad days one of my Majors was Archeology and I did summer digs at the Pinson Mounds in Pinson, TN. Was an amazing time and quite an adventure, hot, hard work but we had such fun. We set up a tent village to live in, a water hose shower, thankfully we had port o potties LOL. Unearthed some neat pottery and tools and arrows heads etc.Love to see the Indian Mounds.
