I could not find anything on the death. He was alive when the 1940 census was taken. I did find his wife, she died in 1994. Let me know if you want me to look up any other information.

Claudia, My DH's brother and my SIL didn't care about their ancestry either. Then, a couple years ago my SIL's mother passed away & a couple months ago I got a call asking me how to get started researching her genealogy. So, you never know. People get interested for such a wide variety of reasons. Now, my BIL and his wife are headed to Wales in June to vacation & do some research on DH's family that I've asked them to dig up. BTDT, my experience with the accuracy of LDS info has been poor, at best. There's stuff on LDS's website pertaining to my family that's just not true. My grandmother's name is even wrong. There is a German-Russian Historical Society that has been working with the Russian government for over a decade now & their work is invaluable for researchers. I never would have found the Russian professor if not for the GRHS. Time will tell on the LDS project. For now, I'll wait & see how they document their information. Here's a couple pictures of 'Family Ties', the book on Mom's genealogy. I wrote well over a hundred articles for the book describing the history behind the people. A bunch of dates and places don't really tell the story of a family. I wanted to make the story come alive. I wrote the Introduction last believing it would be a slam dunk after all the research. Wrong. It took 3-4 months & ended up 31 pages. rofl Revolutionary War (I used various flags depending on the war) Just an example of an article and picture of a family crest. There are over 200 pictures... In order to make Dad's book come alive I decided to write a short novel as an introduction to the nuts & bolts of the genealogy. I used my grandfather's life as the foundation. I thought this book would be substantially shorter since I cut off research in 1767 but it's going to be close...I'm about 640 pages now & unfinished. It's hard to stop. Fortunately, binding contraints impose limits or you end up with multiple volumes. lol /tricia

AltaVista, Google, and TopoZone have been very helpful for on-line searches. The basic TopoZone was free, but now is only available by subscription. That is unfortunate because TopoZone was very good for locating land holdings and obscure, abandonded cemeteries. Towns and villages that no longer exist can be found if those had a post office in the past, or were of note in their day. Where available, TopoZone can show section numbers. With this inforamtion and the legal description of land, one can locate exactly where the land holdings of your ancestors were. This can be very helpful and it adds to the knowledge of living conditions of your ancestors. As an added bonus, TopoZone can show the topology (elevation lines) of the land and this gives one the idea of terrain hilliness or flatness. Major peaks, hills, gullies, and streams are readily identifiable which is an additional aid to finding "the old home place". The GLO (goverment land office) has records of land patents. Some of these are duplicated in state, on-line achives. A land patent is the first official record of land ownership, many of which were purchased by homesteading. Military warrants was another instrument of purchase. However, beware that a military warrant (grant) could be sold to another party - some were sold at 10 cents to the dollar, thus a particular plot of land could be recorded in the name of the warrant but was held by different person. In the majority of cases, warrants were executed by the person who earned those.

More haha, you've provoked me. Just a little. They're not flippant, they're evasive. I'm not angry at all. Here's what you WON'T find on their website "We are a start-up bioinformatics company. In return for your providing your information to us, we will provide an analysis back to you that as of today may only provide limited or perhaps even no useful information. Some of the interpretations we provide could turn out to be incorrect. As genomic understanding and investigations proceed, the information you receive from us could later become more useful. Supplying this information to you is all we owe you, you grant us a perpetual right to use your information and you understand you have no financial interest in any future income producing use we have for it." Take a look at their website, tell me what you find. I've been in town with them, it took time for the real story to get out. As with the Google example I started with at the top. I can tell you about my family member. I have frequent in-depth discussions concerning ongoing work and circumstances encountered internally and externally. Seems like it's been at least monthly (on this topic only) for years. I've visited all research facilities involved and met and spoken with colleagues. Where does all that get me? I know a fair amount for someone who knows nothing. And a lot more than someone with no exposure to the field. I have impressions and insights from perhaps a few handfuls of people. If you're a researcher, I'll immediately defer to you about research. But not about this company's conduct. If you'd had many long discussions with your Vietnam serving relative and others, the same could be said for you on that topic. Nothing more or less.

I saw a blurb for a piece on a "news" program saying they tested identical triplets and "you won't believe the results". I didn't see the segment, but I did find a write-up of what appears to be that segment. http://www.insideedition.com/investigative/21784-how-reliable-are-home-dna-ancestry-tests-investigation-uses-triplets-to-find-out The results reported differed across a set of identical triplets, but less than I would have guessed: e.g. One triplet was 6% Scandinavian the other two were 0% I would also have liked for them to have done an "across companies" test where they send the same triplets' DNA samples to three different testing companies, and compare the results across the companies. But being a "news" program, they aren't especially versed in scientific rigor. Thanks. I see that Ancestry added Mass, Death Index 1901-1980 to their Collection on 9/9/2013. I'm wondering if this addition represents a "Complete" Index, or rather something they will constantly "Update". They're not very good about stating that fact. I'd hate to assume that "my guy" didn't in fact die in Mass sometime in the 1940ties/50ties based on incomplete info. I see, for instance, that they're still updating the 1930 Census.

There are some other good web sites in addition to Ancestry.com. One of my favorites is USGenWeb. Some states, counties and towns have a lot of information, other's not so much. A lot of times there are links included to Genealogy Societies, Historical Societies and people that will do look up's for you. Once you open up the web site, you click on the state, then the county, then the town. I always look to see what info is listed on the county before I go on to the town.

I know from my own research that a lot of information from Massachusetts is not online. Keep checking, because it is being added slowly.

Dig for data anyhow you can, not just the big boy sites. A simple Google search with a name might turn up an obit they don't have.

Definitely just do a google search!... I forgot that one OldFixer... I use two search engines, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer, they both pull up different things. I have found quite a bit of information just Googling a name. I also use Google Book Search.

I Found Him!

I just a few hours ago stopped off at my neighborhood branch library & put his name & Mass. USA on the Ancestry Library program, and there was his Masonic Card Membership, showing both his 1907 & 1969 birth & death dates.

Now I have the necessary info to email the Stoughton, Mass public library to see if they have an obit for him.

Like I said, public libraries can be very helpful too.

After I had the date of death, I contacted the library in the Mass. city he lived in for many years. (They had previously looked up & scanned me a copy of the newspaper coverage of his 1930 wedding, but couldn't help me on my original request without a date of death.) However, even with the date of death, they found nothing. It was suggested I contact the Boston Public Library, which I did via email within the last few days.

I was very surprised with their efficient service, as in today's snail-mail, I received an manila envelope with copies of his obit from three different Mass. newspapers, and stating there was "no charge".

Seems he moved from his original home to another Mass. city seven years before his 1969 death according to the most detailed obit, and was remarried (I had an inkling that the 1930 marriage ended in divorce, but not positive---now with the name of a successor wife, I am).
