Perhaps it's different where you are....but anyplace I know of....when a 12 year old is "going out" with another 12 year old, it means she can't be friends with any other boys, nor he with other girls. I sure see no harm with her making sure he is aware of her existance. She is trying out her feminine wiles and he is smitten.....all that will change in the blink of an eye. I repeat...stay out of it...they are 12 for cryin out loud, you are complaining because your daughter talks to but won't "go out with" a neighbor kid? Suppose she did want to "go out" with him and wanted to spend all her time at his house? makes for a new worry doesn't it? Ignore it...it will go away! I repeat....she's 12!! I happen to have 3 12 year old grandsons. One recently "broke up" with the girl he was "going out with". He couldn't even talk in the hall to another girl without her pulling a scene and her girlfriends calling him and asking why were you talking to Carla when you are going with Dana?...and he got sick of it and broke up with her.... AND the next morning, Sunday, her mother called my son's house and wanted to know if they were aware that their son broke up with her daughter...and did they realize how heart broken she was and that she cried all night and what were they going to do about it. My son let her know in no uncertain terms that he didn't get involved in the drama of a 12 year old's love life and that his son was well within his rights to "break up" with her daughter, and please don't call again and wake me for some trivial problem that really is none of our businesses. Pay no attention....that's how she learns to be a teen age girl! Linda C

I wouldn't actually try to match features of the house. He's young and you want this bed to work in any house. I went for a darker wood, not totally black, not light, pretty non period specific and I did do a trundle. I know some day he will have friends over, and his room isn't huge, nor did I want bunks because they would block too much of his wall space (we have murals on the wall). I really like the option we went with, which I think is fairly transitional to any age or decorating style. This is a terrible picture (of both him and the bed) but the best I could find...I think it's similar to a few in the link you provided. The trundle is actually not quite in the pic, but the bedding on it is the white line on the right of the pic (as you're facing it). It slides out quite easily. We actually used it for toys for quite a while as we were getting settled in the new place, but added the trundle finally when we were finished. At 7 you probably need the trundle now :) I wanted something that would work in the theme of this room (1930's safari tent) but also work with his antiques in the future (he has a chest and this amoire next to the bed). Trying to match finishes on wood makes me crazy and to me is too matchy matchy...so I liked this one because it was dark, but not painted dark, and yet not light (I hate blonde wood myself...but that's just me). This bed is pottery barn I think.

People bred the pit to be aggressive and now people are upset that they bite. Until laws get passed against the PEOPLE who breed and misuse them nothing will change. If pits are outlawed the idiots will find another big dog to make aggressive. Some people just love the idea of having a big dangerous dog and some sick people get off on watching them fight. I have rescued and euthanized 3 dogs for aggression. Two were pit bulls, one was a German shepherd and all had been abused. Two other equally abused German shepherds are the world's sweetest dogs and my pit girls are dolls. Every dog is different and you just can't lump them together by breed, which is what BSL does. They need to be evaluated as individuals and aggressive dogs do need to be removed and even that gets into that slippery slope of taking away our rights. Izzie, no dog attacks out of the blue. People may not know what the trigger is and we can't ask the dog. I use an animal communicator, something most people scorn. But something made that collie bite the little boy. What a pity it cost so dearly in harm to a child and death for a dog. livvysmom, if you or your children has a friend with one of the breeds who has been known to be aggressive and they do not keep the dog far from the children you should not go there. They are not being responsible and your child is not safe. I KNOW my dogs will not bite. When a child comes over they are not allowed near the child with the exception of 3 of my dogs who I know adore children and then only with supervision. My son was raised with my Dobermans, German shepherds and rescue dogs without incident, but not everyone is so fortunate. By the way, the worst bites I've gotten have been from those yappy little toy dogs. My Shih tzu/Yorkie is the most aggressive dog I've ever owned. Fortunately at only 12 pounds she doesn't do much damage and the big dogs just think she's funny.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. My mother got her an American Girl doll last visit-- in fact, my niece is bringing the doll with her on this trip and she and my mom are going to the American Girl store to have lunch, and get the doll's hair done and ears pierced. What a racket! Those play silks look interesting. I'm also going to look into the craft kits. If I get her a few of those, that can give her something to do when she's here, too.

Does he read much? A book about something he likes such as cars, sports etc. Does he draw? colored pencils and maybe a game book with puzzles. Does he like to put things together? A kit for a car/plane etc.

Walgreens is where I used to shop for my nephew......remote control cars? I purchased a little porsche and a 4x4 and said he could race them and see who's faster....:0) On sale they were $5 each...

Legos. They can never have too many Lego kits. Our 9-year-old is just like his father as a boy -- the house is awash in Legos.

Our 7 year old grandson loves anything to do with pirates and sharks. He has loved dinosaurs since he was 3.

And something else -- I saw this loom thing that is used to make bracelets out of rubber bands. I guess that's more for girls maybe 8 to 12 years old??? Do kids like those?

They were banned from wearing them at my granddaughters school!

My son would've loved to have received that bracelet loom at 7 years old.

Another suggestion? Camping stuff. They love that!

Children's tool belt with tools, they love that. Every one of our grandsons have enjoyed it. The tools are safe and usually of plastic.

Too vague of a question with no clues. IMO, he's a bit too old for plastic. A real wrench would help him dismantle that bicycle.

My great nephew loves to draw, and he's very good. Cranyons, colored pencils, markers, craft paper.

Another great nephew loves board games. I think he and I played 50 games of Trouble in a 2 day period. He loved it. I loved it. I think any game that has you giving kids your time and attention they will love.

I have also given them light up things to put on the handlebars of their bikes, ugh, don't know what they are called. You slide them onto the two ends of the handbars. For example

Another year I gave my nephew a pogo ball. I see it's on sale for $12.56. It enhances their balance and is a FUN toy, not just a sitting toy....

My vote goes for Lego's too.

My great grandson recently turned 8 and I bought him Lego's...they brought an "awsome" from Marcus.
