Has anyone used those eyelash growing cosmetics?

I have to admit that I don't like the changes that aging and menopause have caused on my face and body. I used to have beautiful eyes with long dark eyelashes and nicely shaped brows. Now my brows are very light but a little pencil helps. My lashes are another matter--they are thin and short and do nothing for me. So I tried Lilash and the stuff does work. However, it caused me to have dark circles under my eyes that took me awhile to even notice. In fact, DD saw me without my glasses on and said "what's the matter with your eyes, you have really dark circles". I immediately stopped using it and now my lashes are back to really short. I guess I shouldn't care, after all I'm not trying to attract male attention anymore, lol.

I tried Latisse, made my eyelids extremely irritated. I will stick to mascara!

It is something I wouldn't try. Obviously it is something you have to keep on using or your lashes revert to their short, sparse self. I like having my vision more than lush lashes. It probably works for some, though.

Has anyone used 'Spray-N-Grow'?

Cork OK you can no longer say you havent had any responses. In going back through the archives I see that there were posts after yours and at least one before yours and this year too. I intend to go back and read some of those since I have taken the plunge. Even though the cats already out of the bag so to speak for me. In reading the directions there are some dos and donts of it one main thing is dont use the spray n grow within a few days of using any kind of organic chemicals or insectiside. Spray n Grow once it has dried on the leaves rain wont be a problem. And only make up enough of the mixture for what you will use in 4-6hrs, it may be ineffective after that period of time. I will get back on here wether my results be positive or negative.

Has anyone tried growing Apothecary's rose in FL panhandle?

For a substitute for the 'Apothecary Rose', try the 'Portland Rose' (alias 'Portlandica'; but please don't call it 'Duchess of Portland'! No one called it that until the 20th Century). Here in coastal Southern California, it doesn't re-bloom (at least, it doesn't for me), but it does bloom dependably once a year with its big blossoms of a happy bright cerise. The leaves color nicely in the Fall. It's a modest and charming rose which somehow just has a more likeable personality than many of the more ambitious roses.

Has anyone tried growing date palm indoors?
Q
Comments (17)
David, these three and other palms go into a detached, two car, loft garage from December 1 to March 1. Definitely, NOT a palm for indoors, too dangerous. I had to saw off the tap root on these as they have a tendency to find cracks in the blacktop and grow into the ground over the course of the growing season. Remember, these guys grow in very arid regions so roots have a tendency to go deep seeking out underground water/aquifers (so deep pots are preferred). Big misconception is that date species from arid regions don't like much water, NOT TRUE. And some date species come out of tropical regions with monsoonal rains. Phoenix is a nice genus of palms but most are not for the house, with the exception of the Pygmy Dates (Phoenix roebellini).

Has anyone tried growing citrus in self watering pots (SIPs)?
Q
Comments (10)
Vladimir, I haven't tried them either because like Laura I am afraid of root rot, especially during the period when the tree's roots transition to the new growing media and cultural conditions. I grew orchids semi-hydroponically for several years because I travelled a lot and I hoped it would extend the period between required waterings when I was away from home and my greenhouse. Although most of my orchids did ok, I have since gone back to bark mixes as I don't travel so often now. What I found was there is a transition period during which the plants regrow new roots that adapt to the semi-hydro conditions. The transition timing is important as the plants need to grow the new roots and will sulk and lanquish if the transition is made too far into the years growth period and there are not enough new roots to support the plant above ground parts. If there is not enough roots generated during the growth period the plant will not have a way to get enough food and energy to support the top of the plant/tree. I also found I had to keep the greenhouse much warmer as the medium cools quickly as the air moves through the medium and pot. Even though I flushed the pots often, fertilizer salts seemed to build up and burn the roots if I was not careful and the reservoir dryed out between waterings. I think my high pH water and fertilizer would cause wide fluctuations in the growing medium that was not good for the plants if I was not careful. I also got a lot of algae growth in the transparent pots I used which was not very nice to look at and also seemed to clog up the air spaces that are part of the system. But overall I mostly was able to grow and bloom plants under the method, but I was not overall satisfied with plant long term growth. I think the SIPS pots may also have many of the same disadvantages for citrus that I had with my orchid's in semi-hydro culture. It served it's purpose for my needs for a while, and I think plants can be grown in most any medium if you watch carefully and make adjustments to help your plant and trees adapt to the different growing conditions, but I didn't feel I was giving my plants optimum growing conditions. awwww you don't have to be attracting male attention to want to look good! i have a friend who uses latisse and gets fake lashes woven in. she works in the plastic surgery industry and takes full advantage of all available technologies to look her best :-) she was getting sty's for a bit but it was the lash weaves pulling on her lashes. she has had no effects from latisse. it is such a popular treatment that she & her DH have bought alot of their stock too.

i have the opposite problem too many lashes and almost too long too. i can't find mascara that works well for long because it thickens over weeks. i need super thin almost water-like so my lashes don't clump and i can't use too much because the lengths start getting mascara on my upper eyelids :-/ this is really the only good thing beauty wise i got going LOL! i SWEAR my lashes are like this solely due to my facial cleanser, Purity by Philosophy. when i stop using that cleanser my lashes do thin out. ~ liz

I think lashes are overrated. LOL, but I'm also serious. I wear eye makeup, but haven't worn mascara in years because I don't like the feel of it. My lashes have always been light brown (I'm a blonde), and aging hasn't helped them stand out. But my eyes still get complimented occasionally.

I read the articles on Latisse when it came out, and thought the risks sounded downright scary. I was surprised that Brooke Shields would take those risks.

I used Latisee for several months. My doctor told me to use just one small drop for both eyes to make it last longer.

It was very easy and quick to do and my lashes were much longer. It took a couple of months to see the difference. I also rubbed the brush over the ends of my eyebrows to make them thicker, but I didn't see any change there.

My lashes didn't get darker, though, so I still had to use mascara. So I stopped using it and they are back to what they were before. Sometimes I miss how long they used to be but they look almost as good when I wear mascara.

I would like thicker longer lashes, but when I heard one of the side effects could turn my green eyes to brown that freaked me out and was enough to change my mind!! No thank you. Maybe if my eyes were brown to start with, but that just sounds really gross and I've heard about the circles under your eyes. Help in one area and hurt in another!

I may not be perfect, but I think I'll stick with what I've got!

My lashes are long enough, but not thick. I use Chapstick on them at night -- a separate tube just for my lashes, so I'm not getting 'spit' near my eyes. If I don't use it, my lashes get brittle and short.

I still have to use mascara to darken the lashes. I wash the wand with soap and hot water and drip some Bactine over it every two weeks. Seems to stop the 'clumping'.

I use RapidLash and it really works for me. However, when I bought a tube from a local store rather than from the online source where I started, it quit working. The effect was so slow I didn't notice for quite a while. I was afraid they had changed the formula. I called them and they said they hadn't. They asked what the date was on the tube and said it was old. I bought another tube online and started using it and my lashes are getting longer again. I use it on my brows and they are thicker and the hairs in them are longer as well. In fact, I have to trim a few of them. I have brown eyes, so I didn't worry about them changing color. I haven't had any circles under my eyes, but the rims of my eyelids have darkened a little. Which is okay by me.

teresa, you said "I would like thicker longer lashes, but when I heard one of the side effects could turn my green eyes to brown". And yes that can happen. The stuff they use is the same type of thing as one of my glaucoma meds....and it did change my eye color somewhat.....not totally blue to totally brown, but I now have some brown overtones in them. AND an area of skin under my bottom lash is now a reddish brown that I have to use a coverup on. But in my case, I didn't have a choice. (I do have thicker, longer lashes though.)

The dr told me it doesn't do the color change on everyone.

This is really interesting - I am in peri menopause - age 49. I am blond, my eyebrows are starting to turn grey/white, and over the last few months I have really seen a difference in my eyelashes! My daughter is getting married next year & I have been thinking about either the latrisse or falsh eyelashes - a weave? I use mascara every day. for some women lipstick is the "item" they can't leave the house without - for me it is mascara. any advice?

Thanks

I did some research on eye color changing and it can happen when the medicine is used directly in the eyes but is almost unheard of while using Latisse on just the lids. Plus it would happen slowly and it would be easy to stop using it if there was any change. My eyes are green and I saw no change.

I haven't tried it. Makes me a little nervous.

Liz, I bought Purity a few weeks ago based on the glowing recommendations it has on Amazon. I love it, but it gives me awful cystic acne! I was hoping it was just a fluke, but I've flared up in each of the 3 experiments I've done and my skin clears right up when I stop using it. :( It's sad, I love everything about it. You're lucky you can use it!

@Chi83 i don't get acne from philosophy purity now but when i first started using it i did but kept using it since i had bought a big 32oz lol. 9 yrs ago i started using it because of the reviews too, i have oily skin and could barely stand to use a cream cleanser but it really works well for me now. make sure you rinse alot. this spring i got a clarisonic and that has made a tremendous difference in my skin's clarity, smoothness and firmness! sounds like a commercial but i can't live w/o it now. i use alot of their facial products along w/ most of the body and scent ones.

back to the eyelashes, i was tempted to try latisse, even thou i don' really need it, i was hoping for darkening and using no mascara. the eye color warning changed my mind, i admit. i have green-hazel eyes and don't want brown-hazel. my friends already has brown eyes and saw no changes in eye color or under eye color. ~ liz

Liz, I also got a Clarisonic earlier this year! I love it too. It was actually those reviews on Amazon that guided me to Purity. Hmm, maybe I'll keep trying it since I have a huge bottle as well. Maybe a toner afterward to get any leftover residue. Thanks for the advice!

Sorry for the mini-hijacking!
