It's Been A Very Long Time

Facebook is a dangerous place. I spend so many hours there I have neglected my other forums!!

I see many many familiar faces/names and of course a few new ones!

Let me re introduce myself. I am Trish! I lived in California most of my life and relocated to South Carolina in 2003. Some of you might remember our cross country move with 100 roses, 7 cats, 5 dogs and 3 children. I can not tell you how many people in our path offered us a warm bed to sleep in on that trip.

I started off in the rose forums here. I have worked in the nursery business for many many years. Arena Roses, Ashdown Roses and now Motlow Creek Gardens. I have made so many wonderful friends here.

I have missed you all and thought I should check in. Plus, I need to meet some of our newer friends!

It has been a long time! Welcome back! I know you had a birthday just a few days ago and if I knew you'd be popping in I'd have started a birthday post. Hope you had a great day!

Okay, let me clarify it a little. An imported engine is okay for this argument as long as the parent company owns the factory. Just buying Chinese engines and sticking your decal on them doesn't count. Honda engines are imported but they come from a Honda plant. Engines from the Yang Shen Bicycle and Long March Missle Factory are not acceptable unless they're on a Yang Shen branded mower. If B&S builds engines in China or Mexico, they would be included. It's like my Saturn VUE; it has an engine made in England by a GM subsidiary, so I would have to exclude Saturn from a list of car brands that make their own engines. In other words, there is not a Saturn engine plant in England. On the other hand there is a Ford engine plant in Canada, so my Ford truck would be on the list. So, I maintain that if B&S is producing mowers at the old Murray facility with B&S engines and a B&S logo on the deck, that puts them on a very short list with Honda.

Nice lights...what kind of florescent lights are they? I keep many of my cacti in my garage in a dormant state with virtually no water and light (temps stay in the 40s in there all winter long). I treat the succulents and cacti in my sunroom under HID and LED grow lights, for the most part, as if it is winter for them, too - i.e., less frequent watering and making sure they dry out pretty thoroughly before I water again. They all slow down significantly for me even with the lights. Some warm weather growers show some signs of growth (e.g., my mammillaria bombycina is flowering right now, and my Pseudolithos migiurtinus is definitely plumping up and budding) and my cool weather/winter growers are definitely cranking under the light..so they get watered more frequently. Temps in my room drop to 50 at night...65-70 in the day during the coldest part of winter. The room warms progressively as we move toward spring. I would recommend that you continue to water carefully even under the lights. It will still be a lot less intense than natural sunlight. A light meter will show you that pretty readily. All of my plants know it is not summer, even the ones growing under a 1000w metal halide bulb. When the seasons shift, they sense it even under the lights (I have skylights and windows in there, too) and start to grow more enthusiastically. Then, my dormant summer growers start to wake, too. The other thing you might want to think about is to be sure that you are varying your day night temps (I apologize if I am covering things you already know) to assure that you are allowing CAM to occur. When I'm asked to ID an unknown rose, especially one found on someone's property, the first thing I do is to eliminate all roses commonly used as rootstock. Many old, unknown roses are feral rootstock whose grafted variety died long ago. From your photos and description, I think this may be the case ... and you may have a form of Rosa canina. What do you consider "astronomical"? Most farm sink bases will run from $600-$1200 in a middle of the road cabinet line. Add in the decorative side columns and you'll be $900-$1600 depending on how decorative you want. You can always build a plain platform from 3/4" plywood and use a fabric curtain for below. Decorative columns are expensive though, even from an aftermarket seller. Look at the Outwater catalog for the appliques and make your own columns from a plywood box.

I promise to be a good girl and not leave my chair for so long again. I really enjoy this forum and everyone here.

The East coast is awesome!! I can't believe we have been here for so long. The kids are all out of school and my youngest is doing Basic Training in the Army over in Georgia. Can you believe he was only in 6th grade when we got here? We are so proud of him! I have spent all morning trying to find the best car rental to drive over to see his graduation. Two weeks and he will then go onto Airborne School. His training should keep him stateside for at least the rest of this year.

We still have most of the fur kids. Two of our oldest cats have gone over the Rainbow Bridge in the last few months. I am dreading the coming year as most of our animals all seem to be roughly the same ages. Every one is in good health so maybe they will stay that way! Our oldest dog is getting slower though.

I will hunt down the card exchange Tami! I would love to do that again.

My son will be in Georgia for Airborne. He is at Ft. Benning. I was able to go to Family Day last month and I love that whole area. I was amazed at how big the cities are around it. We spent an entire afternoon wandering the mall and it almost felt like we were back in Southern California! As for my sanity and that move, all I can say is I am planning on dying right here in this house. I don't ever want to move again. Just thinking about it makes me break out in hives.... Thank you all so much for the warm welcome back.
