DH is having a nasty reaction to Band Aids (pic)

As you know, DH had back surgery on the 19th of this month. The doctor sent him home with a bunch of band aids for his incision. I used them for the first couple of days, but they were really too small and I hated trying to peel them off of the incision itself so I went to the store and bought Band-Aid Brand Large Adhesive Pads. They were the perfect size. Before this, I had gotten him Band-Aid Brand Large Water Proof pads for the shower. Both Band-Aid products have latex in them, or so they say on the box. DH had no adverse reactions to the waterproof pads. However, the picture below is what happened from him wearing the regular large Band-Aid for less then 1 day. You can clearly see the square from where the Band-Aid was. It is bleeding and seeping. I can't find a mailing address for the Band-Aid company. I emailed them this morning and as of now I haven't heard back from them. I am thinking that I will have to take him to see the doctor in order to prevent an infection.

What would you do if you were us?

P.S. The brown tape is what the doctor put on it to help keep the incision together after the surgery. There were 3 to begin with the other 2 have fallen off, which is normal. This one will eventually fall off also.

Heather it looks like what my daughter ended up with! Latex intolerance. She had to even have the stitches removed early, cause of the latex thread.

Has a nasty scar now.

Leave the bandaid off!!!

You can develope an intolerance to latex at any time...

My daughter has developed it in the last few years...They even give her early morning appts. before the air gets heavy with latex powder from the gloves...they said it can cause lungs problems...

Sounds kind of silly to me...but I've seen how bad she breaks out from having it touch her skin.

Kitty - I have a tank, I could DO that! I'm in 9b, and we did get some nippy weather last winter (my first here, so not sure it's customary), I think we had 18 or so days where it got down to 28? No horrible storms after a big wind storm that hit the week before Thanksgiving and did lots of damage around the county, but none at my house, TG! I was relying on an online weather site to tell me how cold it was, aside from COLD, but I got myself some thermometers, so I'll see just how cold it gets here at MY house, not a mile down the road and up the hill. Last winter was quite the learning experience, as I lost a lot of plants - sob, wail! I replaced some of them, and this year I've moved some stuff into the house, and walled the cats away with chicken wire. REALLY hope it works and they don't mess with them, or eat them (and poison themselves!) Other stuff I've resigned myself to not having again while I live here.

Pat, Not all of my tomato plants are that big, but most of the cherries make big plants and Tess's Land Race which is a currant size is normally a huge plant. My largest plant this year is a greek tomato called Santorini, (thanks Lynn for the seed) but makes a small tomato. I am 5'6", and it is way over my head already. It seems to me that when I lived in southern Oklahoma the prevailing wind was normally from the SW and when we saw a storm brewing in Texas in Montague County we prepared for the worst because it always seemed to come straight for us. The big tornado they had there seemed to follow that same logic. In my area now, the wind seems to come from the south, although Kansas does share a few storms with us, but high wind is not the norm for us here, . I also live in a rather congested lake community and have a lot of buildings near my garden, both mine and neighbors. Since I live on a slight curve, I pretty well have a building providing protection from all directions, plus tall trees everywhere. So when I mounted my arch, my thought process went to sunshine availability rather than protection from the wind. At the time, it was the gateway to my garden so I just angled it so both sides got sunshine. After extending my garden and putting in a walkway, I decided to move it. Since nothing could be planted under it because of dense foliage, it just made sense to me to put it over the walkway. This does limit the sunshine a little, but shade doesn't seem to be a bad thing this year. It is hard to know what to plan for since my Spring weather is normally very wet. I have a few raised beds which I had planned to use for spring crops because of the excessive Spring rain keeping my garden too wet to plant, but changed my mine and planted asparagus in one and strawberries in another. The third will probably be used for onions next year, since mine had to tread water for a few weeks this Spring. However, when the rain stops and the heat is excessive those raised bed dry out too fast and require more water. I can't win. If I had a tomato henge like Diane and Steve have built, I would probably have welded a ring to the top of each post and run cable from one pole to the other across the length of the row and have those rings with a clip on them on the cables. When conditions were normal I would have nothing on the clips, but for hail threats, I would clip on a big tarp (probably many sewn together), and for excessive heat I would have fabric ready to go on. I wouldn't worry about it being shade cloth since sheets sown together from the thrift shop would serve the same purpose. I would probably hit the thrift shops all winter so I could find all white ones. Of course I don't know how I can fix mine. Maybe I need to hire Steve to weld me four posts like his for my outside rows and I can use my cages in between. LOL Diane tried to pass it off as someone elses idea, but I have compared the two and I would easily choose Diane's. I am laughing as I type this because I am trying to improve on an already great system which is always what I accuse my husband of doing. He always waits until I have finished something then tells me how I could have done it better. Even his friends ask for his advice after they finish something, then sometimes make the changes. I tell him that he is one of the best managers that I have ever known but that he never had an original idea in his life. (grin) At our house the garden is mine, but Al does seem to enjoy playing with it a little in the Spring when the weather is still cool. He will till, move trellis, pick up compost, shovel it all out of the truck and put it where I want it, all those things to get the garden ready, but each year he SUGGESTS that I put things like trellis and such in a permanent place and run irrigation to it. Maybe...some year. With old age creeping up on me (not here yet of course), I know that would be a good idea.

Hello, Thanks everyone :) Wanye - I too finally came to the conclusion that it was a blotched water snake. I did not get help from my local wildlife center. I sent in the image and was told that it was a dimaond back. I knew this was not correct. I was then told it was the blotched water snake by - Clint at Texassnakes.net. He was very nice and quite helpful (SUPER NICE GUY). The animal control officer that I sent the image to, said it was a yellow belly water snake, whatever - I dont care as long as it is not a cottonmouth. I have let the snake alone - and will purchase some tongs if I need to relocate it because my husband just cannot come to grips with a water snake in our yard. Otherwise - it is free to live in my garden. Besides with the water source, if he were to kill this one, there would just be more anyway, especially since I have seen the babies for two summers now. Me and my fourteen year old daughter are perfectly ok with being bitten by a non-venomous snake. It only hurts for a little while, not much more than a bee sting in my humble opinion. Speeking of bee stings - I hate to kill things - so much -that a couple of years ago - I moved a honey bee hive (see I truly do hate to kill) I called a couple of beekeepers, and no one would come out - so I moved them myself :)-(Thank God my husband was working in Japan - he would have totally freaked out on this one too) Only ended up with two stings - and that is because when I went back for the second load of bees, guess I did not get the queen the first time. I was too lazy to tape my sleeves to my gloves. I moved them a couple of blocks away to a open field. I looked so funny carrying a box of bees, dressed all in white - and having a hat and my husbands old jersey stretched over it, I had to peek through the holes in the shirt. (my home made version of a bee keepers suit:) I can only imagine what the people driving down the main road where thinking!!! Back to the snakes. I would like to know however - are they agressive by nature, or only if provoked? Meaning, do they try to reatreat if given the chance, or do they stand their ground - there are only a few of these types snakes that I am aware of, but not sure about the water snakes. We spent an eon agonizing over how to incorporate a computer into the kitchen -- the computer is where we get all of our recipes, all of our music, as well as all of our news/movies/info/entertainment. We came _this close_ to buying an i-mac and putting it on an articulating arm mounted to the side of the pantry (which is next to the prep area). Our thinking was that it could face someone seated at the island for t.v. or could be used for recipe sites in the prep area, while also being able to play music or podcasts over the in-ceiling speakers. In the end after visiting the Apple store and talking at length with an APple guy (who happens to be a lawyer by day and about to embark on his own kitchen renovation), with his help we went an altogether different route, although the new i-macs are beautiful, we realized that we'd rather search for recipies (and music, and everything else) on our individual laptops while seated in the living room and then carry the laptop into the kitchen as opposed to doing this while sitting or standing in the kitchen. By our way of thinking, the hours that the kitchen computer would get used would not be enough to justify buying a new computer for the job, and most of what we wanted it to do could be better done on a laptop (and I'd argue even better done on a brand spankin' new i-book, but so far no dice). Thus this is the route we chose instead: 1 - speakers installed in the kitchen ceiling (and living room ceiling too)and wired to the back of the pantry, we had our electrician put an outlet inside it 2 - a shelf installed in the pantry that holds the following: 2- powered amps (0ne for each set of speakers), and an Airport Express that my laptop (or any computer in the household) that allows me to opt to play through the in-ceiling speakers (I-tunes, or Pandora mostly, but could play anything the computer can get to). 3 - a slate lazy susan (ordered from Amazon) to hold a laptop on the island while cooking, the thought here is that it keeps it up out of spills, and also turns as the cook changes positions while cooking. 4 - as for the t.v., there are lots of small, high-res lcd t.v.'s at Sam's Club/Costco that would do the job and fit nicely in a small space for less than $300, it didn't seem to make sense to buy a dedicated computer to primarily be a t.v. (at 3x the cost of the t.v.). We don't actually watch t.v.(just Netflix, I-tunes t.v. shows and Hulu) so it hasn't been an issue, but if we did, say want t.v. going while in the kitchen, II think I'd buy an inexpensive one rather than buying another/dedicated computer to be a t.v. (though that could be done as well). 5 I'd till like to add a wireless keyboard and mouse tothe laptop because they're under $100, cute as a button and would allow me to not worry about having messy hands on the keyboard while cooking. I'm allergic to tape, Band Aids, elastic (my underwear!), but don't seem to react to Latex specifically. I use paper tape when I need a bandage and have to tell hospitals about my intolerance so they'll use paper tape, too. Band Aid brand makes other types of tape, so check the labels since your DH seems to be allergic to Latex.

However, after DH's back surgery in the "city", they said to buy Glad Press n' Seal and cover the incision with that for his showers. By golly! It works! I've told the local docs and nurses about it and they're glad to know that. It sticks to skin long enough to shower.

I do too They tried 3 different tapes at dialysis ,my arm gets red marks where all tape,bandaids lay.it dosnt blister but gets bright red.

I have always been allergic to tape and bandaids. If I get blood drawn, by the time I get to the car and take off the tape my arm is red and inflamed.

I don't think there's anything the company can do about that. He must just be allergic to the tape.

I would let it air dry and keep it clean. Incision looks good. I don't think the doctor can do anything for it. Just keep an eye on it.

My husband had back surgery last year--we just wrapped (him)-- his incision in plastic wrap to keep it from getting wet in the shower but left it open the rest of the time so it could breathe. I think he only had a bandage on for a few days--I am a big believer in letting cuts or incisions breathe.
Hope your husband gets better soon. Please tell him to take his time with recovery. My husband did too much too soon and needs some more surgery now. Sheila

I do that. When they take blood or put in an IV I take that tape off ASAP. If not, it will take weeks for the red marks to go away.

I'd do like Judy. Keep it clean and give it air.
The druggist may have an idea of what you could put on the weepy areas.
Hows DH doing otherwise?

My skin rots under Band-aid brand bandages too. I think it is from the adhesive. I switched to Curad many years ago and never had problems with those.

I can use paper tape for short periods of time, but if it is left my skin turns red and will get ozzy if left.

I don't think it is any problem from the company. We all react to various things differently.

I'm a believer in air for healing too. As long as it is healed enough so infection can't get in, leave is uncovered, unless it is a matter of clothing rubbing on it.

Hope he heals soon.

I remember a dr from eons ago telling me that it's often not the first 'dose' of something that produces allergic reactions. He said it's often the build up of it in your system.

I too am allergic to bandaids, normal bandaging tapes, etc. They always use paper tape on me, and that's all I have in my house. You might want to let his dr know and ask his advice about what to put on the infected areas.

I wish him all the best. It's hard enough to have incisions without the added problems this is causing.

I too have problems with bandage adhesive. I always ask for paper tape when being bandaged after giving blood. I don't have a problem with that at all.

You can buy it in the stores as well. The professionals use Tenderskin Hypoallergenic Paper Tape, can't remember what it's called at the drug store.

This might not be a good idea but you could call his Doctor and ask if it's ok, how about some Neosporin? That would at least cover the weepy spots and keep infection out while he's healing.

Paper tape is good, check with the pharmasist. Some brands are better/worst than others. Also on the skin, away from in sore, try GOLD BOND ointment in a tube with Aloe Vera. Or spray Bactine on it, but check with the Dr first.

I too am allergic to bandaids, adhesive, etc. I recently had a mole removed, told the doctor I was allergic to bandaids and to please use paper tape. He did, but,,,,,
he sprayed where the mole had been with liquid adhesive..duh!! I had a horrible rash..I thought the area where the mole was had become infected. When I called him he knew immediately what the problem was. Never saying I'm sorry, I forgot...nothing!!! What was he thinking????

He told me to use a heavy vinegar solution in ice cold water and use a wash cloth to dip in the solution and hold over the area several times a day for 1 to 15 minutes at a time..... Maybe this will help your hubby. I hope so.
