Question about money orders...

Have any of you had any experience with cashing them?? I got one from a friend in Canada.My bank would not cash it as it needed a 9 digit routing number. The post office said they couldnt cash it(we live in a tiny town,one window post office)because it was Canadian. I took it to a second post office,where they said yes,they could cash it but I had to buy stamps to do so. I asked her how many stamps and she said"I dont KNOW!" I am livid!!! My post office cashed one just awhile back but the person who did it has retired. I tried 4 places to cash it and no one will. Any info on this????Thanks!

I used to get them quite often in one of my businesses but not from out of the country, I never had a problem cashing them at the post office or my bank. this article may give you some ideas.

Go to your bank, ask for the branch manager. Banks do know how to cash them, we did it all the time when I worked at the bank. Sad to say many of the people at banks now days are only trained to do limited jobs, and many just refuse to (and are not allowed) even find out. If they refuse, find out where the head office and contact them.
Do ever listen and accept --well, we don't do this--
from a former bank employee who was trained in everything from making loans to giving customer service.
Sorry to vent, but it is a big peeved issue for me.

That depends. If you're ordering from an own root place which grows them in pots, probably not. If you're placing a bare root order, I would think it would. J&P used to have stock of staples like Iceberg available well into autumn, still bare root and stored in cold storage. A local commercial grower bought them regularly throughout the summer, potted them under cover and sold them as needed. But, even at near freezing, the longer they're held in cold storage, the more stored nutrients they've relied upon to survive, weakening them as those stores are depleted. As long as those plants are growing and properly maintained, go for it. Personally, I wouldn't want a stored bare root which had been held ten months. Kim

First thing to get straight is the separation of Medicare from Medicaid. Medicare is a federally administered program of health care for those who are eligible and are aged 65 or older, or younger people with disabilities and people with End Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplant). Medicaid is healthcare for the needy; a federally and state funded program. Banks don't look twice at joint checking accounts. It's very common with so many people looking after elderly parents, etc., who no longer feel inclined or are unable to write out, sign, and mail checks for their bills and routine household expenses. To keep a little cash on hand when credit cards and bank cards are no longer used. What they (or someone like Medicaid within the 5 year look back inquiry period) would look at would be a cashing in of assets - stocks, bonds, Treasury notes, etc.- putting the proceeds in a joint account and systematically draining it, then applying for Medicaid benefits. If your Mother has assets (in addition to a pension or Social Security which the nursing home will take) those should rightly be used for her upkeep for as long as they last. If there's an inheritance received while in the nursing home, the home will take that for her upkeep. Even though, in your scenario, a will is involved and you are to inherit upon her death. That would indicate the inheritance was expected to be left to be passed down again. Not too much a chance of that happening unless death occurred before the inheritance and assets were exhausted. I realize you're information gathering for a situation that may or may not arise in the future. You do have to be aware though - and please don't take any offense as none is intended - that many of us on the forums as well as out in the world, don't look kindly on deliberate spend downs to preserve an inheritance. In other words, if you've got the means, you pay the freight. My mother did because that's what her estate was for. I expect to do the same myself.

Defined list is simply the things you have decided to do---as opposed to the things you want/intend to do. If you want to remove the carport before renovating the kitchen, for instance. The list I gave was the order of procedure for each job, not the order of jobs. Example: renovating kitchen would start with demolition. Then changes to doors/windows/walls/etc. Then electrical/plumbing changes. Then sheet rock. Then setting flooring height under the base cabinets. This step depends on the type of flooring used. Wood flooring should be done as the last step to minimize damage. Ceramic/stone tile can be installed since it is more difficult to damage. Notice I did not say installing the flooring, since installing expensive flooring under cabinets is silly IMHO. But, the flooring under the cabinets needs to be at the same level as the finished flooring(so dish washer/etc can be installed after the cabinets are installed. Then painting, then cabinets/countertops. Then backsplash and appliances. Now you see there is no absolute order---it depends o the job being done. In a room where flooring is the only change, it does make sense to install the flooring before moving furniture. We just bought a foreclosure(4 years ago). Before we moved in I did the following: *Painted all the rooms Replaced front/rear entrance doors Removed and cleaned base molding(original and matching all the other woodwork in the house) Replace all plumbing fixtures(all were leaking) Replaced ceiling fans/lights *Raised kitchen countertop, installed new tile and backsplash. *Installed unfinished wood flooring, sanded, and finished. *Installed new stone tile min kitchen That was the general list and from first to last. The starred items were done from start to finish as a single job. The others were done during or between the single jobs. I did the painting first and installed the flooring last to minimize damage.

About to order cabinets-- inset question! help!

We've been using our Crown Point inset cabinets for a bit over 3 1/2 years now and have had no sticking problems. We live in a century-old middle New England farmhouse where it gets quite humid in the summer and dry in the winter. We use no ac or other humidity control in the summer--no problem. Even though we live quite close to CP, I did all the measuring myself. I saw no sense in having someone else do it since we planned to work on leveling the old wood floors as best as possible after ordering the cabinets and knocking out a chimney, rearranging windows and pulling out the cellar stairs that ate into our kitchen space. I enjoyed working with our designer (Christine Dunleavy) via email. I imagine all the designers at CP must be quite excellent since I haven't read any negatives in the 4+ years I've been following this forum. I know our kd was quick to get back to us with great ideas/answers to questions/requested info. A benefit I hadn't thought about was that every correspondence was in writing so it was easy to look back/revisit early ideas. Everything worked out well--cabinets fit beautifully. Our designer gave us some wiggle room where the cabinets could be scribed to exact dimensions when the spacing was critical. I agree with mamadadapaige that the quartersawn oak is incredibly beautiful. I'm kicking myself a little bit for not choosing it. Good luck with your decision and your project!

Caroline, is it drawn in Canadian or US funds? Was it issued by a Canadian post office?

I would try to speak with a postmaster.

Caroline the postoffice can cash it but its true you do have to purchase something..so make it easy on yourself buy a book of stamps..I am a postal worker(very disgruntal)

and to add to what Mariend said........it's easier just to say no and then not have to be bothered. My husband taught me that all I have to do is step up or ask for higher in the food chain and usually someone will see the error of their ways.

We are in the process of changing banks.....why because with a very decent size amount of cash in Bank of America they feel it necessary to charge us for travelers checks....we talked to the bank where we usually have to get them and they said.....sorry you have to have an account and my DH says, I have an investment account so she called the supervisor and of course it was approved....then she said, why don't you have an account with us since your investments are with our group Wachovia......My husband said.....because you charge an ATM fee and I'm not going to pay to get my own money out of your bank.....She said.........Oh poo poo I can make that go away....and she did so we are transferring our accounts tomorrow. But the point is...how many do you suppose are still paying ATM fees when they are obviously negoiatable.........

A friend of mine who has a small plant co-op accepts payment via Paypal and Money Orders. She says though that Money Orders MUST be purchased from a PO in order for her PO to cash them. Her PO won't cash them if they were bought anywhere other than a PO.

I'd think a bank manager should know how to handle a Canadian MO.

A few years ago I bought a cookbook off EBay.
The seller lives in Pittsburgh.

I sent her a Canadian money order in US funds and she had no problem cashing it. Postal money orders here in Canada can only go up to $999, and your bank should have no trouble cashing it.

Careful, though, as to how much exchange they may charge, if it isn't payable in U.S. funds (but I expect that it will be).

A few years ago a lady whose aunt had died in Calgary and left her a bequest had the banks in her area (Texas or near it) want an arm and a leg to cash it, so I told her to send it back and ask for the exchange to be done in Calgary, as they do that every day and only charge about 1%, 2% at the outside.

She did and was happy with the result.

A number of small U.S. banks, especially ones some distance from the border, look on Canadian money more or less as Monopoly money: the varying colours for different denominations seems to get their shirt-tails mor or less tied into knots.
