News article that caught my eye this morning

I had to laugh when I read this in our paper. I just highlighted a bit of the article.

"There are good jobs to be had in the auto sector, employers say(But mom shouldn't set up your job interview)"

CAMBRIDGE Despite the gloom and doom over manufacturing going to China, there are good jobs in auto-related industries here, if you have education and skills and show some enthusiasm, employers said during a panel discussion about auto sector related jobs.

But if you are young and trying to get your foot in the door, here are a few tips: Don't show up at the interview in a hoodie; don't have your mother apply for the job for you; and when someone offers you a $17 an hour summer contract, don't ask for three weeks holidays.

As unbelievable as it sounds, employers have had these "facepalm" experiences, conveyed during a luncheon organized by the Workforce Planning Board of Waterloo Wellington Dufferin, for about 50 guidance counsellors and teachers involved in priming today's youth for the job market.

"It might be cool for Mark Zuckerberg to wear a hoodie and baseball cap to a board meeting, but it is not appropriate for a job interview," said Michael Ritchie, the chief executive of CGL Manufacturing Inc. in Guelph.

Also, you should be prepared to pay your dues, he added. "We've got to kill this culture of entitlement," Ritchie said. "You wouldn't believe the number of people who will say, "I don't work afternoon or night shifts. I only work days. "

He also had a few strong words for parents.

"Parents need to know that it is not appropriate to call to set up an interview for your child, nor is it appropriate to call and follow up after the interview," Ritchie said.

The audience laughed in disbelief, but Ritchie said some parents do that. "About two weeks ago, a parent showed up at our facility and Guelph and said "I'd like to submit a resume for my son. " Meanwhile, the son was outside, in the car. "So who wants the job? The parent or the child?" Richie asks.

Other speakers also told such stories, including the one about the job applicant who expected a three week holiday in a $17 an hour eight-week summer job. Another was about someone whose mother came in for the employee's performance review, and fielded the questions for him.

Helicopter parenting at its finest. Unfortunately, I don't think it's going away anytime soon.

My husband also has an aroma I find very pleasing. I don't think it's all pheromones, I do think humans are scent specific. But then again, it could be I'm genetically programmed to appreciate his genetic aroma. LOL. Maybe another female would not find his aroma so pleasant. Don't you suspicion that things like that we may/or may not notice on a conscious level play into who we find attractive? I don't think it's all cultural or emotionally determined.

Julia.....I would say 3 out of every 4 scapes are at the top edge or in the foliage. Usually there is one out of four well up and above the foliage....rather strange, but that is the way it behaves here. Each bloom though is always beautiful and near perfect. Laurel......I think it's worth having and keeping....but it is a Front row plant....for sure. I think it would get lost behind any other's. Andrea.....I am not sure...off the top of my head about how tall it is....I can check it tomorrow. It must not be extreme one way or the other.....otherwise I would have noticed it. I check in the am. I think one of the reasons many enjoy it is due to it being a well known producer making awesome offspring....I just love the bloom. I was taught well Jan....LOL LOL Thanks!! I think it went from 2 fans to 4 this year...but I would have to check to be sure....old age prevents my remembering...hehehe I'm really glad I got KCK....it will always have a place here...:) A Few More...... Thank you SO much for posting, your plants are drop dead gorgeous! I've never seen or heard of Paradise Joyce, that's a very pretty hosta. I've also never seen a picture of Old Glory...I think I have one of them dead in the pot that didn't overwinter. I'll have to be sure to find another one now that I've seen how pretty she is.

You know whats going on? those Great X plants in a one gallon planter look SO GOOD, I bet they sell tons of them to people that don't know they can be tricky. They just show off so much at that size. My Great X colors have not been that good the last two years with the killer long heat and drought we have had ...the ones in the most shade are getting bigger and better, the one I have getting the most sun has sunk into the ground, I didn't know how to plant very well when I first started. I used to much homemade compost and didn't firm up the center of the hole making a solid spot for the crown... thats the oneI pulled up, and replanted this year. It needed it anyway. It was planted in a rock garden and the plastic under the rock was choking the plant... Live and learn, or is that Kill plants OR learn? hahaha

That does NOT surprise me. The country is full of "helicopter parents" (those who "hover" over their child's every activity, no matter what their age.)

I've talked to so many people lately who are in their early twenties and they do have such a feeling of entitlement. They've said things like, "Well, I just told my boss that I'd do this and this and thus and such, but I was NOT gonna do that..." Uh, excuse me, he's the boss. As long as it's not immoral or illegal or dangerous - that's part of the job description! I had a job as a newly married lady. HATED that job. Stressed to the max, bosses from hell, etc. Would go home everyday at noon, bawl my head off, take some aspirin and something for my stomach and go back to work. Lived in a small town, there weren't many jobs and I knew we HAD to have the money. None of that seems to bother kids today.

Can you tell that you got in one of my areas of contention? LOL

I sort of disagree with helicoptering going by the wayside. Do it long enough, and the children will grow up incapable and what happens when the parents are gone?! HA! It'll end, sure enough, since they won't know what to do with themselves.

I think there is more of this going on than we see as we just seem to write things off. It is similar to those either playing sports or taking tests where no one fails even though they really do. I call it accepting responsibility for my actions, rewards and failures. Everyone fails in something at sometime. Just go on.

A teacher in Edmonton got disciplined, later fired for giving a Zero on an assignment that wasn't completed/turned in ... as it was against the school's/board's policy.

I've been thinking that I should write them to ask what mark they would assign to an assignment that was not turned in?

Maybe a "1"? "2"?

Or would anything less than "10" (or even "50"?) be considered degrading (if you'll pardon the expression) to the student?

The guy has found a position in a private school ... but possibly in a different area.

A dear friend retired after teaching MANY years. She was feeling a bit sad, but her last day made her glad to be leaving.

One of her 'entitled' students -- smart, but lazy -- failed to turn in a paper that made up a large percentage of his final grade. She failed him. His wealthy parents took it up with her, and she stood her ground. They took it to the superintendent. They didn't want him going into high school 'with that blot on his transcript', and it would be 'inconvenient' to the family's plans for the summer if the boy had to attend summer school to make up the credit. The superintendent took it up with my friend. She stood her ground.

On her last day at school, after a good-bye party, she learned the superintendent had changed the student's grade to 'pass'.

A year later the family contacted my friend, asking her to tutor their son, and she did. The family chauffeur would bring him to her home and wait in the limo until the session was over.

By now I suppose he is a vice president in the family firm I wonder what he took away from this experience...

I've known people like that. They would rather be unemployed and living at home than to accept a job they feel is beneath them or doesn't pay enough.

I also know someone in his 30's who graduated from MIT, has never worked a day in his life and his mother is the definition of helicopter parent. She lives in a different state but drives hundreds of miles to his place to take him to doctor appointments. She handles all his bills, calls everyone who he needs to talk to, sets up all his appointments and gives him a monthly allowance. She makes excuses for him all the time about how it's better he doesn't work because he would just stop showing up at work. She doesn't seem to see that she is the reason why because he knows he can just goof off all day and live a cushy life. He's very smart and perfectly capable. It's pretty sad.

I agree with everything said here. This helicoptering is unbelievable and a far cry from the way we raised kids. Today's kids feel entitled by this and are in a real case of rude awakening when it ends and they have to take care of themselves.
