What a Birthday I had!

Thursday was my 90th birthday. My oldest daughter surprised me by arranging a stopover on her way from Wisconsin to New Mexico. Two of my daughters live very close by. They had planned a birthday dinner which my younger grandson was able to attend, too.

The most fun was my first Skype experience. With much pre-planning by my family and using two laptops, two phones and an Ipod I received a Happy Birthday serenade from my daughter and her husband in Ohio, my granddaughter in California, my son-in-law in new Mexico, my granddaughter in Virginia, and my grandson in Massachusetts. That is my whole immediate family!!

Almost worth getting this old to have an experience like that!!

Glad you were able to share and make new memories for all. There is a way you can print from Skype but I don't know it.

Well, what a lovely lot of messages to see! Thank you so much, all of you. Yes,LA, Saturday was the day - but it all gets a bit blurry :) So many wonderful plantings in your photos. I think if anything has changed over the last decade it has been the beautiful, relaxed, informal use of roses and perennials in so many people's gardens now shown on this Forum - moving away from the old 'roses only' tyranny. For me, of course, this was the essence of Graham Thomas's (and David Stone's) lifetime in roses. The recovery of so many of the Old Roses was crucial, but just as important has been the re-discovery of how to garden with them. I've had a day dead-heading the rose garden at Mottisfont. A quiet day - the others are away at a trade exhibition - on my own except for a regular trickle of visitors. Sunshine, blue skies and a cooling breeze. Maybe this was my real birthday. Ingrid - especially to you - thank you so much for your kind words. I hope you will soon be seeing much greater photos from your own new garden, and it is a pleasure to have your company on this Forum. Best wishes Jon

The leaves look almost like the pictures someone just posted a couple weeks ago....lighter green marbled like.....I have never seen anything like that before. I hope it's something else. Thanks, Ken. I'll keep an eye on them. I have sprayed all my Sedum with Pyola. They were/are severely infected with aphids....another unprecedent event in my yard. :-(

Thanks! It's been a busy, busy week with, first my b'day and now DH's (today). His big b'day party was Friday evening and, I swear, I feel like we've been doing b'day stuff for a month now! This morning for his special breakfast of Huevos Rancheros, DD used the blue & white plates. For tonight's dinner, I guess we'll be using the red Talavara-look ones. I'm making Beef Tenderloin Medallions with a Brandy Cream Sauce, fresh asparagus and ?. I'm still thinking about the starch part. Maybe Wild & Brown Rice with Toasted Pinon Nuts & Fresh Cilantro. As much as I'd love to use the pink/red transferware, it's too feminine for DH's b'day dinner, so we're going for the Talavara. Gosh, I love my new transferware, though! Kathleen, I was hoping that they'd arrive yesterday but I'm still waiting. Karen, I redid all my dish storage yesterday, but couldn't bear to put my tureen in a closed cupboard. I hope you can find one yourself someday, too, for such a great price. As for my cherub santo, don't you love it? I do and we keep it on our bedroom credenza all year, so that I can always see it. But, until I joined this forum, I'd never thought to use it for my table centerpiece. You all have inspired me so much! Oh, I haven't mentioned it to DH yet, but I found a great buy online at another auction (insert embarrassed face here) for these beautiful luncheon plates the other day. I probably won't use them until Autumn, but aren't they pretty? They'll arrive late this week sometime, I imagine. When I showed them to DD, she again told me that I must be going through change-of-life, because I'm buying so many new dishes lately (LOL)!! Anyhoo, here's a pic of them from the website. The pattern is called "Pinecone" and they're from WS George on or before 1954. Lynn

Oh how very special. Happy Birthday.

My mom is visiting, just over night and she is 83. I sure hope that I get to wish her a Happy 90th Birthday someday.

My mom just celebrated her 90th birthday August 24th and my mother in law is having hers Sept 21st. We are surprising her with a party and mini reunion.
The Skype thing was a fantastic idea.

That is so cool! Hurray for technology! Imagine how great things will be in 50 years. I remember when TVs only had three channels and you had to wait an hour or so to make a long-distance phone call. No computers or cell phones. And Happy Birthday from me!

I had no idea you were approacing such a milestone. Congratulations to you. My mom just turned 91 and is finally entering the computer age. We bought her an ipad! And she is learning to use it.
