Back from 6 week cruise lunch visit/talk!

Shirley, is a dear friend, and has been for 10 years. She lost her DH, to cancer, 4 years, this coming Feb. I so loved both she and her DH.

It's her nephew, and he's not captain of the ship but a First Officer or First Captain, on Royal Caribbean, that sails out of a port in England, and during half the year, does the Mediterranean, and the other half the British Isles.

He's at sea right now, comes in for two months, then out again. That is when we would go, BUT I have a cruise already booked for 8 days, for Feb. Only deposit, right now, and don't have to pay in full until Nov, so that gives us time to talk and see what we can do and afford. Shirley said it will be like paying for three cruises.

He will be coming to stay with her for a while, as he lives in Montreal, and won't be here until some time in late Oct. That is when we will get with him and see what we can work out, maybe for the spring/summer.

Shirley and I both, agreed, that two rooms would be good, amongst other topics of travel talk.

So, we'll see when he comes to stay with her at the end of Oct.

Gosh my friends 85 Mom year old just finished a 2 week Cruise.

I'd get board being at Sea.

I did the British Isles and didn't care much for it, except for the Norwegian Fjords which was awesome. The rest of it was just like being in the states. Everyone was so excited at seeing water falls that were about 30 tall which is nothing compared to what we have in this country. Since your cruise would be much longer it would be like 3 other cruises, but you will pay for it. I checked into a world tour which was 4 months and it cost $42,000., it sounded good, but I was on my second cruise and it was Alaska and of course I was having a blast. I figured out later it was not the cruising, but seeing a place I have always wanted to go. The British Isles cruise cost over $8,000 and that is a terrible waste if you are not excited and having fun. Good luck to you. Oh and you might think of places you would like to see, like Alaska or The Panama Canal, or Hawaii/Tahiti, etc. and take several cruises instead of one that might not be a first choice for you.

HAPPY DAD'S DAY TO ALL THE LURKER DADS!!!! It's pouring rain here---absolutely miserable but the fire danger level was high, so a higher power took over that situation, obviously! Yesterday middle DD and I hauled and DH and youngest DD stacked about 2 cords of wood at the new place. We took some trees out and a guy stripped them, cut them into rounds, and split them. We have 4 1/2 cords to haul and stack, but got a lot done during Baby V's nap. Today, despite the rain, I'm heading over there to try and finish the job. I really felt good getting the exercise, but took 2 Aleve when I got home, just in case! Wodka, I ordered the book. They didn't have it at the library here, but whilst I was at the library, I managed to check out 6 books on spritual and calming home interiors and one on island homes, so I have enough "picture" books to keep me busy until the book you suggested gets here. Milkdud: Here's my cell story. Bought a new phone and asked for a "local" island number. Sprint had to change my number 4 times before they told me they were "out" of island numbers and I finally ended up with a Seattle number! AND they cancelled my rebate for the phone because "I" changed my number so many times! Gadfrey! So, GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!!!! Canasta sounds fun whenever people describe it. I should check it out. Raeanne- I "use" the dogs at the shelter because I don't have time for my own dogs and the dogs there are happy to see me anytime! lol Well, the word must have gotten around this small town that I am trying to move because 2 college kids have called the office, offering to use their own trucks and move me for extra dough! Gotta love the go-getters! NHSuzanne- Bon Voyage!!! Got to the bottom of your foot problem---good one! But I am sorry for the diagnosis if there is no relief in sight. I know that the worst pains in my mind are headaches, back aches, and foot aches. I hope that, at least, there is a pain relief med out there that you can use to relieve some of that discomfort. Have fun on your ride, sistah! WE WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT UPON YOUR RETURN. Going off coffee for your feet, though, milkdud? I don't know if I could handle THAT!!! We're doing lunch out for Daddy's Day. The kids all made cards for him (even Baby V.) DH is at work today, so we're gonna pick him up and take him to a crowded restaurant! Warm fuzzies to all! Anele, I have totally "drunk the koolaid" when it comes to crossfit. When I was going to planet fitness, a crossfit box opened up in town. I emailed the coach and said "I'm 45 and going from being completely sedentary to going to the gym every day and doing 7 weight machines and 30 minutes of cardio". I was wondering where my fitness would need to be to start crossfitting?" The coach coaxed me into coming in and doing the three session on-ramp class, and the fitness evaluation. I couldn't even do a squat. I couldn't do a lunge. I couldn't jump rope.. My balance is just... Tragic. I have a bad knee, and I was 70 lbs overweight. I was definitely out of my comfort zone. I apologized about my capabilities the whole time they evaluated me. Then they asked me to come for a class and assured me they would modify the workouts to my level. There are a few ways in which crossfit is miraculous: 1. They have somehow managed to inculcate a supportive, encouraging tone into an industrial gym with loud aggressive music. Everyone takes pains to help each other, praise each other, encourage each other! I very quickly felt that no one was judging my weakness, only pleased for me that I was trying crossfit. Love the people! 2. The workouts are different every day. Some days they work on strength, some days agility, stamina/speed/flexibility.. Benchmark workouts are repeated every few months, so you can see the improvement. 3. MODIFICATIONS - this is key! For example, today I was told to do three sets of 10 pull-ups. I clearly can't just do them, but instead of telling me to skip that part, one day I will... They simply stretch 3 big rubber bands across for me to stand on. I bounce and pull-up. Then at the peak, I dig in and lower myself as slowly as possible. If bouncing makes the pull-ups too too easy, then a coach steals one of my rubber bands, making me pull a little to get my chin up.. If you can't run well, you can row. Can't do push-ups, do them on rings. 4. Performance psychology... So they taught me how to lift weights with decent form. Then they tested me for my maximum ability to safely lift.. Then: they put me in a team with a 35 year old guy who was 6'5" tall with full tattooed sleeves. Our team score was the time it took us to lift 65% of our max weight 50 times between the two of us. I was lifting 45 lbs. he was lifting 160 lbs. but while I lifted the weights 5 times, he had to hold all that weight at a collar position, straining. So you better believe I hurried!! And while he was struggling to lift 160 lbs 5 times, poor me, standing there, shaking, trying to hold my weight up. He hurried too! So we were each encouraged to perform better. It's diabolically clever!! A couple of things i've learned: I thought I was doing great doing 10 sit-ups. The first time I had to do 30, the coach told me I could take as long as I wanted, just get them done. You know what? It took me a while, but the next time he said do 30, I absolutely knew it was doable. And so I was willing to put a little more energy in to do it a little faster. And a few days later, I was asked to do 50. The confidence I had from doing 30 helped me do the fifty. 90 % of the game is mental! It really is! I may feel incredibly puny at crossfit, but I walk proud the rest of the day. One big thing I've learned is that your body has to warm up. Honestly, when doing a bunch of sit-ups, the first 30 are the worst. After that, you are warmed up, you find a rhythm and it gets easier, much. Then as you approach the end, it gets tougher again. But however hard you feel something is when you start, it won't stay that hard. Your body will loosen up and perform more efficiently. Being surrounded by fit people pushing themselves HARD is motivating. Changes my perception of what working out is. I have been doing crossfit for five weeks, and I can't believe the changes I'm seeing. The workout generally takes 20 min to 1 hour, and I go 5 days a week. My motto for this week is: walk in strong, crawl out stronger. Lol. In 5 weeks I've actually gained 1.3 lbs, but I've dropped two pants sizes, from a stuffed into my size 18 pants, to a 14!!! Kathleen, it's according to when and where you are going. Been to Cozumel a number of times, and twice during spring break, and that is NOT a great time to go, if you are a senior, want peace and quiet. Caribbean, I've never had an unpleasant experience. Alaska, twice, very upscale, quiet, pleasant, once on Celebrity and this past summer Golden Princess, which the latter was my favorite ship. Mediterranean cruise, fantastic! Carnival Freedom Fall foilage cruise, wonderfully quiet, almost too quiet :o) Those that go out of the port of Mobile, in my opinion are big time party, especially spring and summer. I've never witnessed fights, had people go overboard, but have seen drunks on spring break, college students as well as adults, and moreso when leaving port, which is big party time on the poolside deck.

Amy, You are a saint. I hope all the fun the kids had makes up for all the pain and tiredness you had to endure, and I hope you're catching up on your rest. Being too tired to sleep is the worst thing on earth and I get that way a lot during planting season. My dad, having Alzheimer's, hit the acceptance stage early, probably when he was in his early to mid 70s (he lived to be 85). He knew what the AD would do to him as it progressed because it ran through his family like wildfire (one reason we kids are so glad we were adopted and didn't have his family's genetics) and, since he was one of the youngest of 9 kids, he'd witnessed it killing many of his older brothers and sisters. While he was very early in his Alzheimer's Disease, he and my mom did all the right things with DNRs, medical power of attorney given to my oldest sibling with me as the backup if anything happened to him, making their wishes very clear and in writing, etc. I don't think my mom reached acceptance until the last couple of years of her life, and my dad has been gone since 2004. When Daddy was put into hospice care in the last week of his life, then my mom freaked out and wanted to rescind his DNR and medical power of attorney (thankfully she could not reverse his earlier decisions that way because he had suffered long enough). So, from watching her I think I have learned the importance of accepting the inevitable and of knowing when to fight and when to let go. At least I hope I have. I'd never try to prolong the life of a loved one needlessly if they were terminally ill and the quality of their life was extremely poor---I think we do too much of that in this life as it is. I hold my grandmother in my heart, soul and mind as an example of a strong woman who did everything in her power to stay healthy and live a long life but who also was ready to go when the time came. Nancy, Our gardens teach us so much if only we listen to them. My garden has taught me that there's nothing on this earth that grows and invades as relentlessly as bermuda grass. lol. Digging it out and staying on top of it is all that has worked for me. I'm glad you're going 'home' to visit your mom even though I know it also is hard to be away from everything/everyone here for a prolonged period as well. Tim's mom had an atypical case of Lou Gherig's Disease that did not present with the typical symptons and which was, therefore, not diagosed during the three or so years that her health was in a steep decline. Tim's sister, who worked in a field related to the medical industry, was taking her mom to one specialist after another seeing answers, treament and a diagnosis and, quite honestly, wasn't getting anything helpful from them. At one point I remember telling Tim "I think it is Lou Gehrig's Disease" (we were driving someone and I was reading a newspaper article about someone else who had LGD with the same nontypical symptoms as his mom's) and none of them could see it like I could, so my amateur diagnosis was ignored. I think that was because they were so close to their own mother emotionally that they couldn't objectively consider that LGD might be what it was since she did not have the usual symptoms. So, anyhow, when a doctor finally diagnosed her and put her in the hospital, his sisters told him her time was going to be short and that he should fly up and spend time with her while he could. They were talking in terms of months, not days or weeks at that point. He immediately booked a flight for the following week and made arrangements to take time off from work. He was going to fly up on the following Wednesday. He even figured he'd try to go up there for a week here and there over the next few months. The doctors thought she'd last at least another few months but instead she died the night before Tim was scheduled to fly. It was heart-wrenching. He, of course, would have flow up immediately if anyone had said she might not last another week. For all that medical science knows and can do, we still just never know when somebody's time will come. Of all 4 of our parents, my mom was the one who didn't care about trying to be healthy---she didn't eat properly, didn't exercise, etc. My dad and Tim's parents all tried really hard to eat healthy, stay active, etc. So, I guess in one way it is ironic that she outlived them all by well over a decade, but she was a decade younger than them so that may have played a role in it as well. vala, I love cruising. cruised Alaska, done the Panama canal, spent a month on the Hawaiian islands, did a Mediterranean/Greek Isle cruise. African safari, Mainland China. Done the Caribbean lots. Scotland/Ireland.

This was an offer by a friend, to a friend, and it sounds like it would be fun. And will be interested to see what the nephew has to offer.

vala, I KNOW you are an experienced traveler, and thank you.

I do go where I want to go and get excited over each and every trip. I do my planning, know what I want to see, and what I don't. So I think I am somewhat experienced.

There is an upcoming trip with the local zoo, which I have gone on a safari with and it is up and coming to Tanzania, on an elephant watch with an extended trip to see the gorillas of rwanda. Have a meeting planned soon to see the trip highlights. Am 71, so the mountains and I might not work together :o)

Have wanted for many years to do the Amazon with International Expeditions which is based close to where I live.

I am adventuresome :o)

I have never been on a "cruise". When younger and my parents were trying to decide where to live...we traveled by ship between here, Canada, and Brittan. 3-4 times! At that time I really did NOT enjoy it...but now 30-40 yrs later I am thinking I might like to go on a cruise...but have no idea to where or even how to proceed to look into it etc. Now we probably don't have the money to do it anyway haha! Life sure has a funny way of getting back at ya.

I admire your sense of adventure, Glenda. I'm rather a homebody and a scardey-cat to boot--wish I could shake some of that off and try something exciting once in awhile! Well, after the kids are out of school maybe.

Since it will be long, do you have ways of amusing yourself and relaxing, like reading or knitting? You won't be sightseeing all the time.

Please don't take this as spam, it is a personal recommendation.

This company is very good because they are excited about every trip they plan. It is not just a job for them, they genuinely love what they do. They are a little more expensive than the competition in our city but it is for extra nice accommodations. If you go to a large city anywhere, they have a step on guide to show you the sights of the city and give you the history. On a ship one of them is in the atrium coffee shop 95% of the time to answer question during the cruise. I don't know where you live but if you want to go with them, they arrange your flights and you meet them at the international airport. If you live far away you could not do the bus tours which are great also. I quit because I don't care for cruises and I can't do the long bus tours anymore. Getting on and off the tour bus so many times during the day is to hard on this old body. I would like to go on their Tahiti/Hawaii cruise early next year. You fly to Tahiti, spend 2 nights there I believe and start cruising. You will find it on their sight.

My DH and I did a 10 day Tahiti cruise and absolutely LOVED it. Our ship left the island of Tahiti and went to Moorea, Bora Bora and two more islands in 10 days. Perfect mix of sea days and land excursions. Prettiest water I've ever seen....and I've seen some pretty, pretty water...Norwegian fjords, Alaska 2x, Hawaii 10X, New Zealand, etc. Why is Tahiti NOT on your eventual "to do" list, Glenda?

I think 6 weeks would be too long for me, but you have been on many cruises, Glenda and you probably know that you would enjoy being out that long. I say go and have a ball!!!
