Room-a-day Thursday is Guest room or Childs room

Sorry I'm so slow today. It has been a busy day for us -- and so far we have accomplished NOTHING! But we earned $3.30 today. LOL Another story!

Today we will do pictures of "That other bedroom." At our house it is the guest room/ sewing room/ toy room and other junk. No it is not a big room. In fact it is small enough that I will only post one picture.

No guest bedroom here. Technically the house has 2 spare bedrooms but we use them as a computer room each. Both have pull out sofas so they are used as "bedrooms" when we have company.

Technically our house is a 3 bedroom house. The master bedroom is WAY smaller than our last, and won't hold two queen sized beds. This is why we sleep in separate rooms now.

However, the "master bedroom" is now our exercise room. We will put an inflatable mattress here, when/if we have guests.

Okay, I moved the bed last night, and I don't think it will work in this set-up. I think it just looks odd with the half-wall beside it. Also, there is not enough room on the sides for a nightstand, and the bookshelf next to the window. I had planned on doing matching built in bookshelves flanking the window wall. Finally, it pretty much necessitates that my kid gets in and out of the bed at the foot of it, which is annoying when making it. Here is the bed turned into the alcove. I'm going to put the bed along this wall now (turned out, not flush against the wall. Maybe I can move it back enough to where you don't have to sidestep it too much when you walk in. One more perspective of the room: These photos were taken at night, so the lighting is a bit off. But they are perhaps a bit more clear. I'm going to move it against the wall where the crib was next and see how that looks. And thank you all for talking me down from the navy walls. I think you are right that it will be too dark in there. So now I'm going to go for a more taupe or light tan color, I believe. Any color suggestions?

Well, that's not our problem, for sure. Our Florida vacation guest room has an unfortunate limitation that prevents virtually all abuse -- it's just over 7' deep by 7' wide, with a pocket door, 2 small closets separated by built-in drawers to the right of the door and a single bed to the left, window straight ahead with a little side table below it. For obvious reasons it's used by easy-going singles who aren't claustrophobic, but it's nice and comfy and works very well. Notably (aside from a second single bed, writing table, and reading chair of course), it holds almost everything that article recommends. Extra pillows and blankets of varying softnesses and thicknesses, bath linens, small space heater, fan, are all ready in closets that are otherwise empty for guest use. An adjustable reading light is mounted on a wall so the little side table remains clear, and decor is simple and serene. The drawers are topped by a mirror, and their top holds a couple of welcoming things, including chargers plugged in and ready in a basket. Most of the other useful items mentioned in the article, including toiletries and meds, are waiting in the drawer(s). No TV so far, though I would like to add one, and flowers stay outside, but otherwise... Once the business of switching out the weird jello-wobbly bed that came with the place for a good one with soft, smooth linens was attended to, the rest of the comfort was/is easy and inexpensive.

I'm with those who've suggested creating a dual-purpose room. It sounds like you would use the crafting/project space, so why not set up half the room (or at least a corner) with a work space for yourself, and find some (gently used) fitness equipment your husband wants? Then you could see how you end up using the room before devoting more space than necessary to one purpose or the other. When I'm ready for another area to have to clean and maintain (which won't be for at least a couple of years), we'll finish our basement. We have the floor plan roughly worked out, and one room will be a combined fitness and project room. Right now the fitness stuff is set up in a corner of the unfinished basement and only sees use on the coldest mornings of the year, or occasionally when the kids are playing down there and it's too hot to run outside. I'm not sure it will get much more use even when finished as I'd much rather be outside moving around, but it's nice to have during periods of extreme weather. My sewing machine is now in a corner of our bedroom that's not ideal, but better than having it shut up somewhere. Projects end up all over the house, spread out in the living room or dining room. There's a kids craft table spackled and ready to be sanded sitting in the middle of the living room as I type. I know I would use a project space if I had a designated one, but the thought of having to clean (and decorate!) the basement when I'm still working on the main floors is too much for me at the moment.

This will be my sewing room once we're finished with the trim and get everything unpacked.

When I have guests that don't want to sleep in the spare room in the basement, we'll move the twin bed into here.

This is how it will be furnished when in "company mode." This photo was taken on base. I used the same paint color in the new sewing room. The linens and lamp can still be used.

And this will be the welcoming committee. If you don't shut the door tightly, he'll also be your sleeping partner.

I'm like Casey. Both spare rooms here are set up as sitting rooms or computer rooms. Both have sofa beds for overnight guests. In a small house you need to use every inch of space!
This is my sitting room upstairs. I go there to read and enjoy the quiet or to just listen to music.

This is the den/computer room downstairs. Where I am now! :)

Moni, DH bought those for me. He got them Pier 1. They are made specifically for hanging on tab curtains. They are beaded and have a closure like a necklace.

Whoops! I was away all day yesterday, so I missed this one. My sister and DH's sister each come a couple times a year and spend 1 to 2 weeks with us. So the guest room was fixed up so that they could get away from us if they need or want to read or watch tv of their own choices.

Our the contents of our "guest room" (AKA daughter's bedroom before she went out on her own) is currently up for sale...a nice Ethan Allen bedroom set that I've posted on Craig's List. It was built in 1979 and still in great condition.
