Update on friend who was stung by a bee...

I thought I just posted this but I don't see it...????

Anyway...I just got an email...

He is still in coma...it has been nearly a month now.

Things don't look good.

Dr.s say he may recover and be like a 2 year old.

Many prayers need for him, and family

Also there was a man in our area a couple days ago was stung by a few bees and died.

I wonder if there is a way to find out if you are alergic BEFORE getting stung....???

My neighbors son was stung by a hundreds of bees when he was about 5. The bees were in a car stored in their driveway. Their son opened the door to play in the car and they swarmed over him. He became unconscious and was hospitalized but pulled through. That was quite a few years ago. He's 20 now. I'll be praying for a full recovery for this young one.

Squeeze: Some new information has come to light. Ever since your post, I've been perplexed. I knew my father, who was honest to a fault (and who I never heard tell a story that wasn't true), could not possibly have been mistaken. He was born (in a farmhouse) on a working family farm in Virginia, in 1906. He knew more about the outdoors than anyone I've ever seen, and definitely knew Yellowjackets from Honeybees. In fact, he taught me how to find (wild)Honeybee nests in the woods, and extract the honey. I have little problem doing it to this day (even with the scarcity of wild Honeybees). When I was a child, on the farm, and noticed a bunch of dug-up Yellowjacket combs, he explained to me what they were, and that was when he told me he had eaten their honey. Fast forward to today: I e-mailed a beekeeper friend of mine in Virginia, who I thought may know if Yellowjackets make honey. He told me they DO make honey and store it in combs. He said when he was a child (he's 70) his father designated he and his brothers to rid the yard of Yellowjacket nests in late Spring and early Summer, so his mother and sisters did not inadvertently get stung. He told me he's dug up hundreds in his youth, and found honeycombs in many of them. He told me to ask J.D.--who would surely verify this fact, as he used to charge people $1.00 to dig up Yellowjacket nests they had found, or $1.50 if he came and searched their yards and dug them up (many years ago; J.D. just turned 87 years old). J.D. has no phone (doesn't trust them), and believes a computer is akin to a spaceship; but I will see him later in the week when I go to the country. Of course, as you mentioned, Yellowjackets do not winter over in their hives. It was only I who assumed that, after being told by my father that they made honey--I figured it was for the Winter. I NOW believe they make honey to consume during the warm season, while they are active. It makes sense to me that since they feed on nectar, why not store some?? Another interesting fact, discovered with a search. Adults feed primarily on foods rich in sugars and carbohydrates (fruits, flower nectar, and tree saps). The insects, meat and fish they bring to the nest (hive) is fed to the larvae, and the larvae, in turn, secrete a sugar-like material that the adults dearly love. This exchange is called trophallaxis. Could it be that this sugar-like material is stored, and IT is the honey?? I do not report this to diminish your information--that they don't make honey--but I assume you believe that from reading available material. Is there anyone reading this post who has PERSONALLY dug up, for instance, 25 or 30 Yellowjacket nests and can definitely state that they found NO honeycombs? I've mostly seen combs already dug up by animals--and empty. But I BELIEVE I've noticed two distinct sizes of combs. I generally, after destroying a hive, just let it be--as it usually was a burn-out. Now, I'm determined to dig up a number of Yellowjacket nests, to see for myself--and talk to J.D. Hopefully, I can start with the one I poured Alcohol in (but I fear I'll have to dig up a large Azalea to get at it). Maybe there needs to be an addendum to the literature.

lunamoon, no sweat, I have been there, and it is NO FUN. my first child was 3 mo. old when he got sick, and he did not get better til he was 8 mo. old, I was going from doctor to doctor, first one said it was pnemonia (sp) second one said he had RSV, FINALLY a doctor asked me if we had any cats in the house, yeah a long haired tortise shell siamese mix and a persian mix, had to give my cats away and about a month later when I was hopping mad at the doc for mis diagnosing him again and making me get rid of my pets, he got better! All the dander had to be removed from the house as well, and duh I didn't think about that! He now has no allergies to cats, he out grew it, but he was one sick baby for a long time! michelle

The last time I was stung was on my wedding day. We had the whole event outside. During the reception, a bee got stuck in the lace on the sleeve of my dress and stung my arm. I remember it hurting and letting out a little scream, but I can't remember who did what to take care of it. I didn't have a bad reaction, though, so someone must have done something. Couple summers ago DH and the kids were working outside and stirred up some bees. They all received at least one sting. They were near the back door and all came running inside, which brought in dozens of bees with them! So DS#4, who was a toddler and in the house, got a sting on his ear. DH was the worst, though, he had dozens of bees stuck in his clothes. He literally ripped his shirt off and threw it outside. I was just mad at him for coming in the house! That was dumb! LOL. We found bees everywhere n the house for days! I didn't get stung. The rest of them had some swelling, but healed quick. For a long time after that, when DS#4 saw a bee he would panic and run for help with his ears covered. I know I'm a mean mom, but it struck me as cute and funny every time! ;o) That b/c that's where it stung him, that was his instinct after that- protect the ears!

These were killer bees. No one wants to adopt them. They are extremely dangerous to be around. They will attack and chase you for a quarter of a mile. What happens, the killer bees cross with regular honey bees, and the only way to tell them apart is microscopically. They are extremely aggressive and dangerous not only to people, but animals as well. I am sure any bee keeper in this area would want to eradicate them because they don't want them taking over their hives. They do produce honey...and that is how they managed to spread. An experiment in Brazil (in 1956, I think) went wrong and they escaped. They were trying to produce a better honey bee by crossing them with African bees. Over the years they have migrated up from South America into the southern states. I am sure people everywhere would want to stop them before they infect hives and continue to spread further.

I suppose the only way to know, would be to go an allergist to be tested. Most people don't do that. Maybe because of the severity of the response, that could be part of a physical exam.

pulls through without any long lasting problems.
My DS is allergic to Bee stings but not to the same extent
as your friend.

I am highly allergic to bee and wasp stings. When I am stung I immediately take 2 Benadryls and head to the hospital. I never go anywhere without my Benadryls. Advise to anyone who doesn't know..if you are stung take Benadryl it won't hurt you if you aren't allergeric (just sleepy) but may save your life if you are.

Sorry to hear about this, our granddaughter is allergic and so is our little shih-tzu dog. About lost her ( the dog )this summer but i happened to see the bee get her and i watched her for a few minutes and saw she was in trouble. I gave her a pretty big dose of benadryl and headed for the vet. She said, giving her the benadryl was the only thing that saved her, she was in pretty bad shape when we got her there. Praying your friend recovers.

This makes me want to have Benedryl on hand at all times! I don't know if any of my kids are alergic or not, but I'd feel better giving them a dose if they ever got stung. After Austin's infection and hospital stay I never want to see any of them go through that. I hope your friend recovers well....that's scary.

I agree, I need to remember to keep Benedryl on hand at all times. I have a preschool student who is highly allergic to bee stings and that is what's in his back pack every day (Benedryl). Two of my own children (now teens) have never been stung by a bee so I have no idea if they are allergic.

My doctor told me to always have Benadryl on hand. One night I woke up with my tongue swollen and I couldn't breathe. I was tested for allergies but they couldn't figure what caused it.

you can have the allergy testing done.I found out that I was allergic after I sat on one.I was about 13 and went swimming at my friends house and sat on porch to dry off, when I felt a pinch and then it all happened very fast.My friends dad kept asking me if I was okay and all I could do was shake my head no.They called my mom and told her to meet us at the driveway that we were going to the ER.I had sat on it and when I stood up it was still stuck to my butt.The Er Dr.said that it was an allergic reaction and they gave me a big ole shot right in the bottom and some benadryl.Ever since then I have always carried my eppi pen with me and some benadryl also.

For those who baby sit. DO NOT give a child any medication, including tylenol, with out having an emergency medical form giving permission from a dr! You can get into BIG trouble if the child is allergic to the medication. I understand why you want to do so, and I have it here for Damien. I just want to make you aware that you could have a big problem on your hands if you do it. Call for permission in an emergency.

My hubby got stung in the leg over the weekend,his leg is swollen,hes allergic,it hurts pretty bad really swells.
