This year's autumn wreath for the garden gate

Went to an Herb Fair yesterday and came home with some really pretty dried yarrow to add to it. Made it much more bright and colorful.

Meghan From my experience it's a toss up. I've had more bad luck with them than good. I do have a couple of bushes that I bought years ago that are still flourishing. For the most part I have given up on grafted roses because for me they grow beautifuly for 3 or 4 years and then they just go down hill after that and start throwing up Doctor Huey sprouts. I have some beautiful Dr Huey specimens that I gave up on trying to dig out and decided to go with the flow with it. Trained properly they are quite beautiful!! LOL!! There are only so many Dr Huey that a person can live with. I now only buy own root roses. Maybe it's just me!! LOL!!

Thanks all. Yes, those are hips from the rose, "Windrush". They are actually a pretty shade of orange but showed up yellow in the photo. Others are Hydrangea, Golden Rod, Virginia Creeper, a bit of Black Eyed Susan and Queen Anne's Lace. Tied together in the middle by raffia. And it would have been nice if I'd cleaned the bird poop off the gate before I took the photo! grrr.

Lovely autumn wreath. The dried yarrow does add some pizzazz. When you post your wreath photos I think about adding a gate (and a bit of fence) just so I can have a garden gate wreath.

Thank you everyone. dalmadarling, I just gathered bouquets of Hyradangea and Golden Rod keeping stems long, arranged them into the shape of a bow tie with equal amounts or lengths on both sides (as much as possible) tied them in the middle with some raffia. Then with the rest of the things I gathered, Queen Anne's Lace, Virginia Creeper, Black Eyed Susan and rose hips, I began sticking those in here and there under the knot of raffia and using loose strands of the raffia to tie and anchor them in more tightly when needed, until I liked what I saw. Then trimmed stems here and there so they didn't hang beyond or down too far. For the hanger, I just happened to have a piece of rusted barbed wire that used to be on a birdhouse. I attached that to the back of the raffia knot by using wire threaded through the knot and wound around the ends of the barbed wire.

My Mum used to grow Yarrow.....she told me that its a herb but I wouldnt know what dishes to use it with! Its very colourful though.

Yes, that is very pretty! You can dye Yarrow blooms any color you like, with floral spray paint. They are especially pretty sprayed with gold or silver floral paint.

Thanks everyone. kay, I wondered how the couple selling the yarrow achieved the colors they had. I thought perhaps they died them somehow, never heard of floral spray paint. There were some beautiful shades of blue too.

Very pretty, Schoolhouse.

Karenmay, yarrow is an herb but not a culinary herb. A lot of herbs were medicinal and some like yarrow were often used in other ways. Some, as insect repellants etc. I should know what yarrow was used for but my brain is on vacation a lot any more.

Floral spray paint is purchased from a florist supply house.

From Webmd.com:

Yarrow is an herb. The above ground parts are used to make medicine.

Yarrow is used for fever, common cold, hay fever, absence of menstruation, dysentery, diarrhea, loss of appetite, gastrointestinal (GI) tract discomfort, and to induce sweating.

Some people chew the fresh leaves to relieve toothache.

Yarrow is applied to the skin to stop bleeding from hemorrhoids; for wounds; and as a sitz bath for painful, lower pelvic, cramp-like conditions in women.

In combination with other herbs, yarrow is used for bloating, intestinal gas (flatulence), mild gastrointestinal (GI) cramping, and other GI complaints.

In foods, the young leaves and flowers of yarrow are used in salads.

In manufacturing, yarrow is also used as a cosmetic cleanser and in snuff. Yarrow oil is used in shampoos.

How does it work?
Yarrow contains many chemicals that might affect blood pressure and possibly have anti-inflammatory effects.
