Now I know why I don't use my Mandoline!

I decided to give my little-used mandolin a shot, dicing the carrots and onions for my cabbage soup.

Geesh! How frustrating it was for me. By the time I figured to cut the carrots into chunks to fit the handle and slicer, then it julienned instead of diced. So I took all the julienne slices and sliced them into chunks.

What a major PIA. I might as well have just done it all with the knife to begin with! It looks so easy to see chefs or the hawkers at home shows use this thing, so it must be me.

For this reason, I don't have a Slap Chop.

You have to cut the veggie to fit the chopper anyway, so you might as well keep chopping.

Ooh - jasdip. I'm relieved! I thought you were going to say you cut your finger (and even post a pic - yuck!). I'm glad that all of your digits are intact and I agree that I'd just as soon use a knife as a mandoline.

Suzieque and I thought the same thing. I'm glad your fingers are all intact. I only use mine for thin slices, ususly for cuke and onions in sour cream. I wonder if anyone remembers the Moulie (sp?) It was a slicer from back in the 50's.

When Minnie Hill Palmer passed, The Acre was deeded to the city and fell under control of 'Parks and Wreck'. The Chatsworth Historical Society was formed to save The Pioneer Church and finally came to support The Acre. Candy and Dean Craig resurrected the gardens and added many OGRs through their friendship and connection with John MacGregor, Clair Martin's predecessor at The Huntington Library. They were rose garden volunteers there and it was they who introduced me to the place and got me started there. Candy also had a friendship with Peter Schneider, the editor of The American Rose Rambler, a marvelous rose newsletter, and now the editor of The Combined Rose List, which he generated with Bev Dobson (who originated it) and whom he succeeded. The Craigs lost a daughter to a drunk driver and Peter named an apricot floribunda he created for their daughter, Eden Ellen. There was a bed of it growing there for many years. They surrounded the house with roses, making it a popular venue for weddings and other parties, arranged through "Parks and Wreck". With tightening belts and the aging of the Historical Society and surrounding rose societies which often used the gardens to hold their pruning demonstrations, it appears roses (not all, but from the photos, many) have been removed (or, perhaps died) to reduce maintenance and probably to increase room for events. Candy held an annual Rose Festival in conjunction with Pioneer Days, a community festival, for many years where she sold old, rare and unusual roses to help pay for the potting soil and other supplies required to maintain the gardens. Many of them were passed through her by Peter from his imports and were the source of things such as Julia's Rose, Greensleeves and quite a few other unusual European roses not in US commerce at the time. A number were propagated from the OGRs existing on the property when they came to be the volunteer caretakers and many more came from The Huntington and my old Newhall garden. There are still some roses there, I'm not sure which though. It's suggested to start plants out in pots which best fit their root ball size so the roots fill the pots and knit a solid root ball. Starting a band out in a five gallon can will frequently lead to weakened root ball between the crown of the plant and the pot edges due to the long length of roots between the center and edges. Removing the root ball from the pot could then permit loosening or even damage to the roots at their weakest point, between the crown and edge of the mass. Starting a small plant in a gallon until the roots fill the pot wall surfaces shortens that distance, creating a more solid root mass. Increasing that from a gallon to a two or three and permitting it to then fill out the increased mass results in a more solid soil/root ball which is less likely to fall apart or otherwise be damaged by removal or handling. The organics in the soil break down, digest, over time, leaving only the inorganic material (sand, clay, stone, etc.). Eventually, all potted plants require replanting to replenish and refresh the soil in the container. A looser, weaker root ball is more easily damaged than a tighter solid mass, so the plant will experience less damage and shock from the root ball falling apart. If you're trying to protect smaller pots from heat and cold extremes, it's far easier to protect multiples than one. They can be grouped together so each helps shade and insulate the next. (another logical "excuse" for larger pot ghettos!) If your goal is to keep the plant potted until it's matured sufficiently for planting, this would be the more secure method of accomplishing it. If you intend to keep it potted, it still may be safer to start with a smaller size them transplant into the desired size to stack the deck in your favor for safer repotting when the time comes. You may be able to safely accomplish transplanting after starting the smaller plant in a larger pot, but the chances of the soil ball breaking up are greater. Hi Plllog! "That is, I know it's possible, but might not be in your budget." See, there's the crux of it. This little beverage center idea of mine was not in the original budget. (Nor, alas, were new drywall in the livingroom and halls, the gorgeous walnut top on my used cabinet island, the matching gorgeous top that will soon be on the new media cabinet and the near full gut of the bathroom.) And we're still determined to get through remodeling our ugly duckling without taking out a loan or dipping into savings. Conventional wisdom says: Wait until the coffers are full again but that's so hard to do. First off, I'm a cheapskate. Even if the goose who laid the golden egg waddled up onto my deck and built a nest, I'm not sure I would willingly pay someone to mess up the walls I just paid to fix. Second, I'm not quite cheap enough. My new kitchen is starting to look pretty good but, gosh, it would look so much better if the microwave and coffee maker didn't take up so much room on that one counter. I'm willing to spend a little bit more to change that, especially since I'm going to have a piece of countertop leftover that should be just the right size. Still, it's nice to know that it's possible. Maybe when the coffers ARE full again I'll put a tile counter outside on my deck to shade the golden goose should she happen to wander by ;) Thanks for your help!

I didn't mean that she is pining away for him, but you said, "My husband was fooling around with the mother of his other child for years on top of everything to start off. I stayed with my husband because I believe in love and 2nd chances." & I thought you are saying that he was fooling around with the mother of this 8 year old & if he was doing that while he was seeing you, then yes this child saw his parents 'together' at least in some way, unless they were so sly that they hid it from their own child. And even if the mother hates him & is not sad, that does not mean she does not let her son know how angry she is (anger is also a feeling that is much easier to express than hurt, so who knows if she truly hates him or is hurt he finally ended it with her and married you) but I'm sure the child picks up on those feelings because children are little sponges & know more than most people give them credit for. If mommy is angry all the time at daddy, of course it's going to affect how he feels about daddy's house & the new wife, baby, etc. "I think that it's good to be proactive and encourage my stepson to be nice to my son. I don't try to force it upon him. To me to encourage him to love his brother should be a good thing. I agree that yes he is eight and may be frustrated which is understandable. I just don't think that it should be ok that he takes it out on my 2 year old son. If their our any mothers out there you know how you are protective over your children no matter who it might be. If it was my neice , my friend son. I would not stand them to be nasty to my children." If you want to protect your 2 year old, then never allow the 8 year old to be alone with him. It's THAT simple. If dad refuses to acknowledge the problem, then it rests with YOU to protect the baby & make sure he's always in your sight when big brother is around. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be a happy little family, but if he (the 8 year old) does not want that, it is going to backfire to force it. I believe he does know right from wrong & he has anger, resentment issues... maybe from how his mother expresses, directly or inadvertently. He is manipulative if he changes face when dad comes around the corner & I agree with Sylvia that is a dangerous child that does that. (reminiscent of "the good son") Lovehadley has a great point that leaving is probably not the best idea since the child only comes over every other weekend and leaving could place the younger child in jeopardy when he would visit. The bottom line is that unless mom & dad are willing to work together to find out why their son is so aggressive & deal with it, then the only solution is to never allow your baby to alone with him. Yes, he was part of the package as you & your kids were part of a package, but YOU and your DH accepted each other's package... the kids don't get a choice. He didn't choose the package so how can you expect him to accept you as you've accepted him. You are the adult.

Are you sure it is dying and not just losing leaves? Does your definition of "chemicals" include fertilizers? Where have you been keeping it, inheriting sounds like container, is it indoors or outdoors? etc.

I too thought you had cut yourself. Glad all is well!

I love using my mandoline when I have alot of slicing to do, but it can be a dangerous situation if you aren't paying attention. I made that mistake once (actually twice) :(

My son bought me the slap chop and I've only used it once. Just as you said, you have to chop the veggies to fit the dang thing, so might as well keep chopping yourself.

I sold mine in a garage sale. The thing scared me to death. The blades were like razor blades. I had a little "finger saver" thing you could stick in things like potatoes, but it didn't work for old "lefty" here.

I had one and gave it to a friend who actually cooks. I know very few people that do cook very often. I have a food processor that's probably 25 years old and it is a dandy. Will do everything I need done. I've grated a lot of cheese w/ it and prepared a lot of cabbage for slaw. It's so old it's heavy. Works like a charm!!

Yes, I have a Muoli Grater i use for cheese. Have had it since the 70's. Much easier than a box grater. My kids used to love turning the handle when we had spaghetti.

I have had mine about 10 years. I doubt more than a dozen times, have I not nicked my knuckles, when I used the darn thing. I am a slow learner I guess. It is in the garage now. LOL

I've owned and used one for the past ten years...love it especially for cutting potatoes when making scalloped potatoes.
EXCEPT I took the whole side of my ring finger and nail off about 2 months ago and have been fearful of using it since :(
I'd always been uber careful, but the potatoes are too round at first to use the guard and I'm too lazy to cut them in half. It happened so fast I really don't know how it did happen. Sheesh, it took a good month for it to heal and wore a finger guard round the clock so as not to bump it...cuz that hurt like all get out!

I thought you were going to say you grazed your knuckles too.

I love my mandolin. It is really old and doesn't have a holder to hold the food but I am careful. It belonged to my Grandfather and he used to use it to slice potatoes for his wonderful potato fritters. I have a plastic one with blades and a food holder too but I prefer to use the old one.

I don't have a mandolin but I love my chopper, use that all the time. You can make the beautiful layered salads in no time flat.

Those things scare the heck out of me! You can tell yourself to "be careful", but it only takes a split second. I've seen two people who almost took a finger off....I shudder just thinking about those things!

I actually like to take out my knives and cutting board and do my own chopping. It is a stress relief for me after a long day at the office. DH always insists that my knives are properly sharpened, so it never takes me as long as I think it might.

(So glad you did not cut yourself! I also thought that was the topic of the thread!)

I thought about the musical instrument first, then figured you'd cut yourself. Glad it's not that.

I love my mandoline, but you do have to be very careful.

Now I know why I don't use my Mandoline!
