Now I know why I don't use my Mandoline!

I decided to give my little-used mandolin a shot, dicing the carrots and onions for my cabbage soup.

Geesh! How frustrating it was for me. By the time I figured to cut the carrots into chunks to fit the handle and slicer, then it julienned instead of diced. So I took all the julienne slices and sliced them into chunks.

What a major PIA. I might as well have just done it all with the knife to begin with! It looks so easy to see chefs or the hawkers at home shows use this thing, so it must be me.

For this reason, I don't have a Slap Chop.

You have to cut the veggie to fit the chopper anyway, so you might as well keep chopping.

Ooh - jasdip. I'm relieved! I thought you were going to say you cut your finger (and even post a pic - yuck!). I'm glad that all of your digits are intact and I agree that I'd just as soon use a knife as a mandoline.

Suzieque and I thought the same thing. I'm glad your fingers are all intact. I only use mine for thin slices, ususly for cuke and onions in sour cream. I wonder if anyone remembers the Moulie (sp?) It was a slicer from back in the 50's.

Piddy, first being rescues who knows what occured or stress events prior. Some info. Salt ok for goldfish (well I raised them outdoors and inside as kid and used a pinch per Dr Innes) (I realize there are differing opinions on this so not judging one way or another) Unless you used huge amounts this mho had nothing to do with their deaths. (although I think I read somewhere it can exacerbate ammonia poisoning? BUT not sure if memory serves)(or was that help in nitrate nitrite poisoning) the old rule one inch per gallon (I read this and makes mucho sense) is ok for small flatish fish, but larger fish body mass needs to be considered. Ie a huge paccu for example might be 10 inches long well - the rule would provide a way inadequate tank size for such a fish. So need to go by mass. My first thought was too small a tank for four fish.. Just too much waste with goldfish so more tank for fewer fish. I said one in five gallon. That said they were relatively small, you had a filter, so that doesn't make sense to me, unless the water wasn't cycled, and fish waste (they are major waste producers) Had the tank been cycled? Ammonia spike that may have been missed? did you check ammonia? If you are changing water, is this such and amount (was filter new, ie no stuff, gravel or filter material with bacteria in it) that you cause recycling again. I have done much recent research on gourami disease and found also information on viral crossing with goldfish to gourami and other fishes now.. Almost epidemic overseas, an hidden... so could be something not to do with you at all. but, again, ammonia and too many fish in too small a space. Not re size but waste, esp if not cycled. How many water changes if not cycled - would need one a day. That said, I know when young some who had fish in bowls and they hung on for weeks and months sometimes longer as person changed water (ps was not me!) so maybe they were not well to begin with.. You as you say, have experience... sometimes in old innes book, he would say use water from pond or established tank, feed live worms, so on, salt water cure... to bring them about. Any other symptoms, spots, diseases that you notice. or just run down and die? Best Sherry How was their breathing. Gill coloration? Any obvious symptoms. Sometimes when I buy new fish, and am quaranteening one just quitely dies, just lays down and floats off. (I seperate and give low light planted tank for their ease) I figure they often have survived a nasty trip, horrible conditions at pet store (low ph, hose to fill tanks, guys often don't check temp, cooked some fish once, so on) so they just can't take it. poor things so maybe not knowing what they had been through prior, and even with your care in transportation, and new home they were just tired from stress and went over edge. (I make really long all day sometimes more water changes, dribble method (my petstore has extremely low ph 5, so go slow one degree in 24 hours is max per day. ) was the transfer to much a shock from where they were prior?

Hi Plllog! "That is, I know it's possible, but might not be in your budget." See, there's the crux of it. This little beverage center idea of mine was not in the original budget. (Nor, alas, were new drywall in the livingroom and halls, the gorgeous walnut top on my used cabinet island, the matching gorgeous top that will soon be on the new media cabinet and the near full gut of the bathroom.) And we're still determined to get through remodeling our ugly duckling without taking out a loan or dipping into savings. Conventional wisdom says: Wait until the coffers are full again but that's so hard to do. First off, I'm a cheapskate. Even if the goose who laid the golden egg waddled up onto my deck and built a nest, I'm not sure I would willingly pay someone to mess up the walls I just paid to fix. Second, I'm not quite cheap enough. My new kitchen is starting to look pretty good but, gosh, it would look so much better if the microwave and coffee maker didn't take up so much room on that one counter. I'm willing to spend a little bit more to change that, especially since I'm going to have a piece of countertop leftover that should be just the right size. Still, it's nice to know that it's possible. Maybe when the coffers ARE full again I'll put a tile counter outside on my deck to shade the golden goose should she happen to wander by ;) Thanks for your help!

I didn't mean that she is pining away for him, but you said, "My husband was fooling around with the mother of his other child for years on top of everything to start off. I stayed with my husband because I believe in love and 2nd chances." & I thought you are saying that he was fooling around with the mother of this 8 year old & if he was doing that while he was seeing you, then yes this child saw his parents 'together' at least in some way, unless they were so sly that they hid it from their own child. And even if the mother hates him & is not sad, that does not mean she does not let her son know how angry she is (anger is also a feeling that is much easier to express than hurt, so who knows if she truly hates him or is hurt he finally ended it with her and married you) but I'm sure the child picks up on those feelings because children are little sponges & know more than most people give them credit for. If mommy is angry all the time at daddy, of course it's going to affect how he feels about daddy's house & the new wife, baby, etc. "I think that it's good to be proactive and encourage my stepson to be nice to my son. I don't try to force it upon him. To me to encourage him to love his brother should be a good thing. I agree that yes he is eight and may be frustrated which is understandable. I just don't think that it should be ok that he takes it out on my 2 year old son. If their our any mothers out there you know how you are protective over your children no matter who it might be. If it was my neice , my friend son. I would not stand them to be nasty to my children." If you want to protect your 2 year old, then never allow the 8 year old to be alone with him. It's THAT simple. If dad refuses to acknowledge the problem, then it rests with YOU to protect the baby & make sure he's always in your sight when big brother is around. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be a happy little family, but if he (the 8 year old) does not want that, it is going to backfire to force it. I believe he does know right from wrong & he has anger, resentment issues... maybe from how his mother expresses, directly or inadvertently. He is manipulative if he changes face when dad comes around the corner & I agree with Sylvia that is a dangerous child that does that. (reminiscent of "the good son") Lovehadley has a great point that leaving is probably not the best idea since the child only comes over every other weekend and leaving could place the younger child in jeopardy when he would visit. The bottom line is that unless mom & dad are willing to work together to find out why their son is so aggressive & deal with it, then the only solution is to never allow your baby to alone with him. Yes, he was part of the package as you & your kids were part of a package, but YOU and your DH accepted each other's package... the kids don't get a choice. He didn't choose the package so how can you expect him to accept you as you've accepted him. You are the adult.

I'm thinking RA is more likely, though. I woke up with pain in my wrists this morning, and I learned that the weird taste I've had in my mouth on and off for weeks could be an RA symptom, too I never had any taste symptoms, only bouts of extreme pain and stiffness, accompanied by severe swelling. The swelling comes from the immune system attacking the joint. Never chills with a flare. RA flares are so painful, it overwhelms. My first flares were in the shoulder....family Dr said it was probably Bursitis. This went on for years. When I finally got a DR to order a test for RF, it came back at 2300. Any idiot can diagnose that one, and I finally got treatment. I had a bad flare while out of town...wrist swelled up so bad, ER first thought it was broken. In fact, had a flare a couple of months ago, and even though I said it was a flare...insisted on an Xray. Only thing that can calm a bad flare for me is a shot of Demerol, and these days they are years apart. Now, with RA, morning joint stiffness is normal. When I get up in the morning, I have to pull myself on my feet by holding onto bureau, and the first few steps are excruciating. And my RA is under control :)

I too thought you had cut yourself. Glad all is well!

I love using my mandoline when I have alot of slicing to do, but it can be a dangerous situation if you aren't paying attention. I made that mistake once (actually twice) :(

My son bought me the slap chop and I've only used it once. Just as you said, you have to chop the veggies to fit the dang thing, so might as well keep chopping yourself.

I sold mine in a garage sale. The thing scared me to death. The blades were like razor blades. I had a little "finger saver" thing you could stick in things like potatoes, but it didn't work for old "lefty" here.

I had one and gave it to a friend who actually cooks. I know very few people that do cook very often. I have a food processor that's probably 25 years old and it is a dandy. Will do everything I need done. I've grated a lot of cheese w/ it and prepared a lot of cabbage for slaw. It's so old it's heavy. Works like a charm!!

Yes, I have a Muoli Grater i use for cheese. Have had it since the 70's. Much easier than a box grater. My kids used to love turning the handle when we had spaghetti.

I have had mine about 10 years. I doubt more than a dozen times, have I not nicked my knuckles, when I used the darn thing. I am a slow learner I guess. It is in the garage now. LOL

I've owned and used one for the past ten years...love it especially for cutting potatoes when making scalloped potatoes.
EXCEPT I took the whole side of my ring finger and nail off about 2 months ago and have been fearful of using it since :(
I'd always been uber careful, but the potatoes are too round at first to use the guard and I'm too lazy to cut them in half. It happened so fast I really don't know how it did happen. Sheesh, it took a good month for it to heal and wore a finger guard round the clock so as not to bump it...cuz that hurt like all get out!

I thought you were going to say you grazed your knuckles too.

I love my mandolin. It is really old and doesn't have a holder to hold the food but I am careful. It belonged to my Grandfather and he used to use it to slice potatoes for his wonderful potato fritters. I have a plastic one with blades and a food holder too but I prefer to use the old one.

I don't have a mandolin but I love my chopper, use that all the time. You can make the beautiful layered salads in no time flat.

Those things scare the heck out of me! You can tell yourself to "be careful", but it only takes a split second. I've seen two people who almost took a finger off....I shudder just thinking about those things!

I actually like to take out my knives and cutting board and do my own chopping. It is a stress relief for me after a long day at the office. DH always insists that my knives are properly sharpened, so it never takes me as long as I think it might.

(So glad you did not cut yourself! I also thought that was the topic of the thread!)

I love my mandoline, but you do have to be very careful.
