bees! ants! exterminator?

Do some ant colonies have both large and smaller ants? When we raise one of our garage doors, both sizes spill out onto the cement floor from a corner, with the big ones spreading out like Samurai warriors. (NW corner of the garage.) I put ant bait out yesterday; too soon to see any effect.

This morning I found two dozen teeny ants coming into a lower kitchen cabinet from where the water pipes enter the house. (North-facing wall.) Sprayed. Maybe should put ant bait there?

Bees are coming in and out of a dime-sized hole in our foundation. (West side of the house.) Using wasp spray three times hasn't deterred these bees, and I don't want to imagine how many are IN the wall above the hole. (None in the basement.)

Is it our record-wet summer? It's still HOT -- have had the A/C on for days. We do have a big storm forecast for tonight.

I'm starting to think I need professional help. Any advice?

Do get professional help. You don't want to let the bee colony grow to such an extent that you have to tear down your walls.

I also vote for professional help. Especially for the bees. Are they really bees or are the hornets? If hornets they can sting over and over. They can be dangerous!

The closest to organic, if you want to treat the termites themselves, is a bait system installed by an exterminator. It uses fipronil, I think -- the same thing they use on cats and dogs, basically. But instead of spraying it everywhere, they surround the house with bait stations (basically a piece of wood in the ground). When termites start eating the bait, they add a cartridge of fipronil to the bait station, and the termites then carry the fipronil back to the nest, where it kills the whole nest. So it still uses chemicals, but in much reduced amounts. BUT it's expensive. In our area it's about $800 to install, and then you pay money every time they come out to check the baits. I'm not sure if there is a do-it-yourself version of this -- there should be, though; it doesn't sound difficult. But here's the thing about termites: they HAVE to return to the nest (in the ground) every 24 hours in order to live. Their bodies dry out otherwise, or something like that. So if you can interrupt the path of carbon-based materials (wood and the like) that they're taking to get to your kitchen, then the ones already in your wall will die of natural causes, and no new ones will be able to get in. Check your basement/crawlspace. Is there any wood linking the ground to your house? In our house the chimney had been framed in wood, and the termites were using that frame to get into the house. Also, termites won't go through thick plastic, so a vapor barrier might help if you have a crawlspace. In our house, after we removed all wood connecting the house with the ground, then covered our crawlspace with a plastic vapor barrier, the termite inspector basically told us that we probably wouldn't have any more termites. Of course, he wanted us to use his bait system anyway, and we probably will just in case. But we no longer feel like it needs to be done NOW; we'll wait until we save up the money. Oh, where are you? On the west coast, there are some companies that are using a borate (boric acid base) treatment to eliminate nests. VERY low toxicity for the environment, although breathing it in still isn't good for humans. We couldn't find any people who do that treatment where we are. Borate is big in Australia, too. We did find that our local companies had a borate treatment for wood (usually used to eliminate post beetles). They spray it on the wood underneath your house. When we asked them if it would help with the termites, they said that it would not eliminate the nest, but it would prevent the termites from eating the wood that was sprayed with it. Hope this helps. If you can do some work on it, you may be able to put off an expensive treatment until you have the money. Good luck...

Terro actually works pretty well for me. We used to get ants all over the place but we've got the Terro bait stations set up, and way fewer ants. The only weird thing is that in some of the bait stations, they looked to be trying to set up a colony or nest. One of the stations was totally clogged up with tiny pieces of brick and such, that they had carried in. I'd use the Terro, and line all entry locations with diatomaceous earth. Basically, it looks like white powder, but cuts them up when they walk over it. They then dehydrate and die. You can also arm yourself with a spray bottle filled with water and a bit of dishwashing liquid (like Dawn or such). Spray the ants you see, watch them die almost instantly, and wipe them away. Dead ants, and clean surface. Not something to do constantly, obviously, but satisfying when you happen to be around at the same time as the ants, and you happen to be holding said spray bottle. I actually think ants are neat, but not in my home. And definitely not in the quantities I used to see them before the Terro baits.

The problem is that the honey will absorb water and eventually ferment leaving a sticky mess that runs down inside the walls and ceiling. Also, the bees will begin to decay in a few more days and they will stink like... well like dead bees. The only alternative I could suggest would be to access the hives from the outside instead of from the inside. This is likely to be difficult given the location of the hives.

The first ants description sound like they are carpenter ants -- which you really don't want living in your house. The different sizes in the same colony, the defensive behavior, and not taking the bait all point in the direction of carpenter ants.

For the second ants the bait might work I'd do that and use caulk or something around the hole.

My guess on the "bees" is that they are yellowjackets, which are small, with bright yellow and black striped abdomens, and no sense of humor at all. In one house we lived in there was a yellowjacket nest just under the bottom board of the siding, right next to the back door.

If the door slammed, they'd come out angry. I bought a cheap can of wasp and hornet spray, and tried spraying them as they came out. The force of the spray would knock them to the ground, you could then continue spraying until one was in a puddle 3 inches across, it would walk to the edge of the puddle, shake off, and fly away. I returned the cheap spray for a refund, and bought a name brand can that worked much better. However after spraying the exit extensively they stopped using that exit, and instead would exit into the basement. Yay.

At a different house there was a nest of them in the ground, and solution I tried there was to set the snout of a shop vac next to the hole, turn it on, and leave.

I have seen news stories of huge honeycombs between the studs of a house. Some were so big that honey oozed through the walls. All had to be removed, and that meant ripping out to the studs. So do get professional help. if you want, you can call the kind of bee keeper who specializes in removal so that they can relocate the hive.

Yes, the different-sized ants in the garage are carpenter ants. He sprayed.

The 'bees' are indeed hornets, and dead and dying ones started appearing in the basement after I posted yesterday -- effects of our wasp spraying. The exterminator guesses they started their nest only six weeks ago. The adults will die from the spray he used, but we may see a few more hornets as larva mature. At least now we can vacuum up the corpses in the basement. The central vac cannister is only a few feet away.

I'll take care of the kitchen ants.

When I tried to call the exterminator yesterday...I had no dial tone on our land line. Guess where the phone box is! Yesss...on the basement wall beside the hornets! A coincidence?

After spending 30 minutes on hold with AT&T this morning, they say they will send a tech out...SATURDAY. Wow, service in five days! Isn't that wonderful? Now I *know* it's time to cancel the land line. The only incoming calls on it are robo-calls anyway.

I hope you will remember to warn the phone guy about the hornets! People do die from their stings if allergic to them.

The reason I waited to call for phone service was to be sure the exterminator would have come. When I called, I told the dispatcher about the hornets.

Amazingly, someone did come out this afternoon! It took her two hours to trace the difficulty -- not in our phone box, but in two further-distant 'boxes'. We've all been in the basement now without troubles. I have high hopes the nest is not going to re-establish.
