Remembering 9/11

With the anniversary of 9/11 today, I think we should all sit back for a moment and realize how blessed we are to have what we have. Thousands and thousands of people lost either their own lives or those of loved ones on that horrific day. Their lives were changed forever.

I didnt know anyone personally that was affected by the events of the day, but I did become connected with a family through a memorial quilt square I did honoring one of the victims. He was a young 20-something guy and I started talking with his family. They are wonderful people whom I keep in touch with to this day. The tragedy became so much more real when I became involved with this family because I heard their stories and had a glimpse of what they felt. So for them, today I think about their son, Gregg and every other person victim to 9/11 and what they left behind.

I hope they're all resting in peace.

I went out in the rain this morning and lowered our flag to half-staff.
I watched Flight 93 the other evening. It is still so unbelievable.

I agree with you, Stephanie. I'm WFH today and the tv programs are full of remembrances. One of the guys I 'work' with (long distance) lives in NYC and our office is just down the street from where the Twin Towers were. He's told me about that day, and the days following. What a nightmare.

Leslie, we also lowered our flag to half staff this morning.

Thank you for starting this thread. I've never felt so shaken and I was 1500 miles away here in Louisiana. My heart goes out today to everyone who was near the crashes and who knew someone personally whose life ended on this tragic day. I remember that after about 5 hours of being glued to the television, I just couldn't mentally couldn't take any more. I went to the barn and went out for a ride....life seemed so perfect and beautiful in my little corner of the world as I watched the cows and meandered around in the pastures of my neighbors. Then I realized that I was 10 miles north of one of the largest oil refineries in the world and 10 miles south of a nuclear power plant. Suddenly even my little corner of the world seemed very scary. Can you imagine people who live in countries where bombings occur on a regular basis? I was proud that my youngest played TAPS at his college this morning at a memorial service on their outdoor colonnade. I hope that future generations remember the lives lost ..... all individuals with hopes and dreams and families who loved them.... Grace

I can only relate my 9/11 feelings as we observe the 17th anniversary of that sorrowful day. Born and raised on the upper West Side of Manhattan, a long time ago, I only remember the neighborhood where the towers were attacked, years before they were built. It was a busy neighborhood primarily consisting of 80 + yr old red brick tenement buildings,..5 - 7 stories high, all with commercial stores on the ground level, facing the busy street out front. What made that area special to me and many other natives was that the sidewalks were teeming with tables displaying various wares ! In 1963 it was simply a carnival every day of shouting merchants and frenetic buyers !!! On that fateful day in 2001, I was a Florida Keys resident and recently retired ! I awoke at 8 AM, turned on the TV and less than an hour later was stunned by what I saw, as we all were ! This morning I got caught up again in the personalized stories on TV ! Then, after an hour or so, I had to shut the TV down and find something else to do. Have been there, have seen enough, and forced myself to think instead about the NY Jets great victory last night ! ( weak smile ) Will always have that sick feeling every 9/11 till forever ! I know a lot about the hate most Arabs have,..- lived and worked for 13 yrs in the oil fields of eastern Saudi Arabia until 1991 ! Heard the stories from friends still working there about the laughing, hilarious afternoon hubbly-bubbly sessions the older Arab's held after 9/11 !! They were all so thrilled ! No comment lest I get deleted ! After I moved here to Englewood in 2004, I drove up to Sharky's in Venice many times,..always driving past Venice Municipal Airport where Mohammed Atta and a few of his demented, hate filled Islamic brothers actually took flying lessons just prior to 9/11 !!! Most of the locals didn't want to discuss that episode, - especially after it was revealed the vile assassins said they only wanted instructions on how to fly those big jets once they were up high,..they had no interest in learning how to take-off or land ! I still mourn, not only for all the poor people inside the Twin Towers, but also all those FDNY, NYPD & other responders who immediately flew into that chaotic, polluted air scene so heroically ! One of my childhood buddies was an FDNY responder,..dying 12 yrs ago from lung cancer,..and he never smoked !

It's raining so I brought my flag inside.

The school had the kids wear red, white, and blue today. I've been trying to explain to my kids about what happened and why we are doing this. It's hard give more than a simple explaination. I wish I still had some of the pictures from that time so they could see and understand it better.

I join all of you in remembrance of that day. PLUS all the tragedies/losses of our military which has resulted from what happened that day. My heart/prayers go out to the families of each and every one of them.

A woman I work with had a newphew on flight 91 that hit the Pentagon. That little boy was with his classmates on their way to California. Had he lived he would most likely be a senior in high school now. As I listened this morning to the names being read in NYC my heart went out to all the people who lost their lives and their families. I also think of all the lives lost since that eventful day.

It is so sad to think of how that event changed our lives, both worldwide and especially here in the United States.

It changed so many peoples lives...my job took a nose dive and I feel like we're just now pulling out of the mess...It changed soooo many things in how I now do my job...It changed my nieces life forever and she's still so bitter and cannot get past it...I can't blame her...Her husband was a wonderful man and I often think how her life would be sooo different had he not been in the pentagon that day...Please keep her in your thoughts...cause she sooo needs help and while she does still attend grief sessions I'm not sure she'll ever get over it...this pic was taken in Jack's little town Memorial Day, 2002...They had a wonderful service and dedicated it to him...

Dh turned on the tv this morning to catch the weather and MSNBC was running the entire broadcast from the moment the first plane hit. We started watching it and just sat there in awe of what was happening. It is still unbelievable to watch and realize that so many people lost their lives.

Blessed Be to those who lost their lives and to the families and friends.

This has been on my mind today, including the after effects. My heart goes out to all concerned. I watched the broadcast in real time, in horror, while living/working in Scotland.
Unbelievable to this minute.

God bless all of those touched by this tragic event and all people putting their lives on the line to fight terrorism.

Canada supports the US with it's fight.
As a Canadian citizen I feel for my friends/family across the border - my heart continues to go out to you. I stand with you in your grief and with your fight.

Our phone rang early that morning. When I answered, I heard my husband's youngest brother say, "I just wanted to let you guys know I'm OK..." He's career Army, and was in the Pentagon. He was thrown across the room by the force of the impact. Battered and bruised, and royally ticked off, but he was lucky he wasn't really injured. Hubs and I stayed home from work, glued to the TV all day.

It's still so difficult to comprehend.

My heart goes out to everyone who lost someone that day.

I watched the special last night on tv,wow I was shocked seeing all that again.It was even worse than I thought seeing it again.

The events of that day and the weeks that followed still haunt me. United 93 went down here, we planned the memorials for the families and care for their needs when they came to see where their beloved family members were entombed.

They all went home with tiny bottles of soil from a field in Western Pennsylvania....we are went home with heavy hearts knowing that all our lives had changed forever.
