The Kitchen Table

yea i get to purchase an ott light!

So any suggestions. This would be for my livingroom, I can do either a table lamp, or a standing light (Don't know what they're called). Suggestions and recommendations? I would be using it for knitting.

Vickey...if it were me I'd want a floor lamp.

I'm not sure what an ott is..but I once had a sewing lamp that was made for the table. I didn't care for it at all.

I have a floor lamp now for reading because I need a lot of light for reading. I can reach out and move it so the light is on my book. If your lamp is sitting on a table your light source is limited to that table.

okay...lol...that's my opinion.

I have floor lamps and really like them. One is an Ott lamp but the others are not. I really like the ones that are from Big Lots better. My husband uses one every day and it still has the same bulb it came with, plus they came with an extra bulb. They are great to read or sew by. I am happy you are going to get one.

I have an Ott light in my sewing room. It is a special florescent light that was developed to give true color, and is much used by people who do sewing, quilting, embroidery, and the like. Someone told me once that it was originally developed to provide light for people with SAD, but I don't know if that is true or just one of those stories that gets going. I do not know if it would be an advantage or not. The reason you use florescent lights for starting seeds is to get light without the heat you get from incandescent bulbs. You need to get the light very close to the new seedlings, say a few inches (I forget the optimal distance but you can look it up). As the plants get larger, you gradually move either the light or the plants to maintain that distance. The reason you don't use an incandescent light is that at the close distance required, you would burn the plants. The Ott light I have is a floor lamp, and I don't see how you could use it. It would be simply too awkward for this purpose, in my opinion. There is also a desktop model which perhaps you could adapt by raising and lowering the platform your seedlings are on. Whether it would be better than a regular florescent I don't know. By using a cool and a warm florescent tube, you can get a pretty full spectrum. The light given by the Ott light is excellent for the purpose for which I use it, that is, sewing under artificial light. What I don't like about the Ott light is that they use a special ballast that no one else makes, and when the ballast goes, they refuse to sell you a replacement. This is my second Ott light, which is how I know, and it was given to me. When this one goes, I think I'll get an LED light of some kind. It would be no more expensive and use less power. I spent some time online looking at cove heaters and trestle tables. I think the window seat will be the type that you remove the cusions and open the top. With the table in front, it might be too combersome to have door or drawers that open into the table. It will be storage for less used items anyway. I have to do up the plans before DH can get to work, but that won't be that much work. At least we already moved the light in the kitchen when I was crawling around in the attic back in December to move the dining room light. I'll have to be back up there to install the cove heater though - crawling around in the attic is one of my least favorite DIY thing to do. The bulk of what is left to do are things I'll be doing, but I need DH's help with making the cabinets. He's great with woodworking, but I don't let him near a paint brush/roller - not even to prime.

Vicky, you will truly like your new Ott-Lite. I bought 2 table model lamps at one of JoAnn 1/2 price sales. I use one on my sewing table and one beside my bed for reading. Several months ago full spectrum lamps were on sale at BigLots. The table model was $25. and the floor model was $30. I bought one floor model. When I put it beside my chair for reading in the living room, I was astounded how that tiny 4-tube light gave off such pure light and no heat! I hurried back and bought another one to use in my sewing room. They really are "easy" on the eyes. You made a very good choice. I feel it was money well spent. Jube

My first Ott bulb was one used by someone else and I used it for 4-5 years before it went. Back in those days it cost 25 dollars. I bought another and it was good for about 10 or so years used regularly. Since then the prices have gone up so much that I have moved to the compact florescents -daylight in almost all my lamps and fixtures. You just cant put a clamp shade on them which leaves me with one lamp with a candescent bulb. I figure the ott people changed who was making their bulbs or the company has changed hands. This sort of thing happens with a lot of products and they are never the same.

I'm another floor lamp person. If it is on the table, it lights the table and not whatever I am looking at. More versatile for placement too.

My Ott is a floor lamp - I use it next to my sewing machine and my DH uses it to tie flies. As chemocurl said it's more versatile for placement - you don't need a table to put it on.

I just bought one at Hobby Lobby with the 40% off coupon. I use it for working on my stamp collection. I have another smaller one for when I work on my counted cross stitch. I did buy the more expensive one, around 98.00 (with coupon)might be less, because it had a heavier base. It is gold color. It fits into a tight place and just right for using the card table.

I love mine. It is a Table Top also has a magnifier, specifically for detailed work. Also, great for photographing small objects adding great light.

I have the floor lamp and use it every day for reading or crafting. I also have a table lamp on my sewing machine, but don't use it as much as the floor lamp.

I have 3 of them.I have a floor one in the living room next to my recliner and i have 2 in my sewing room.I do/did a lot of cross stitch and i'm sure those of you familiar with that know you need good lighting.I also keep one by the sewing machine,and another at my cutting table.The small ones are handy if you go on trips or vacation.Just stick it in your bag.

I have 5 in various types and places. Floor one here by the computer/sewing machine/filing cabinet it is quite versatile. Different table top ones....ALL wonderful to read by. The floor one, I got at Big Lots at a very good price, and it is probably 3-4 years old. I am sure you will love it! Nanny

I use my floor Ott more than the little one. I can move it around and twist the neck to wherever I want it.

I would get the floor lamp in a heartbeat! I have a table one with a clamp that I adore. But I have to have a table to clamp it to!
