Fall leaf report week 3 or is it 4!

We are getting a bit more red in the leaves. When we went to Iowa last week, there were a lot of reds and oranges thru Indiana and Illinois along Interstate 80, but by no means near peak. What do you have, especially those in the north east, and Janie and Bigack? We are still planning our leaf peeper trip to Maine, probably leaving mid week, this week.

I am headed to MA on Thursday. I talked to a friend of mine last night and she said it was starting to get color but is late this year. Hopefully there will be some nice color while I am there. This is Central Massachusetts that I am going to.

Can't say what the leaf color will be by mid week. , We have had so much rain for the past three days. That being said, the color just outside of Boston is minimal at best.

New Yorker here...Dutchess County to be exact. We're along the path of the beautiful and scenic Taconic Parkway (1 mile from our house), so if you get a chance to cruise it the fall foliage will be spectacular. The Taconic was built during FDR's administration by WPA workers. It was originally built as a "touring" road and other than roadway upkeep and improvements, hasn't really changed much. There are few traffic lights, a lot of winding and hills, lovely stone walls, and trees, trees, trees! The leaves are really "dulling down" before the change starts. You can see hints of gold and slight tinges of red appearing. I love the Hudson Valley in the fall and feel very fortunate to live in such a picturesque region. Some of the trees are starting to drop their leaves, the air is turning, nights are much cooler and damp. The wooly bears have a large band of orange and I've seen more than the usual amount so far this year. Yep...I think we're in for a loooong, cold winter.

Kim, this is the first year I have planted cucumbers in about 3 or 4 years, I have just had volunteers that came back each year. I bought a 1 oz pack of seeds a month or 2 back that were marked long green, or long thin, or something like that. I was wanting the ones like Jennifer was talking about, but the co-op did not have any. Anyway I planted about a dozen seeds along a 3 ft. strip, and made a trellis for them. I pinched out all but 4 or 5 of the plants after they came up. The plants I have, have only been producing for about a week, and we love them. They are not bitter, maybe because they are young plants. I still want to buy the Beit Alpha, I hope I got the name right, and try those. I may have to plant more collards, the armadillos are digging in the garden, and seem to really like the area that I have Vates collards planted in. I will have peas, sweet potatoes, and Arabat squash, along with a row of other squash coming out in October, that should allow me more room for more greens. I came back and changer the name of the cucumbers, I think the cucumbers Jennifer planted were Beit Alpha???? We wound up getting a pretty good rain, even though It came in about 5 showers, but no run-off.

We are just getting into the leaf colors here in So. Maine. Not much yet at all, but the ones that are starting to turn are gorgeous! They weathermen said it would be a great season for color. They are right this time. A lot more trees have turned way North of us. NancyLouise

The reds are coming out between here and Morgantown. Elkins is showing some of the other colors. This week is the Fall Festival in Elkins. I am hoping the leaves hold out until October 24th, my family is coming that weekend.

I'm flying to Boston on Oct 25th. One night and day there then into Hanover, New Hampshire for 3 days...then driving to Freeport, Maine for another 4 days. Mixing business with pleasure is so much fun. I'm taking a girlfriend along and I'm hoping that the leaves wait for us too. I've been to Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine at the peak and it was unbelievable!! So I'm hoping that she will be able to enjoy that very special part of the world.

Just spotted some red this week in Boston. Prediction is is difficult - if we get high winds and a lot of rain it could knock the leaves off the trees. We've had a good summer, no drought, I have heard the foliage should be good this year.

Our leaves are just starting to turn to orange and red. I cannot wait until
all the trees start foliaging (sp), it is just beautiful. DH and I are planning a trip
to West Virginia in two weeks, I am hoping their foliage waits for us to get there.

I envy all of you that get to see this! Please post pictures so we that don't have the fall colors like you can see them too! I love, love this season just to see all the trees change, I have to go about 6-10 hours north of us to see that kind of beauty....my dream is to retire in the middle of everchanging trees!
