Update on my home perm

To make a short story long, I'll mention my pursuit of the Perm.

Went to Kmart; they had the Perms, but not the rods. Went on to WalMart; same thing. Very frustrating.

MyDGD (the designated Perm-giver) lives about 30 minutes away and I know there is a Sallys near her, so I was going to have her get everything there. Before I called her I talked with my DD, who is only about 10 minutes away and she said she thought a Sallys had opened up where the new Target is and she would get it on her way out here this morning.

She told the girl at Sallys that it was for her Mother, and that I have grey (in the front and sides) short hair. She recommended, and DD bought a One'n Only perm called SHINY SILVER for grey hair. Also got rods (pink and grey) , and end papers.

DGD read all the directions and went to work on my hair. She, BTW, went to Beauty School when she was 16, and didn't even last out the year! She mentioned it had been about 20 years since she had given any one a perm.

This was not "your mother's perm" because there were end papers of a mesh type material, several bottles of things to use, or mix and best of all, did not smell like rotten eggs like the old ones! I remember years ago when my DH would come home from work and I had gotten or given a perm, as soon as he opened the door he would say something about the Rotten Egg smell.

It only took an hour and a half to do the whole thing. We didn't have enough rods, but that was okay, it just left the back straight, down towards the bottom. I've seen other people with cuts like that.

Then we ordered Pizza and DGD went on to a meeting. DD stayed a while then went home. We always have fun when we are together and I am so thankful for having these girls in my life. I reminded my DD that I gave her her first Tonette when she was 18 months old. I kept giving them to her until she was thirteen and she wanted her hair cut short....which she soon regretted! When she was getting the Tonettes her hair was always long, and everybody thought she had naturally curly hair!

Anyway, The perm turned out great! I think it looks CUTE! Sorry I don't have the kind of camera that takes and shows instant pics.

I remember when my sisters and I were young my DF said he didn't understand why they were called permanents, because we had to keep going back and getting them again!

My friend says I can't tell a short story. She is right.

I could have just said. The perm was okay.

P.S. The perm etc. from Sallys only cost $15.75.

Glad things went well. If you are satisfied, that is all that matters. Oh, yes, if I remember after any perm, and it has been awhile, watch the shampoo the first time or so. Get a shampoo for perm hair. You might check where you bought the fixings.

Sounds like your whole home perm experience went great and fun! Even nicer that you have such a good time with your family.

I remember my Mother giving me perms, gosh, as early as I can remember! When I got older I begged her to stop. Then the Big Hair era came in the '80's and I begged her to give me perms again! lol

Now my hair is as straight as a pin.

Thanks for sharing your story and bringing back some good memories for me!

@User - Not pot lights, but more of a modern style for the dining room and at the base of the stairs - those are both super traditional and its small but has a big impact when you swap them out. If you paint a griege (even lighter maybe than what you mention) it will immediately make your house feel more modern/clean lines. the white is too much of a contrast and isnt' bright like it likely once was. Your tile isn't that bad, the grey/non-tan will pop out with a difference color paint. We did a full house in similar situation a few years ago - changing the spindles/under the steps on the stairway made a MASSIVE change. I couldn't believe what a difference it made. We called around and some places were charging $$$$ to do the stairs, once guy offered to use a sprayer and it was like $500 and done in a day. I had worked on it myself for about 40 hours by that point and realized the bloggers were crazy that thought it was just simple and easy and fast. This house WILL look exactly like you want it too.

I would keep the one that you have, (unless of course, it really needs to be replaced). There is the same window design on your bow window, so they do compliment each other. If yours is in good condition, consider just painting it a pretty color to compliment the house.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I really do appreciate all the feedback. I am now leaning towards leaving it blue. We will have to take a closer look at the paint behind the cedar. The cedar has been there for at least 15 years. I am not sure what colour the paint is behind the cedar. The front of the house is south facing so I wonder if the cedar has protected the siding and if the siding is darker behind the cedar. At the very least, we will give it a very good trim (a nose job 😂) The housing market is pretty good right now where we are. I don’t live in a big city so we don’t see the big housing price fluctuations. We currently hope to put it on the market in Feb or March 2023. There will still be snow on the ground then. But if it doesn’t sell right away, I will be sure to throw in some bright annuals in the front until the day lilies start blooming. Maybe bright yellow marigolds or some bright pinks.

I absolutely LOVE my house, we had it custom built....I love wood and the huge logs, I just want to make it look a little more modern and wanted to know if the color white on the moulding would do the trick or some other suggestion......it's my dream home I got to build but it's now 17 years old and needs updating via small changes/color thx

So glad it worked out well and the best part is sharing girl time with your DGD and DD, those times are priceless.

I have very curly hair (hate it) and started doing chemical straighteners (way back when) when I was in 7th grade. The smell from that was awful too. I had long hair and would have to roll it on beer can sized rollers and sit underneath my table top hair dryer. Thank goodness hand held dryers came along and I was able to toss out the rollers and chemicals. My must have and can't live without device is my flat iron :)

I lived through many home permanent in the 1950's-1960's.

And I also remember the curly hair fashion in the late 1970's-1980's. I had several perms then, some in a salon and some done at home.

Now my old gray hair is straight, and it is so thin that I don't dare get a perm, or it might all break off.

I'm glad you like your perm though! I wish my hair was healthy enough to withstand it.

All in all it sounds like you had a fun day. Glad your perm turned out so well. I think I'll give myself my perm sometime this week. I keep an Ogelvie on hand and over the years I've accumulated rods in about 5 different sizes. As for the cost difference, a perm at the place I get my hair cut is about $40.00 plus what I would tip, and the one I bought at Wal-mart is under $6.00. I figure my labor is free cause I'm retired. LOL Dotttie

I was born with straight hair. I remember my Mom giving me a Toni perm around age 4. When I became a teen, around Woodstock Days, those "fros" were in style, I gave myself a home perm. Left it alone till I was in my twenties. Went to a beauty salon and they insisted I needed a "body wave". Thaqt was my last perm. I haven't seen one in the stores in a while. My daughter just got her hair dressers license, I'll ask her about home perms.

Sounds like your perm turned out great!! I permed my own hair about 6 wks ago I guess....was going to go get it done...but it would have been about 60 and I knew that getting the kids ready for school was more important...of course having done hair for 20 years I knew what to do but trust me doing other peoples hair is a heck of alot easier then doing your own...my arms were soo tired when I finished but I wanted to make sure i got all the ends smooth so no fishhooks so really took my time.....Thursday was the first day I straightened and was very please witht hat also....made it not go near as flat as it ususally does.....STacy
