Going to a Vietnamese noodle house, any recommendations?

friend and I are going to have lunch before seeing a friend in hospital.

Any recommendations for eating? Saigon Noodle House

What about a sandwich? etc

Since it's a noodle house I would get Pho or Bun . Pho is a noodle soup. Bun is a meal in a bowl consisting of vermicelli rice noddles and veggies topped with meat or meats of your choice. It usually comes with dressing and a side of herbs you add yourself.

Yes, get the Pho! We go out for Vietnamese soup often. Claude and I love it and all our kids do too. It's delicious! I recommend it with rare beef (served in very thin slices). You can get the pho with tripe and/or beef balls (which are kind of rubbery), but I prefer without. Claude's always more adventurous than me. With the soup you'll get a plate of bean sprouts on the side that you can add if you want, and there's always Hoisin sauce and hot chili sauce on the table that you can add if you like.

Vermicelli with barbecued chicken and a spring roll is another of my favourites. It usually has peanuts in it, too.

That is a good start Lali. Wish you good luck with water rooting. I personally have not had too much luck with that, but some people have the magic touch for it. In case that doesn't work, you could also try rooting in a little plastic pot with any ordinary potting soil. Keep soil moist, but not soggy wet. Rooting hormone would benefit, although it is not totally necessary. Place the pot in a bright and shady location (since you're in so cal too), but not in direct sunlight. Once Thai basil starts flowering, you can pinch off the flower heads. Like deadheading any other plant. The ones I have survived all winter in a big pot. When spring came, they flowered immediatly. Now they are starting to grow leaves again. Although, these older plants are not vigorous compared to young plants grown from seed. So you can also let them flower and have them reseed (you will end up with more vigorous basil plants and can have multiple generations growing side by side).

OMGosh! I make this catfish soup all the time (MIL's recipe) and didn't even know the veggie I was using all this time was taro stem (looks like this http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2199/1546721921_0f7c21d0d4_o.jpg right?). I always see it in the supermarket with a vietnamese name and never knew what it was. Thought it was some sort of super exotic veggie. MIL hasn't harvested much from her garden since it takes a lot of stems to feed a big family and it's easier to just buy it from the market. Now that I know what it is and how to use it, I'm definitely going to ask her for a clump now! Thanks for the tip! lali

As suggested try and get the menu ahead. Or call them. Must be something in the vegetarian section that is without fish sauce. With allergies and vegans and so many dietary needs i would think you could find something. And how do you know you don't like it? Having a spoonful straight from the bottle is rather strong. Worcestershire also has anchovy. Here is a screen-shop from my favorite lunch spot... I made Pho Tai and Goi Bo at home last night as a trial run for a dinner party that includes a vegetarian...i'll be making two broths, and two noodle dishes, and one dipping sauce was fine without fish sauce using BraggsAmino and a vegan/no gluten soy.

Ignoring the large element on the right for now, the house is a Garrison Colonial with stripped-down Neo-Classical columns and pediment. Unless you're comfortable with the inherent architectural contradiction and since it would be virtually impossible to get rid of the second floor overhang, one solution would be to remove the pediment and columns, add the missing trim board at the bottom of the overhang, use a more interesting paint color on the upper part and possibly paint the brick. To add some interest to the roof you could add some dormers if the roof slopes enough to allow it. Perhaps the large element on the right including its trim could be painted dark color.
