All of my clients at work who are on Social Security (mostly disability) got their paper checks on time. I wonder if it has to do with electronic deposits only. Does the letter say why the date is changed? You can also call the 800 number (off the top of my head I think it's 1800-772-1213, and ask them so you don't have to go in.

I would be furious too, especially without notice so folks could prepare.

Jennmonkey, thanks for the phone number. According to the notice I received, the reason to their "decision" was "the payment date on this claim has changed". The new date is the 3rd of the month and it effects to anyone that receives SSI, railorad payments, etc..

What I don't agree with them is if they need to make the change, why wouldn't they pay me for the month that it is owned. The change should be applied to the following month income. The whole thing sounds so crooked!

Could it your bank? Our SS went thru on the 3rd without a problem. But SS disability payments may be different. Also let your congress person know ASAP if you do not get it. Remember this is an election year for many.

Thanks Marie-ndcal. I've been receiving disability for 2 years now. All the checks have been set on auto deposit on the third Wednesday of the month, and had no problem.

All of the sudden now, they want to change the date to delay another month of payment. It probably had to do with the recent cut back that was just voted.

Man, as if it's not hard enough to be disabled and no longer able to go to work. I really hate my situation. I rather be able to go to work still and make my own money.

What's so ironic about this is the disability money I'm receiving was part of the tax I put in back when I was still able to work. SS sure makes it hard for me to receive it. This is so sickening.

The Social Security website said that checks due for payment on August 10, 17, and 24 will be made on time. So you should call and see if there is a reason they are changing the date. You can be sure that, if they are changing the date, you will get a prorated amount to cover the total amount that is due. Good luck.

My brother's SSI was deposited on the first and his regular SS deposited on the third. He's been getting this for years and those are the dates set up for him, he will soon be 81.

My husband gets SSA Disability checks on the second Wednesday of each month. He got no notice or letter and I fully expect his electronic payment in the bank on August 10.

Since no one else seems to have received a notice, I wonder if this was actually from SS. Was it by snail mail or email? Did they ask for any information or give a phone number for you to call? Does that number match the official number listed on their website or in previous communications you've received? Worth checking into.

Are you collecting SSI for a disability, or SSD? Ther is a big difference. What makes me question this, is that you said your letter referred to your "claim" date. This makes me think SSI.

If your designated payment day falls on a Saturday Sunday or US Federal Holiday, it will be delivered (if paper check) or deposited in your bank the Friday business day preceeding.

The letter does not look suspicious since it has my SS number and the amount I receive monthly correctly. It also give the correct SS website, the correct local SS address and the correct toll free # for questions.

I receive SSD, not SSI. Jannie is right, I was schedule for my check on the 3rd Wed (by my DOB) of the month which was supposed to be due on Aug. 17th.. The Aug. 17th payment was supposed to be paid for the month of July. The change is now moved to the 3rd of the month. Since the 3rd of Sep. is on Saturday, the check will be deposited on Sep. 2nd.

My last check was received on July 20th. With the new date and skipping this month payment, I am going on 6 weeks with no pay check from the SS.

I also have partial income coming from my work benefit but that's not much at all since they consider SSD as part of the total income. I believe, this was the reason why they decided to change the date. It's fine if they pay me for the month they skip which covers part of my bills. But when they skip the whole month like this, it certainly put me in jeopeordy. I've already done all the possible cut back (no cable, no extras and only living on the bare necessity) when I was forced to take disability and living on a limited and fixed income.

Looks like part of the bills that needs to be paid on this paycheck will be 2 weeks overdue. That sure doesn't look good. It's a beginning to send this home to a foreclosure. I thought the government was helping people not to go on foreclosure. In this situation, it is sure the other way around. Frankly, my monthly mortgage is much lower than renting an apartment. If I have to sell or forclose this home, I have no idea where to go.

For those that haven't received a notice, I have a feeling that you may be getting a notice sometime next week. My notice was received just yesterday, Saturday.

Oh well, I don't see how the SS office can help me in time for this billing cycle. They are slow in responding to anything. I have serious doubt that they would even care. If they can skip paying a whole month to a few people, it adds up to a big saving on their ends.

I would call them and ask. Speculation will just cause you to turn in circles and worry endlessly. I can't imagine they are trying to not pay people for a month so you may be blaming the wrong people and causing unnecessary stress upon yourself. Could there have been a change in your work benefits that prompted it? In any case, I hope you find a resolution that you can work with.

You might try asking at one of the forums linked below. In doing some searching I don't see any mention anywhere about any payment dates being changed for anyone or for anything. It's almost like you were the only one getting changed.

It's good to know that this didn't effect many. It may be an isolated instance. I can't call the SS office now, will have to wait tomorrow during business hours. Even if I call, they would probably tell me to appeal. Appeal times take awhile which means nothing will get taken care for the next 4 weeks anyway. I've dealt with the system for most of my life and know that they take their little time passing my case around and sit on it. 2-3 months would be the quickest to get things done when it comes to any money involvement with state and federal departments. And that only happens when I keep them on their feet!

Seriously, I am starting to feel that I just have to accept it. I have you to comfort me in some ways but in the end, just have to wait for that check to be deposited on Sep. 2nd.. No change from the SS office will be taken care in time.

Honestly I think you're stressing out far more than you need to be. I mean, I know it's certainly a hardship having your bills be late but you seem to be worried about losing your home and I think that is a little extreme over a two week delay unless there are circumstances I am unaware of. I would recommend perhaps calling your mortgage or utility companies and letting them know the situation. They may agree to a one-time late payment or waive any late fees especially since it's out of your control. It certainly can't hurt to ask. I'm confident you can get through this with minimal damage but try not to stress too much because, as I'm sure you know, it can have devastating effects upon mental and physical health.

Chi83, thanks for the comforting words. However, it's not just 2 weeks delay, it's 6 weeks no payment that I'm looking at. That what hurts.

The SS already delay my payment when I first came eligible. Back then, I had to make calls to all my collectors and asked for a delay in payment. They wave the penalties and understand the situation. Will they do it again this time, I'm not sure. What about the next time and the time after that? How many times will the SS office dig out excuses in delaying payments? That too worries me.

Am I over reacting, I don't think so. Unless, I know I can sew them for mental, emotion and physical devestation every time they decide to jerk us. To them, the sooner I go 6 ft under the less they have to pay me and the more saving they would have. I know I sound bitter but it's the truth to the matter. Sometimes, I feel like I am entitled to be bitter in order to accept the situation.

You're entitled to feel however you want, but I'm concerned that you are overly distressing yourself. If the companies have worked with you before, there's no reason to think they won't work with you again so I would call them tomorrow if I were you. The two week comment was because it seems two weeks later than you had already planned.

It's only one late payment so far, you don't know why it's happening or the reasoning behind it and perhaps it's just a 2 week delay until it runs smoothly again. But you're asserting that "they" want you dead for convenience sake and that's not healthy.

I'm sorry if I sound harsh and I promise that's not my intent because you've gone through things that I can't even pretend to understand but I think it's important to keep it in perspective instead of dwelling on all the possible things that could go wrong. I tend to do the same thing so usually the only thing that helps is an outside perspective telling me it will work out, and I'm sure it will. Just be pro-active about it and try to stay as positive as you can. :)

The SSA payment calendar does not indicate any change for people getting checks on the third Wednesday of the month. But people who get their benefit on the third of the month, will instead get it September 2, 2011, possibly because of the Labor Day holiday on September 5.

I think that that it's just a notice aimed at recipients who receive their checks on the 3rd. I think you might be reading it wrong. I bet you get your money on the 17th.

Well, I'll find out when I give them a call tomorrow. The notice was addressed directly to me, not to a general group. I will definetely stress out that they now owe me 2 months of SSD. When I get those 2 payments after my death, I will come back and thank each-and-every-one of them :>]

1. Your social security "check" is not a paycheck.
2. Your complaint about SSA owing you 1 month because your benefit did not arrive as soon as it was accepted could have happened for many reasons.
3. I also expect to get my benefit deposited on the 17th. I have not received any notice that it won't be there.
4. Unless the wording on the "notice" you received specifically said that "your August benefit payment will not be deposited on the 17th. The new deposit date is September 2" - I suggest that you wait until it isn't deposited before you get any more upset.

I have to agree with many of the posters to this thread. I think you have misinterpreted the letter Social Security has sent. So don't twist yourself up!

Certainly call tomorrow when the office is open. But make sure you have the actual document to read to whomever answers the phone. If you just tell them what you've said here, no one will be able to help, because you haven't given enough information.

Yesterday, my older sister called me and said that she could help me out financially if I needed to. That calmed me down with the addition of all your comments. It shows that you care and I thank you for all of your thoughtfulness.

It's been a busy Monday. A few years ago when I was able to work, I had the energy and strength but no time. Now that I no longer can work, I have time but no strength & energy. That's how it normally goes, doesn't it?

Anyway... Yes, of course I called SSA. The SSA agent knew exactly why I was calling. He said that I was not alone in freaking out, many did too. With his first call about this notice, he even had a hard time understanding the letter. He had the caller reading the notice several times in order to understand and explained it correctly. He sympathized with me and wished that the letter would have been wording more clearly.

The SSA agent explained that all notifications they send out is for the following month or future payments. Therefore, the current month payment is not effected. Phew!

Looks like, I wasn't the only one to receive and didn't understand the notification. It wouldn't have been so bad if I received the notice during the weekdays and not having to sit on it throughout the weekend. Well, it's over now. No need to dwell on it.

Thanks for letting us know. When I had read Monica's response about the letter referring to your Sep check and not the August one, I figured that was what you'd find out. So now instead of being without your money for over 2 wks, you'll be getting September (and future payments) 2 wks in advance of normal.

Monica's comments were not entirely at the right place.

The notice was literally written this way: "You will receive $$$ for August 2011 around September 2, 2011. After that you will receive $$$ on or about the third of each month."

I understood it as the August 2011 payment will be received on a new date and not on Aug. 17th. Wouldn't you understand it the same way?

What I failed to analyze was that the payment is always for the month before. I knew that but failed to think it thorougly. That means that the payment for this month is actually for July 2011; and the payment for Aug. 2011 will be received on Sep. 2nd instead of the usual schedule in the third week of the month. The SSA agent didn't explained to me that way but it hit me that's what it was after I hung up from him.

My girl friends and sisters can't understand why I don't like drama shows. LOL... wasn't that enough drama for the weekend?

No, I wouldn't understand it the way you did. I found what you posted from the letter perfectly clear. You just jumped to the wrong conclusion, probably based on what you posted in your initial post (Not only the SS already owe me 1 month of income). No, they don't.

These payments are ALWAYS for the previous month. It's just like getting paid from an employer - you work your pay period, whether it's a week, 2 weeks or a month, and THEN you get paid.

Mary, the reason I said that SS owe me 1 month of payment was because that's the explanation the SSA agent gave me at the time of my first check. I am merely repeating it. It is considered an income according to IRS. Yes, I may have misunderstood it but that's because English is not my native language. Frankly, even the SSA agent, who spoke fluent English with no accent, that I talked to this morning wasn't cleared about it at first.
