Anyone like Hummus?

Talking to a friend and she was telling me that she eats Hummus every day.I have looked at it the store and then I put back on the self as I don't know what to do with it.I don't eat chips.They have a garlic,black olive or roasted tomato.

Does anyone have an opinion of this stuff?

it's good as a sandwich spread instead of fatty mayo or miracle whip. we often use it in pita sandwiches, on flat breads as wraps or on crackers w/ a topping on that. i eat it once or twice a week, dh lot more thou and it comes in alot of different flavors or you can make your own. ~ liz

Friend of mine (well, really her DH) makes their own and they both love it. I've never tried it, but plan to.

Only thing I do differently is I dice the garlic cloves. They are going to be pureed anyway so no point to leaving the cloves whole and diced gives a bit more assurance of good heat penetration. You might find that filling the jars a little less than 3/4 full works better. More liquid, especially when they haven't been fully pre-soaked, works better for me. Less drop in the liquid level in the jars leaving beans exposed. I just drain it off after opening. Dave

This makes 2.5 cups and has 1 tsp. olive oil. I haven't tried it, it's from Moosewood Restaurant Lowfat Favorites Cookbook. Greek Lima Bean dip (I'll bet you could use canelinni or a mix including garbanzos) 3 cups cooked lima beans (two 15 oz. cans, drained and liquid reserved) 2 garlic cloves, minced or pressed 1/4 cup lemon juice 2 TBLSP fresh dill (I would probably use 2 tsp. dried) 1 TBLSP chopped fresh mint (or 1 tsp. dried, I have tons from the garden last year) 1 tsp. olive oil 1/3 cup minced red onions salt and ground black pepper to taste In a blender or food processor, puree the limas, garlic, lemon, dill and mint. If needed, add about 1/4 cup of the reserved bean liquid to aid in pureeing. Add the olive oil and process until smooth and creamy. Fold in the red onions by hand and add salt and pepper to taste. Serve at room temperature or chill for at least an hour.

Hummus is much better if you omit the cumin. I know it's a traditional ingredient, but if you leave it out, you will have a much crisper, fresher taste. You can always add it in later, if you want, but I find that is severely detracts from the flavor of the garbanzos. Here's my recipe: Ingredients 1/2 pound (1-1/3 c) dried garbanzo beans, (about 3 to 3-1/2 cups cooked) 1/4 - 1/3 cup lemon juice 3-4 large cloves of garlic (6 if small) 1/3 - 1/2 cup olive oil 3-4 tbsp toasted sesame seed oil 1/2 cup tahini (toasted, if available) 2 tsp salt 1/8 tsp cayenne 1 to 1-1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper (or to taste) 1-2 tbsp water, if needed Directions Cook beans according to package instructions. I generally boil them for two minutes in a large pan, with triple height of water. Then I turn off the heat and soak for 1 hour covered and then wash them. Garbanzos will require about 2 hours to cook, after being soaked. After cooking, I rinse them twice with cold water to remove the cooking water. Put the drained cooked beans in a large food processor with the peeled garlic cloves (coarsely chopped) and the rest of the ingredients. Process until smooth. If it is too thick, thin with water, a tablespoon at a time. I use cumin in my Texas bean dip, but not in hummus, as I find it too overwhelming. I developed this recipe by taste - not having much of an idea of what was supposed to go into hummus, but remembering what flavors in it I liked. Lars

I have been making this hummus since 1979 when I got it from "The Best of Bon Appetit" cookbook. My seven children and their spouses think it is the best they have ever tasted. I have to agree! HUMMUS 1 15 1/2-ounce can and 1 8-ounce can garbanzo beans, drained 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice 6 tablespoons olive oil 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons tahini 4 large garlic cloves, minced 1 1/2 tsp salt Minced parsley (optional) Place all ingredients except parsley in food processor with steel knife, and process until well mixed. Spread on a platter, drizzle with additional olive oil and sprinkle with chopped parsley. Serve with warm pita bread and assorted veggies.

I love that stuff! It's light and very healthy. My preference is using Pita bread dipping into hummus.

A Middle Eastern co-worker had taught me how to make them but I haven't tried it yet. There are too many restaurants in Houston that makes them fresh daily for purchase.

I love it too! We have it all the time at one of our favorite restaurants. My neice loves it too. She eats it on pita bread or pita chips.

The first time I had it was a few weeks ago, it was a garlic flavoured hummus and pretty good. My sister-in-law served it with a baguette.

I make it, but my family favorite is Taramosalata Dip, which is a Greek Caviar Dip! Spread on fresh pita triangles and away we go!

I love hummus, which is made from chickpeas.Flavor I love the best is made by Josephs garlic flavored. Now has anybody tried greek Yogurt? LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!

I love hummus. I'm often asked to bring homemade hummus to gatherings. In addition to plain, I sometimes make it with red peppers or Greek olives or green olives.

It's good in salads (just drop lumps of it here and there), and also good as a dip with raw vegetables.

I always try to buy the red pepper hummus. Love to dip red peppers, baby carrots and cuke spears into it. It's good with pita chips or even tortilla chips, but I think veggies are healthier and just as filling.

I love it too and I make it often. It is so cheap to make yourself that I almost never buy it anymore...I love the roasted garlic or roasted pepper...

That settles it ! Next time I go to that store I will buy a jar.It's a nice grocery store and in their health food section so it should be good.
Or, if anyone has a recipe they would like to share I think several of the KT,ers including me would welcome it.

Our store keeps it in the refrigerator case by the organic lettuce, Bump.

It is easy to make, garbanzos, tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, red peppers from a jar, etc.

My friend Shelly is of lebanese heritage and makes her own. One way she serves it with pita bread and red onion as a snack.

I also make my own, easy and excellent. But like Glenda, our favourite is Taramasalata. I've tried it at a few Greek restaraunts, and have made my own but we have a favourite Greek restaurant makes the absolute best! It's pale pink in colour and light and creamy in texture. Served with hot fresh pita for dipping it's incredible!

lulu, if I don't hide the Taramasalata (in the far back of refrig)from Gs, he will eat it all.
It really is so yummy! We like it with pita wedges!

I love it and have been eating it for over 30 years. I like it with warm pita bread and fresh veggies. I can make a lunch meal out of it. I like the garlic hummus at Trader Joes.

I'll second Trader Joes' garlic hummus -- it's excellent. I always eat mine with warm pita bread (my local farmer's market has people selling pita bread that is much better tasting than what you get in the grocery store).
