color your tresses lighter or darker

Do you color your hair lighter or darker? I've tried darker to hide the gray...washes me out and makes me look oh so much older...so I went "light" well, that was OK for a little while..but then I thought, this is to light for my age.."61" so I went a little dark over the light..let it fade and now "I love it"! What have your expereinces been...

In fact, I'm coloring today, then off to work hope it works out OK and I don't need to wear a bag over my head!

Lighter. They say as you age you should go lighter. Whoever 'they' are, I tend to agree.

I don't color my hair any more - quit about 9 months ago. I previously colored it red, but it was such a hassle that I let it go natural - now it is whitish blond near my face, then graduates to light red on the ends - looks good and no more messing with hair color.

Thank you Bill. The Laticrete grout color our tile contractor is wanting to use is the "Marble Beige". That color is close to the darkest color in the tile. But there's not that much of that color so I'm afraid it would really stand out. I'm leaning toward blending with the "Sauterne". Everything else is either too brown or gray. Good to know we won't have discoloration or mold issues. Any recommendation on a cleaning product for our travertine? The travertine will be in our shower, knee walls and bathroom floor. He wants to wrap the knee walls completely with the tile instead of it just being in the shower and top of the knee wall. The knee walls are 41" high on each end of the vanity. Do you think this will look good? My plan is for possibly a very light quartz countertop on the espresso vanity. It's hard for me to envision.

I was a little shocked when my countertop went in. it looked much lighter than I was expecting - and I have the same exact counter in a bathroom! it looks so different because of lighting and space. Luckily, after my initial horror, I came to love the lightness of it. I think it's almost impossible to know for sure how something will look in a particular room, countertop, paint, etc. but at least with paint it's easier to try it on and change it. It's really difficult, so you are lucky to be working with a designer!

I thought initially that your picture was in inspiration kitchen! I too like the color of your exisiting wood tones in your space but agree with pllog that you could use more functional cabinets... aka... base drawers. That said, with the exisiting island (which I love); I'd go lighter and change wall paint color and backsplash. Your stone arch is glorious.

Congratulations on your new home. I hope you are very happy with everything. Having built a couple times my advise is to wait awhile before redecorating. I suggest this because it is inevitable that you will experience some drywall seam and nail pop repairs during the first year. The builder knows this too and will provide you with a one-year follow-up to fix these. They happen as your new home settles and dries and really cannot be prevented. So, if you can, live with the builders paint while you plan your theme around the furniture, rugs and artwork. Though not as popular now, we have painted several walls with accent colors while leaving the general theme neutral. I have room photos linked from "My Page" should you wish to see. I discussed it with a couple of stylist and got the same story from all. My hair is to dark to go lighter without bleaching. I don't want to do that. I have very little gray but would like to highlight my hair to for the fun of it.

I don't color mine either. I'm 65 and don't have much gray yet, so I won't color until I have to. My hair is light brown with a little gold/red in it. I'd like some reddish highlights so I'll probably do that when I have to.

I don't color my hair, either.
I am 69 and am getting more gray....but my hairdresser said she thought it was a "pretty salt and pepper" color.....coming from her that was a big compliment.

I use a color that I think is just about my natural medium auburn color, but I had significant gray by the time I was 27, so it's been a *long* time that I've been coloring.

I have heard to go just a little bit lighter, too.

Depends on my mood. This morning I went darker..however...it naturally bleaches very quickly with all the outdoor activities in the spring and summer. It's a bit of a contrast today from yesterday...BUT...It's not to far off my natural winter color. Sometimes I go red..sometimes I go light brown..sometimes I go warm medium brown (today)..~anytime I use a "warm" color it picks up all the natural red I have.

oh boy im the wrong person to ask lol in the last 2 weeks omg lets just say it isnt purple anymore. lol and at my age i dont look good in blonde anymore

I should say, I don't do this myself. I let someone who knows how do it. It's a med. brown, with highlights in it. She does my eyebrows at the same time (no highlights, just color). I have a lot of grey and have had for 15 years, so I like to blend them in so they aren't so noticeable.

I think a shade or 2 lighter than what your natural color (before it went gray) looks best. Too dark OR too blond is aging. Highlights around the face help a lot.

Mine is still natural....I want to color it as i am getting some grays but Syd and Tan and Bri say no no no....so until it gets really bad I guess I will leave mine alone....Stacy

i use a temp color called linen...so when it fades out the gray looks like i had it frosted..can't wait to see what my hair will look like when it comes back...if i was lucky it will be like ruthie showed us with curl...
