Sue_VA and Firefox Update

Hi Sue

You are always so thoughtful, following up with me all the time!

:-)

I spent an hour at the fellow's place and he dinked around with some specs and enlarged the cache and document sizes (or something like that). He does blame my Avast anti-virus for slowing it down, because some AV's scan a frequent site once and then only if there's something new. Avast scans each site thoroughly each time, as if it were the first time.

It's a little better....yahoo is the worst still, some sites are a little quicker.

Avast is recommended even on CompHelp. I MIGHT try another anti-virus and see if it helps.

I have AVG free, and it is another one liked and often recommended at CH.

I had AVG for years, but then found out and understood that it was soon only going to be available through a paid subscription.
They were not making it free anymore I think as of Sept or Dec.

If it still is free, and will be, I'll go back to it for sure.

It's your responsibility to ensure that you update your firefox browser to the most recent version, you can always find out that information by going directly to the firefox website. It will not automatically update sometimes from an old version, you will need to manually go to the website and select the latest version update. It will retain all the settings and stuff. I use xmarks to keep all my favorites safe and updated. That way should something go wrong I won't lose anything. You can also backup your favorites manually.

third, for the legit programs you have, whether free or ones you've purchased, my advice to you is to accept updates anytime they're communicated and give it no further thought. I consider myself to be a PC user of intermediate knowledge. In in my experience, even with open source projects like Firefox, the true nature of updates is rarely fully disclosed and even it if were, you as an average user would be unable to understand the real story of what's going on and why. Trust the experts (the people who are managing the software you use) and take their advice. Accept all updates and move on.

chuggerguy: Yes, I reboot every day. acraftylady: I had previously looked at that setting. It was already checked. But at your suggestion, I unchecked it, then rechecked -- now I have graphics in IE. Firefox used to have the same setting -- but now I can't locate it or something similar.

Sherry, I was hoping Mr Fixit was really going to fix it. I've never used Avast, always AVG and now AVG8. I did a search at CH for info on Avast/AVG. Give up Scrabble for a while and scan through all the comments there!

What does this mean:yahoo is the worst still, some sites are a little quicker. I don't use yahoo for anything except my email addy here.

Sherry, I was hoping Mr Fixit was really going to fix it. I've never used Avast, always AVG and now AVG8, which I will keep until the last minute. Who knows? They may extend it. You could go back to AVG (and shut down Avast) and see if that helps.

Have you looked at Thunderbird for email. I guess I like to stay away from any MS stuff. BTW, have you made FF your default browser? If not you might want to do that.

Right now I have a problem with IE. Waiting on some help over at CH.

Sorry I'm so late getting here. I found the IE problem this AM, posted it at CH then had to go out for most of the rest of the day.

TO Sue is good at helping, so maybe between us we can get this straightened out. Right, Sue?

LOL, I have been going through the threads on CH! Based on advice
ravencajun gave someone else, I did an online malware scan to see if I had anything buggy. I also use SuperAntispyware.
Is AVG8 free? Are they not going to get rid of the Free program? Or did they change their mind?

Yahoo is my email program. It just takes a long time to open the shortcut.

I have a site that I use for work that only works with IE, so it's the little e on the quicklaunch. Everything else opens with FF.

I'll keep working on it and see what I can do, if anything.

Sherry,

AVG8 is free and it will be good until December at least. If you decide to get it watch to see if it includes LinkScanner. You don't want that or any other stuff like toolbars etc. Just don't click on it, or unclick it, however it is set up.

It has always been reliable for me. Hope they don't give it up.
