This is a fairly frequent occurance, and I'm not exactly sure what causes it, but there is no grub or other critter involved. Sometimes it does happen when the pup is crowded, but other times it seems like the leaves just get stuck together for no apparent reason, much like quilling. Quilling is usually worse when the plant is allowed to get too dry because it allows the slimy goo that forms between the leaves to harden like glue. If you catch it soon enough you can pry the leaves apart and hope that it grows out of it but if it's pretty far along it might be easier to just remove it and start over. Another thought that just occurred to me: high nitrogen fertilizer can cause distorted growth and brittle foliage, so maybe there's a connection there.

If it is from a Tillandsia, it will develop a seed capsule that will split when it is ripe. The seeds have "parachutes" attached sort of like dandelion seeds, and are distributed by the wind. If the inflorescence is drying and you don't see signs of a capsule developing, it's possible (even likely) that the plant did not set seed. If you know the specific name of the plant, that may prove to be very helpful. Paul

I'm sorry I didn't get back to this posting...I thought I had typed in for responses to come to my mailbox, and when I didn't see any responses, I assumed nobody had responded. I absolutely LOVE your pic of Lavender Chrystal and Vi's Violet. I like vivid colors usually, or unusual ones I guess. I remember liking pics of Sweet Chariot, Vineyard Song etc. I haven't really gotten to know minis, as most I've seen in person ended up quilling, which just "bugs" me. I have the grandiflora Love. I love it until it quills, which is almost instantly! If I knew of this trait, I wouldn't have planted it and would have looked for a different red rose with white reverse! How nice It is too hard for me. My sister did lovely thing in quilling and even made me a creche for Christmas as well as a little diorama with a reindeer, santa and tree when I get my Christmas things out I'll take a photo.
