OMG every parent, grandparents worst nightmare. So sorry Susan. Thankfully they had their seatbelts on, the boys just don't get that bit of importance yet, sad to say.

Thank you so much, everyone. As I said on Facebook, those who haven't experienced the connectedness of the Internet don't know what they're missing. Your messages of support and caring mean so much.

I just realized my post wasn't much of an update.

Lindie, yes, I'm Susan. My granddaughter, Lizzie, was in the accident.

Liz had surgery, and now has rods in her legs. They're getting her on her feet occasionally, which is necessary but excruciatingly painful despite pain meds. Her hospital room is filled with flowers, and usually filled with groups of her friends. One girlfriend flew in from California as soon as she heard the news.

I understand the driver is conscious and talking, but I don't know much more than that. The other girl in the car is still hospitalized but doing well.

The local paper ran a front-page piece on the boy who died. A nice kid, missed by many.

My son-in-law was in the same hospital, on the same trauma floor, just last month, after a motocross bike accident. Now here we are again. My daughter is such a good person to have around in a crisis. I'm so proud of her, and my son-in-law, too.

I have bags under the bags under my eyes. Woke up at 4:30 today, which probably has added another layer of bags. I hope to be napping before the morning is over.

I'm so sorry a boy died. Those children will never get over the guilt. When I was a teenager, a cop came to my high school and lectured us about drinking and driving and car safety. He said the safest seat in a car is the back seat, with a seat belt. I always wear a seat belt, no matter what. I was once in the front passenger seat with my DH driving. A car broadsisided us at an intersection. I was thrown forward and broke both thumbs. It could have been so much worse. I'm glad your daughter is recovering. Sorry for all of you.

Susan, I coming into this so late - I'm sending mega prayers upstairs for your grandaughter and the other passengers. Such a terrible, terrible thing to have happened. I know Lizzie will need all your strength and her family's support.

Oh, I'm so sorry to read this, Susan! How very frightening to get such a phone call and know what it means. How very awful for everyone concerned, especially the family of the boy who was killed.

I'd like to mention one thing: if your dear granddaughter is to have any surgery on her legs when they remove the (exterior?) rods, please make sure there are no fracture blisters or if there are, make sure they break on their own and are healing before surgery. My sister had them on her shattered tibia and the surgeon went ahead with the surgery anyway. What followed was months of (bone) infection and many surgeries to clear it. She is finally recovering (since Nov.,) but will have one more to take out the supporting rod and screws so that the possibility of reinfection is gone.

I'll keep all the kids and their families in my prayers. I hope you will be able to get some sleep today!

So very sad and tragic. I can't imagine what she will go through. The physical healing is bad enough, but to have her two (boy)friends; one dead and one paralyzed is just too much to take in at such a young age. When I was in HS 2 boys were killed speeding in their car. 20 years later, whenever I drive near the accident site, I think of them. No one ever thinks it will happen to them. Someone was definitely watching out for her.

Thanks, all. It was one of the first things I noticed when I moved here: all the young people involved in car accidents. Where I grew up (NYC) such events were extremely rare; there's only so fast one can go from stoplight to stoplight. But in this rural area of winding, hilly roads, speed can be a deadly factor. The accident Liz was in took place in a busy business district, though, so I guess they can happen anywhere.

Patients are moved out of hospitals quickly these days. Last night she was transferred to a rehab facility where they've lined up a a schedule of physical and occupational therapy for her. She's in a lot of pain, but has a good attitude about doing the necessary work.

I told her I guess it's time for me to stop whining about my shoulder. ;-)

It is a good sign when a patient is moved from the hospital to the rehab facility. She is on her way to recovery. Yipppyyy.

Oh my gosh, how awful!

Susan, i'm so glad your GD is on the mend and the other girl seems to be doing well. Do you have an update on the driver yet? I can only imagine how difficult this is going to be for him.

I don't have a recent update on the driver, and that's my fault for not asking when I went to visit Lizzie today. But she was exhausted after a full day of PT, etc., and we mostly chatted about little things and watched some TV together.

I do want to share something special, though. One of the EMTs volunteered to take her to Kyle's funeral tomorrow. (Kyle is the boy who died in the crash.) This means the world to her, and I'm tearful just typing this.

Susan, What a thoughtful offer from the EMT. Lizzie is a brave young woman and I guess she feels that this is something she needs to do. I've attended several funerals of high school and college friends of my children. It was difficult for me to watch all those young people trying to deal with their grief. Will someone go with her so that she isn't alone? Has the other girl been released from the hospital?
