My older sister was in a design school in Chicago when the Barbies came out what a blessing for them at that time. I used to have one of the originals.

Turned 49 today and never had a barbie doll. Grew up with 5 brothers and was really more interested in their toys. They were more fun. But I guess we're never too old to try. Maybe someday.

I had a barbie. My mother made all our clothes and then barbie got a copy. My sister got a pink velveteen prom gown, so did my Barbie! My mothers pale yellow dress with the orange flowers matched barbies dress. But.....play with her.....or know what to do with her....nope. :0)

My sister was 10 years older. She was into McCalls paper dolls. Remember those?

When Barbie came out My Da and Gramps both thought I should have one. I received 2 of the first Barbies. I hated dolls! Both Da and Gramps were determined to turn me into the frills and ruffles little girl they wanted. Every year for at least 10 years, Da bought me another one on my B-day Those dolls sat in the boxes, on a shelf in my bedroom until I married and moved. I crated the boxes and stored them in grans attic. Her house burned one night when no one was home. The attic and everything was totally destroyed. That was in early 1998. I recently saw the latest values of the dolls & what many of them sold for in a recent auction with and without boxes! I could retire very comfortably with just a few of the first years dolls sold. I would love them all very much and still wouldn't play with them then! OH well just my luck!

If it makes you happy to play with your Doll by all means PLAY! We only have so much time to enjoy the things we find pleasurable So use every opportunity to please yourself and those you love.

Oh, she's great, Liz! I agree with Spicey, since you didn't have girls, you deserve her!

I bought some Liddle Kiddles not too long ago, I just HAD to have some of them, they were my faves as a kid.

I had one Barbie. My rotten brother put her in the garage right where Dad would run her over, which he did, crushing her chest. They never replaced her, either. I had to play with her like that for the rest of the time I had her. Her clothes still fit and looked good on her so I guess they figured they'd save that $2. lol

My mother thought Barbie was unacceptable due to her buxom figure (I assume). We were allowed, rather, to have Skipper and Scooter (remember them?), the little sisters of Barbie and (I think) Midge. We also had a pink bedroom type item for Skipper that had that wonderful 1960s chemical plasticy smell when it unfolded. Incidently, did you ever see the Seinfeld episode where Jerry falls for a girl who has 1960s toys in her living room and he just can't wait to get rid of her so as to play with GI Joe and the trucks? It is a hoot!

I think that's really neat to revert back to our childhood, sometimes. Nothing wrong with that, if we have nice memories of something. I got a mechanical bank from e-bay that I was so thrilled to see. I had it as a child.

I didn't play with Barbies, or dolls, but I loved farm sets with the rubber animals, and I still have some from my original sets, back in the '50's. One day at a yard sale, I found a wicker basket, full of the same farm animals, for $2.
I was thrilled. I especially liked the cows and horses. My best friend called me today and told me that a guy came by her shop with some antiques and junk to sell and she got a bunch more old farm animals for me. I can't wait to see them, later on today.

Never played with them, never owned one till a good friend sent me one. She's still in the box.

I had 350 at one time, but sold them when I saw their value slipping. It's a good thing I did. If I still had them and sold them I would probably only make 15% of what I made then.

Liz--I don't know why but I thought you were going to say you were playing with the idea of retiring!! Oh well, Barbies are fun. That's a really nice one. Gosh, I guess they wore white gloves back in the day.

I never played with Barbies. We had Ginny dolls, but mostly we had stuffed animals. I still have many, even bought a little fox this summer.

Never played with Barbie or any dolls. But I loved my brother's cast-iron tractor set! They were all Massey-Ferguson and he kept them in pristine condition till my mom gave them to our cousin. He destroyed them. Wonder what they would have been worth today.

I played Barbies with my DD. DS Played with them too.

DD is still the casual non-fashionista she always was. A guys' girl.

DS hasn't lost any testosterone from playing with them and he can't stand shallow girly girls. In fact he and his friends call those vapid types the BBBs. (Blond Bulimic Barbies) LOL

So much for Barbie influencing my kids!

I still like to color. I have a big box of crayons and several coloring books. It's relaxing.

I'm 54. I didn't have a Barbie as a child, had to play with the nieghbors- they had several..Her sister worked in a factory that had felt scraps every week, so I made many outfits from that..Bought my first one when I was 16, still have it along with about 275 or so more..I buy them at garage sales, do their hair, dress them and put them in storage cases...have some really interesting ones...
My favorite is "Ho Bag Barbie" she has a purple streak in her hair, a gold tooth and tatoos. Dressed her in a street walker outfit, and sure got some smiles.
Now I have to split them between my granddaughters who are 3 mo. and 2 yrs.
My son did a homemade video with them a few yrs ago with Ken sitting on a bench. One comes up,sits down and puts her hand on his knee. Another comes to push her off and a brawl ensues. Another one drives the pink convertible over the pile of dolls and snatches Ken. Took 110 still pics moving them slightly each frame. It was a hoot!
