I had Toric lenses implanted, Sue. Same reason: astigmatism. My doctor recommend that we do the "mini-mono"--that is, perfect distance vision in my dominant (right) eye and a prescription for the left that allows me to see closer things clearly.

I'm very happy with them. After wearing glasses since first grade, it's wonderful to be free of them. A bonus is all the cool sunglasses I can buy at TJ Maxx. :-)

I use dollar-store reading glasses for fine print, doing rug hooking, or reading menus in low light. I can use the computer or play the piano without glasses.

alisande -- Ah, I *thought* you also had astigmatism, but had forgotten you had Toric lenses. My doctor doesn't think I'd adjust well to the two different corrections, so I guess I will just be happy to have good distance vision, without the 'fog', and will have to wear glasses to read.

I'd hoped to be able to check the sodium levels in frozen pizzas in the grocery unaided, but...them's the breaks.

I'm looking forward to a return to the glasses-free life I had before age 14. (If only more of me could 'go back'!)

Seeing others in the waiting room made me grateful that cataracts are my only eye problem. My eyes are healthy; no glaucoma or macular degeneration.

I carry reading glasses to read supermarket labels too! The correction in my left eye enables me to use the computer, etc., and see settings on the stove, that sort of thing. I can read my Kindle w/o glasses--because I enlarged the text a bit. But Scrabble on my tablet requires glasses.

The worst adjustment for me was the reading glasses. For a time, I didn't read anything! Nor did I do rug hooking. I guess I was busy adjusting to the two different lenses.

my sister and I both have very bad astigmatism along with our very high myopia, I have not had surgery yet but she has. She had been using the mini mono with her contact lenses so they went with that in her surgery and she absolutely hates it, so much so that if she had the money she would want it changed. But she is stuck with it. She said it is not at all like it was with her contacts which she was fine with.
I personally won't go that route either since I never had contacts like that either I know it would be bad for me to try to adjust too.
Some people have very good results with it, which is great.

Raven, could your sister have had monovision with her contacts, not "mini-mono?" My understanding is that they don't usually do the "mini" version with contacts.

Monovision uses one eye for distance and one for close. The "mini" version uses one eye for distance and the other for somewhat close. Glasses are still required for most reading. I used to wish I had more depth of field with my left eye, but everything's a trade-off.

I paid $900 an eye out of pocket extra for Toric lenses and am glad I did. I also had a very bad astigmatism. I've worn glasses since I was 3. Now I can drive and do most other things without them. I do have a pair of bifocal reading glasses with a slight magnification correction for distance that I use for television, close work or when I'm just too lazy to take them off.

that is possible I know it was that each eye was different in viewing, she had worn the contacts like that for years and liked it. Which is why her doctor suggested she go with something similar in her surgery. She does still have to use glasses for reading and some close work.

I was just 'seen' before my July 2 appendectomy, and for the secondary colonoscopy last November. What a scheme!
