Ottoman? Round or rectangular?

Should I keep the round glass table and upholster the side chairs? Or remove the table and upholster an ottoman with the floral fabric? The print throw cushions were my inspiration for the floral material. Once bought 2 yards, and would need more to do the chairs. I bought the furniture at auction at this house. All 3 pieces have a curve to the front. The rug doesn't need to stay. Only round one I could find at the time. It will eventually be replaces. Suggestions, ladies?

Round is a good shape for the furniture. The only criticism I have is that the furniture placement is very spread out, so utilizing either the coffee table or the side tables would be difficult. How about a larger coffee table and upholtering a smaller ottoman to fill up the space.
More pictures of the room. The custom drapes are new, based on the inspiration pillows. They are a stripe of blue, green,gold/yellow. Orange cushion covers are gifts from daughter in law from Beijing, and I think they can stay with appropriately sized inserts.

    Round or rectangular dining table

    Q

    Comments (6)
Hi lell- I do not favor round tables because when you want to expand them, you end up with a lot of dead space in the middle of the table in which it is is hard to pass things across without a lazy susan. And I am not sure I want that. Furthermore, the diameter of the table ends up getting quite large and makes it difficult for people to talk to each other across that distance. I favor rectangles, and you can get a table with leaves for when you want to add people, and you can get extra chairs too. Question though, is that area really the dining area? It seems odd that one would have to carry the food through the living room to get to the dining area. Isn't there a dining area closer to the kitchen?

Advice on Round/ Rectangular Dining Table

    Q

    Comments (2)
If you need to expand the size of your table several times each year, keep looking for one that both expands as much as you need and that suits your taste. If you entertain even if it is just family several times each year, plan ahead how the table you choose will work -- or how a second table might fit in the room. Another thought: A "heavy" table in a relatively small room has some potential to visually shrink the room. What other pieces (buffet or china cabinet) can make a difference on whether or not any table "works" well, too. If the ends of a pair of tables you choose are the same height and squared, putting two tables together could work.

    Round or rectangular kitchen table?

    Q

Round in the kitchen, rectangular in the dedicated dining room. We never try to squeeze in more chairs at the 48” round kitchen table. We just move the action to the dining room, where 10 fit comfortably around the rectangular table, and two more chairs can be added, one at each end.

Hi---very nice pieces... I think a bigger rug is much needed to pull the furniture together... Also a lamp and possibly another table for the left side of the blue accent chair... I like the glass coffee table and think it a better choice for the room. The rug I selected has blue and gold in it and would coordinate with any accent color you want to add. The orange pillows could be switched to sage or orchid or to the floral print fabric, etc. and give the room a different look. Keep the chairs solid, as you have plenty of pattern with the floor, windows, rug, pillows, etc. Those windows are just to die for... Hope this is helpful. Good Luck!

Natalie, thanks for the rug suggestion. 8ft round? Should I do the chairs in the floral fabric? The green chair shows wear on the front. Or would it be too much with both upholstered in the fabric? I love the floral. Or perhaps a custom made curved ottoman on the open side of coffee table, in the print fabric and leave the chairs.

Hi---perhaps an oval rug would be more ideal---change it up instead of all the circles, yet follow the curve of the sofa and windows. I would keep the chairs solid-perhaps a patterned toss pillow on each to unite the colors---floral fab would do it. As for the wear and tear on the green chair (which by the way is my favorite of the furniture), is it just in one spot -perhaps a pattern could be introduced such as how the purple chair is covered in two---solid and floral. I think an ottoman on the open side would look wonderful... Hey, I'm always in favor of extra seating... :) CheerS!
Natalie, I thought about a couple extra side chairs to be seen from the back, as the room opens to entry hallway (where I was standing for pics). I saw one yesterday which is a little lower than the one you found. It is a mid-centre with caning on the sides. I could use the floral on it, and throw cushions and lumbar cushions on the solid chairs. We love the windows and French doors! Thanks for you suggestions! I think I will get the rug in 8ft round. I want one room in this house finished!
The wear is on the front just below the seat cushion. That is why It has the back to entry. It is tolerable. The fabric is a satin brocade, so it would be difficult to replace that section with something else. The lumbar cushions would detract from the worn place. Thanks. Off to work!

Oh my, that chair sounds Perfect for your room---just one, not two? I think a pair better, as it might look "off" having 3 different, but it could be interesting. I do like the addition of the cushions/lumbar/pillows to the chairs. The chair you mentioned, does it have carvings/intricate details such as the purple or this one I've attached? I think the detail would be a nice added touch. :) One more thing, you said the green chair is the one with the back to the entry? I swear it looks like a muted khaki gold hue on my monitor. If it's tolerable, no rips or tears, then leave it. It's the other chair that is my favorite... [houzz=

It does not have as much carving. I might find something else. A pair of chairs might be better than an ottoman. They just need to be low profile to blend with the existing seating. I will post updates as I find them. Thanks, Natalie.

Love the windows and sofa!! I would keep the round table and upholster the chairs as you mentioned. The round table adds more visual interest - more than an upholstered ottoman.
Natalie, the chair on the left is gold, one on right is green. Same chair and same material, just different colors. With 5art deco sconces in the room, I didn't see a need for more lamps and tables. The floor lamp is antique and has the right colors for the room. I think I will make pillows with the material I have, and see if that is enough and keep the solid chairs. Thanks for ideas. I will repost after I finish.
Sounds great... I do think one table lamp should be added despite the sconces. Make sure to share pics of your transformation-the room is already gorgeous... Good Luck and Have Fun! :)

Natalie, I do have a pair of lamps that should be perfect in here. I just looked back at your lamp suggestion. The ones i have are very similar, just from Big Lots! I bought them for a furnished apartment that changed to zebra stripes. Now that the chairs were pulled in, I am not so sure about a round rug. If I got a rectangular one, it would sit on the diagonal on a tile floor with a wide border. Would this look bad? Or should I stick with my original vision of a round rug? I cannot wait to get the rug and finish this room. Thank you for your help. Next room is the dining room!

I like your traditional furniture, and the punch of colour given by the orange pillows from your daughter-in-law. They have a modern, lively impact. And I love your windows.
I would try doing without an rug, altogether. Your coffee table is fine, but calls out for a few more things on it.
The architectural elements and furniture in this room are formal and traditional, where symmetry is an important element of the calm, classical, beauty. I would rearrange your furniture because right now it is in competition with the windows. It looks like you have enough area to arrange your main sofa symmetrically, centered between the two windows, and flanked on each side by the chairs. The chairs can be at slight, welcoming angles.
I would agree with Natalie that you need table lamps, some bright enough for reading, and some for creating cosy areas.
What about a fantastic large plant in the corner? You have lots of natural light.
I would find some well-loved items to place on your coffee table. Books in pile, a sculpture, something collected from nature.

Ok. I have added some accessories to the room. I don't have a lot on hand, as we are between houses. I found a lovely peacock scarf at cracker barrel and draped it on the table for now. I can see how purple can fit in the room. I just need to find the right piece to introduce it. The tablescape is simple to showcase the elegant music box. It is cut glass with a silver top. There are 3 couples dancing to the music. The gift card was still inside when I found it in an antique store. Very delicate and needs to stand alone.

I can't seem to attach images at this time. A will send them separately.

I, too, would prefer a rectangular rug and indeed agree that 18" from the sofa is the proper distance for the coffee table. You have a beautiful room that looks very French. It's a pleasure to see the beautiful things you are putting together and Natalie is giving you excellent guidance!

Thanks ladies! I will get a rectangular rug. After the Christmas tree comes down, I will re-arrange to see if it works along the window wall. It was that way before, but I liked the way it was put in the corner by the ladies who clean for me. both of the other walls have large arches to hallways. I found a harlequin corner chair in off white, delicate carved wood, which I can see in the plum, and placed in the corner between the arched openings. Very unique, but same scale of the existing furniture.

@natalie, love that purple chair and also the lamp recommendation.

I would keep the sofa and chairs solid. It's too expensive to redo if you change your style later. Easier to change accessories, pillows, etc.

I think the coffee table needs more weighty objects d'art. No so thrilled with scarf but get what you are trying to do. Also I think the rug color is too soft. Room needs some pow, pop.

Wish someone could tell me how to add houzz links to comments. Hint hint Natalie.

The scarf, I believe, would work better if wadded up and arranged artfully on top of the table. It's too orderly as it is in the photo.

Very pretty. The wattage in the lamp is a bit high, no more than a 60 or a different lampshade might be even better. :) The scarf is beautiful-great colors, but situate it bunched up... I originally thought an oval rug best for your space, but a rectangular would be fine. Goodness found this link for lamps and for fun/whimsical accessories---be prepared to drool... http://www.greenleafgallery.com/kinzig.html

@carolyn, I was trying to show the purple in the scarf. I will try to wad it. Thanks
@natalie, would the rug you suggested be too light? I think a 6x9 is best size and would be under front legs of chairs and sofa. The wood of the corner chair I found is similar to the one you showed me. I will try to get a pic of it. Did not have iPad with me today. I removed the round rug til I get a new one.

Your windows are the glorious feature of the room and set the tone.
The scale of all the elements should take their key from the windows.
You already have a large area rug so there is no need for a small carpet. I would choose a larger oval or rectangularor wood coffee table with more weight to ground the space. 12" - 18" spacing from the furniture to the coffee table is good. I would also recommend larger scale side tables between the sofa and side chairs (up to 30-36" diameter) add another large scale table lamp on the opposite side of the sofa to stand up to the windows and the tall ceiling height. You could choose a matching set of round side tables or one wood or iron and glass table on one side of the sofa and another round skirted table on the other side at the same eight.
Regarding the flaw in the green chair. You might have an upholsterer take a piece of fabic from the under side of the cushion or seat deck to replace the flawed area. Another option is to reupholster that chair in a blue and orange print to tie into the blue and orange pillows.
The image of the corner of the room is too dark to tell what is going on there but you might add a tall folding screen or very large living tree in a large scaled container. Another option if room permits you could place a tall armoire or a cabinet with a tall mirror and a lamp or pair of lamps in that corner.
Anything small will be lost in the room. THINK LARGE SCALE.

I originally was seeing this as a sunroom with spring colors and light furniture, thus the glass coffee table. the floor is white and yellow basket weave tile with a green and brown toned border of tile. It needs a rug in front of the couch. Iplan to have live plants in here. I had a tall palm for the corner, but borrowed it for an open house. It should fill that corner better than the silk I put therefor these pics. I really don't want to add any more wood in a coffee table or screen to hide the windows and drapes. I think adding a new rug, plants , the corner chair and floral cushions will give me the finished comfort I want. Thank you all. I am pleased that my home is as beautiful to others, as it is to me.

This is a totally gorgeous room. I have room envy. Personally though I love tiles on floors. Especially older ones - are they older? Is there a way to let more of them show? Maybe replace the huge rug with a smaller plain one just in the seating area and let the tiles show more? You'd have to pare down the other colours and go with greens more.
@anthip, the only floor covering was the small round rug. I have removed it. The whole house is tile. I love the basket weave tile in this room. Only wanted a rug under the iron coffee table. The house was built in 1932, so tiles are older and many patterns. there is a lot of green and brown in the border (3x4" tiles wide) throughout this rom, living room and dining room. I plan to have live plants in this room, which will green it up. FYI, I have removed several oriental rugs from the house. They were too dark and heavy. They did not go with the floors. I only kept the green one in the dining room.
    I will update pics.

I love grass greens. Perhaps a green rug would be the pop I need. I will check it out today. Also saw an amazingly statuesque yellow lamp yesterday. I might try it instead of iron floor lamp.

Hi home owner. You have a charming home. I do like what everyone is suggesting, especially the larger rectangular rug . Loose the small round. Is it important for you to keep the small sqaure curtains on the lower portion of the windows. I would get rid of these. They add noting to the style, of the room. But rather detract.
Wood shutters , that cover this area are a better choice. Keep the rug , bolder. Golds, greens, blacks. This is a good way to ground the furniture. Colours are getting a bit light. The rug above my post is great.

Live well, and happy my friend.
I didn't realise that the basket weave pattern is tiling. I have even more room envy now. It's a difficult one as I personally wouldn't want to cover up that gorgeous floor with too big a rug and I generally love rugs. I agree with fabia about removing the small nets if that's an option.
Hi, I enjoy decorating and have done it for a living. I would loose the small rug for sure a rug to me should fill the area up to the edge or just under the seating area, a large oval or rectangular rug would be great . I would find a pattern rug or even a plush shag. Use the fabric for pillows and add another fabric in a wide stripe then you could do the seating side of the chair in the floral and the outside in a solid or stripe that has all your colors. repeat the stripe at least 3 times in the room as the same with the floral if you can. I think the room is becoming to Victorian and the room isn't adding some more modern things will bring more balance with in the room. Always buy what you really love only and get rid of everything you don't. It might take some time but you will be happier in the end. The coffee table dose look dated. I would re faux finish the base in darker tones and maybe even go with a marble top. Going larger than what you have. The table should service the seating area. Pull the seating area together for better conversation. It will also leave room behind the furniture for a palm tree or some large plant. I think you need another table or two. Again each seat should have a lighting source and a place to rest a beverage or book within reach. Function should come first before anything. Sit in each place in a room and get a feel for the needs of the person sitting there. Have fun, Kevin

As beautiful as the tile may be, it's nice to have a change for part of the room with a rug placed on top of it. We cover up beautiful French parquet flooring in Parisian apartments, so let's do it here too!

Can you show us pictures of your space?? Secondly, if you bought 2 yards of that fabric, most likely, you will not find the same fabric again, and you will more to do the chairs. Now, I am not sure, if you are aware of the cost involved in reupholstering furniture, another thing you must make sure, is that the fabric you like can actually be used for furniture. I wouldn't do an ottoman in a floral print unless I have the color scheme well figured out. It seems to me, the room in the pics has beautiful architectural detail, yet, the furniture is all misplaced.

I purchased the floral material 3 mos ago. @$65/yard, I didn't want to get enough to cover these chairs. I will use it for cushions and the corner chair I found this week. I appreciate all the ideas and suggestions. I will finish the room and post pics. I have enjoyed the exchanges on this. Merry Christmas to all of you.

@Natalie, this is the chair I found a couple days ago. It is Hollywood Regency. I can see it in my floral fabric, with throw cushions on the sofa. When I went to take a picture of it, there was this outstanding Hollywood Regency lamp! I think it would work on either side of sofa, or aside from the seating area together with the corner chair. We scavenged the store for the plant stand to put it on. I have a round marble table top just the right size to place between the stand and lamp. What do you think?
Or... What about the yellow floor lamp. No other house in town can use it! That is a light in the base, as well. well? Talk to me..
I think the chair could work and maybe the table lamp but I'm sorry, the yellow lamp doesn't do much for me...
Thanks, Ironwood Builders! I found it.
I found this material for another project and discovered that it looks great in this room. Going to have one of the channel back chairs upholstered in it. Better choice than my original floral piece. What do you think, Houzz friends? The background is a golden linen look. But it is Solarium material. It should brighten up the room. Then I can add some red to punch it up. I also added a display table filled with some of my Mother's trinket boxes, (she passed away in 2000), as a side table at the other end of the sofa. I will update pictures as it progresses. I might add this chair also.
