I'm not one for romanticizing the past, but ...

I went to the post office in a neighboring city yesterday. It's a small city, and a small, old post office. It was never meant to be anything grand.

But the front of the counter was lined with sheets of marble - book-matched at the seams. It was old, and not in the best of shape, but still so beautiful.

There are lots of things I *don't* miss about the past, and lots of reasons I wouldn't have wanted to live in an earlier time. The artisans, though! Even my own house, a modest 100-year-old Victorian, has the loveliest mouldings, even inside the closets.

I know that day is gone, but the marble made me smile.
