I wait each year hoping these monarchs come to the gardens. I remember as a child running through fields and suddenly the sky was orange with these beautiful creatures. Sadly I only get to see 1 or 2 a year now. I am looking into having a the gardens become a waystation for them. I've been planting specifically for them so hopefully next year I will do it.

Butterflies I can do! This is one of this year's monarchs. The zinnia measures 6" across. I'll definitely plant those again next year.

We hatched Monarch butterflies in preschool last year and the kids named this one Princess Aurora. When we let "her" go, she flew straight to these Mums to finish drying her wings.

Ok, might as well add another Monarch to the collection!
This one, just out of it's chrysalis, is drying it's wings before first flight.

Taigen, I am not positive, but I think that your pictures are of a Viceroy bf and not a Monarch. It is easy to confuse them. I have 3 books here on butterflies and the pictures fail to show either of them in both open wing and closed wing position.

It is rare to catch a Monarch with it's wings spread open, so I decided to search out the differences in the two. Your butterfly has the curved black line crossing the middle of the hind wing that identifies it as a Viceroy.

gazania....I remember researching this also awhile back also. The viceroy tastes bad to birds. :0)

I don't have any butterflies but a friend sent me this picture yesterday of a storm near where we live. I thought it was quite impressive.

marci_pa....that was indoors, in a butterfly Emporium in Australia. Used a point & shoot Olympus & a flash. This photo I shot a couple of times, with an all black background and with the outline of the leaf....I like the leaf....

Monarch butterflies spend the winter in Pismo Beach....here is a swarm of them in the eucalyptus trees at the preserve.

Gazania...I think you are quite right! I never even noticed that and just looked it up. I will have to keep a sharper eye for them next time and keep planting haha. Thanks for the heads up :)
